ART AND BUSINESS IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY NAPLES: THE COLLECTING, DEALING AND PATRONAGE PRACTICES OF GASPARE ROOMER by Chantelle Lepine-Cercone A thesis submitted to the Department of Art History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright ©Chantelle Lepine-Cercone, 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the cultural influence of the seventeenth-century Flemish merchant Gaspare Roomer, who lived in Naples from 1616 until 1674. Specifically, it explores his art dealing, collecting and patronage activities, which exerted a notable influence on Neapolitan society. Using bank documents, letters, artist biographies and guidebooks, Roomer’s practices as an art dealer are studied and his importance as a major figure in the artistic exchange between Northern and Sourthern Europe is elucidated. His collection is primarily reconstructed using inventories, wills and artist biographies. Through this examination, Roomer emerges as one of Naples’ most prominent collectors of landscapes, still lifes and battle scenes, in addition to being a sophisticated collector of history paintings. The merchant’s relationship to the Spanish viceregal government of Naples is also discussed, as are his contributions to charity. Giving paintings to notable individuals and large donations to religious institutions were another way in which Roomer exacted influence. This study of Roomer’s cultural importance is comprehensive, exploring both Northern and Southern European sources. The Courtyard of Honour the Courtyard
The Courtyard of Honour The Courtyard of Honour of the Quirinale Palace appears to be a large arcaded piazza, unified and harmonious in shape, but it is in fact the result of four separate phases of construction which were carried out between the end of the 1500s and next century. The oldest and most easily distinguishable section forms the backdrop to the courtyard with the tower rising above it. This part of the palace was originally an isolated villa, whose construction was begun in 1583 by Pope Gregory XIII who wished to pass the hot Roman summers on the Quirinal Hill, a fresher and airier location than the Vatican. The architect who designed this first building was Ottaviano Mascarino, from Bologna. The next pope, Sixtus V, decided to enlarge the structure with a long wing running down the piazza and a second building directly in front of the older villa; Domenico Fontana was in charge of these projects. The palace and the Courtyard were completed under Pope Paul V by the architect Flaminio Ponzio, who designed the wing on the side of the gardens, and Carlo Maderno, who rebuilt the Sixtus V structure in order that it could accommodate larger and more solemn ceremonial spaces. The clock-tower was originally a simple viewing tower crowning the 16th Century villa. At the beginning of the 17th Century it was fitted with a clock and bell, and towards the end of that century a mosaic of the Madonna and Child was carried out, based on a design by Carlo Maratta. Above the tower fly the Italian and European flags as well as the presidential standard, which is lowered when the Head of State is not in Rome. -

24. SAN LORENZO MAGGIORE San Lorenzo Maggiore is one of the oldest churches in Naples. It stands between Via Tribunali and Via San Gregorio Armeno, in the heart of the Greco-roman city. The still visible layers of history within the church’s structure provide ample testimony to the importance of the whole area over the centuries. The Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore is considered one of the most interesting examples of gothic architecture in Naples, even though the Angevin structure was built on top of a pre-existing religious building dating back to V or VI century A.D. The fact that it was founded during the paleochristian period is demonstrated by the imposing Roman columns with bases and capitals in black and white granite or cipollino marble. These were re-used as decoration on the composite columns supporting the pointed arches which mark the entrance to the side chapels in the Angevin church. Some of the capitals were taken directly from the macellum or abattoir which lay below and which corresponded to the food market in Roman times. Remains of this can still be seen, including the walls and the tholos which have been incorporated into the foundations. Legend has it that it was in San Lorenzo that Giovanni Boccaccio used to meet his muse Fiammetta, the beautiful Maria d’Aquino, daughter of the King, Robert of Anjou, after seeing her at mass on Holy Saturday in 1334. Boccaccio described San Lorenzo as a graceful and beautiful temple. It should also be remembered that Francesco Petrarch stayed in the convent for a few days and, on the night of 4 November 1343, when he was terrified by a hermit who predicted a huge storm, he came down from his cell to join the monks in prayer. -

This special issue revisits baroque Naples in light of its growing fashionability.
