In his tenure, DG has led the Bruins to a Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship, two Region 18 Championships and two National Junior College Ath- letic Association (NJCAA) Top 20 finishes.

Nelson has coached the Bruins to the best record in school history and best ever winning percentage . With Nelson as head coach, 124 of his players have moved on to compete and study at four-year institutions, with 27 Bruins joining the ranks--one even moving on to a World Se- ries team .

Last season, Baseball ended their season 29-27 overall and 18-19 in conference making a big late sea- son push . Bruins fought their way through the Region The Nelson File 18 Tournament ending as the No . 3 team in the SWAC . Mitch Berryhill was name the Defensive Player of the SWAC Conf/Reg District Year while earned First-Team All-Region honors . He also served as a hitting coach for the St . 2016 29-27 18-19 3rd/3rd George Pioneerzz in 2002, and worked as a graduate ______assistant at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1998 Totals 459-272 296-188 and 1999 .

6 Assistant Coach Derek Waddoups Coach Waddoups enters his tenth season as assistant baseball coach for SLCC Bruin Baseball . His duties include recruiting coordinator and hitting coach, along with coaching the catching and supervising the strength and conditioning and position player speed development programs .

Last season, Baseball ended their season 29-27 overall and 18-19 in confer- ence making a big late season push . Bruins fought their way through the Region 18 Tournament ending as the No . 3 team in the SWAC . Mitch Berryhill was name the De- fensive Player of the Year while earned First-Team All-Region honors . Austin Ovard was named to the First-Team All- Region list . Five players were named Second-Team All-Region and five where honorable mentions.

Coach Waddoups also helped SLCC Baseball Head Coach DG Nelson move 5 players from last year’s team to either the profession ranks or to a four year institution. Since Derek’s arrival, the Bruins have moved 84 players on to four-year schools or to join the professional baseball ranks . Overall, the program has had 29 players drafted in the Major League Baseball amateur draft or sign with professional baseball teams since 1997 .

Waddoups is also the lead instructor for the renowned ‘Know Greater Heroes’ (KGH) Leadership program involving SLCC student-athletes. Along with Coach Paul Marble from men’s basketball, Waddoups teaches a leadership course to the student- athletes prior to traveling through the community to perform elementary school assemblies . KGH is an educational and moti- vational program that takes Bruin athletes, coaches and the Bruin Bear mascot to local elementary schools promoting healthy lifestyles, a drug-free life and leadership from within .

During the summers Waddoups coaches with the Marshall Gates Foundation . He was the Utah Bucks Head Coach in 2013 and serves as the Foundation Hitting Coordinator . He has also served as the Utah Marshalls hitting coach and works with the catchers throughout the organization .

Prior to joining the Bruin staff, Waddoups spent the 2007 season at the University of Texas-Brownsville as the pitching coach, and he spent the 2005-06 seasons at Bellevue University as the hitting and catching coach where they were participants in the 2006 NAIA World Series . Derek spent the summer of 2006 with the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods Collegiate League as the pitching coach .

As a player, Waddoups led Bellevue University to the NAIA World Series twice, finishing third in 2003 and sixth in 2004. He was a two-year team captain and All-Region catcher in 2003 and 2004 and was an Academic All-American in 2004 and received the National “Champion of Character’ award. Before his time at Bellevue, Derek played at the College of Eastern Utah in the SWAC where he was an All-Region 18 player and team captain .

A graduate of Roy High School, Waddoups lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was named Athlete-of-the-Year as a senior . He served a mission for the LDS church in Mexico Torreon .

Waddoups received his master’s degree in Leadership from Bellevue University in 2006. Derek is happily married to Carly Waddoups, and the couple has three young children, daughter Paisley and sons Paxon and Porter . Assistant Coach Jeremy Burg Coach Jeremy Berg joined the Salt Lake Community College baseball staff as head coach DG Nelson’s assistant Pitching Coach in the spring of 2015. Jeremy brings a wealth of knowledge to the pitching staff and will work directly with pitchers on mechanics, conditioning, and game preparation. He will oversee the conditioning and arm care programs for the pitching staff. Prior to coaching, Berg played 6 years of professional baseball in the Los Angeles Angels and St . Louis Cardinals organizations from 2009-2014 as a relief pitcher . This included 4 years with the Salt Lake Bees and being part of the 2009 Orem Owlz Pioneer League Champions . He ended his career at 22-6 with a 3 .48 ERA and 372 strike-outs over 388 innings pitched . During the 2010 season he earned awards for Texas league pitcher of the week and Mid-Season All-star . As a Certified Personal Trainer with NCCPT, Berg’s philosophy is effective movement patterns, this carries into both pitching and training. He loves to teach athletes to move more efficiently with less pain and perform at levels they have not reached in the past. He continues to work as a personal trainer for athletes in the Salt Lake Valley. Originally from Ventura, CA, Jeremy graduated from High Point University in North Carolina in 2010 with a degree in Train- ing and Fitness and completed internships with High Point Strength and Conditioning and the Conditioning Specialists in Santa Barbara, CA. In his spare time he enjoys golfing, camping, hiking, and four-wheeling. Berg has lived in Salt Lake since his first season with the Bees in 2011 . The “LAC” was dedicated in January 1996 by President Dr . Frank Budd . This building was built not only to give the Bruins a new home, but also to give the students at SLCC a state-of-the-art activity facility . The LAC houses the Health and Lifetime Ac- tivities Department and the Athletic Department. Personal Training and Health and Lifetime Activities programs are all a part of the LAC daily educational mission. Special features of the LAC include a 5,000 seat spe- cial events arena, multiple class and meeting rooms, large multi-purpose playing area, six glass wall racquetball courts, dance studio, full service free weight room and cardiovascular fitness center.

Dr . Deneece G . Huftalin now serves as the President of Salt Lake Community College and feels privileged to have served the students of Salt Lake Community College for more than two decades in various roles . Dr . Huftalin joined SLCC in 1992 as the Director of Academic and Career Advising and in 1994 was named Dean of Students . In addition to working with students, she has worked in collaboration with faculty to strengthen learning communities, the first year experience, learning out- comes and inclusivity initiatives on campus. Dr. Huftalin was named Vice President of Student Services in 2004 and served in that capacity until 2014 . In addition to her professional role, Dr . Huftalin is a faculty member for Leadershape, Inc. an international non-profit focused on student leadership development and teaches in the Education, Leadership and Policy program at the University of Utah . Dr . Huftalin serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the leading Student Affairs association. She currently serves as a board member for the Utah YWCA and previously served on the Utah Arts Festival Board . Dr. Huftalin earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, a master’s degree in Education from the University of California, Los Angeles and a doctorate in Education, Leadership and Policy from the University of Utah . Vice President of Student Affairs Chuck Lepper PhD Dr . Charles Lepper joined Salt Lake Community College on July 1, 2015 and serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs. Dr. Lepper is responsible for providing college-wide strategic leadership for the Divi- sion of Student Affairs which includes: Academic and Career Advising, Auxiliary Services, Athletics, Career and Student Employment Services, Center for Health & Counseling, Child Care and Family Services, Disabil- ity Resource Center, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, First Year Experi- ence, Financial Aid, International Student Services, North & South Re- gions Student Services, Office of the Registrar and Academic Records, School Relations, Student Conduct and Support Services, Student Life and Leadership, Student Planning and Support Systems, Testing Servic- es, Thayne Center for Service and Learning, TRiO Programs, and Veterans Services. Prior to his appointment at SLCC, Dr. Lepper served as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Tidewater Community College and previously served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Development Services at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana . Dr . Lepper received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resources and Personnel Management from Ball State University and his Masters of Education from Grand Valley State University. In 2010, Dr. Lepper completed his Doctorate of Philosophy from Indiana State University in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Foundations . Dr . Lepper is active with National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and serves as a faculty mem- ber for the NACADA Summer Institute . Dr . Lepper frequently serves as a consultant to other higher education institutions assisting them with the development of academic advising strategies that improve student success . 42 SLCC Athletic Staff Kevin Dustin enters his third year as the Athletic Director (AD) of SLCC Athlet- ics where he replaces longtime AD Norma Carr . Officially beginning his duties as of July, 1 2014, Dustin steps into the position at a perfect time as all five SLCC athletic programs are coming off highly success- ful seasons both on and off the field. Prior to coming to SLCC, Dustin served as the Assistant Director with the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). Holding that position for five years, he oversaw baseball, basketball, football, golf, and theatre . He also served on Utah State University’s staff for over 10 years, two years as an assistant men’s basket- ball coach, seven years as Associate Athletics Director of External Operations, and four years as Associate Athletics Director of Development . Dustin began his career as an English teacher and men’s basketball coach at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. Leading the Bobcats to the state championship in 1994, he was named the Utah 4A Coach of the Year . A native of Logan, Utah, Dustin graduated from Utah State University with his bachelor’s degree in physi- cal education in 1983 and his master’s degree in education in 2000. Married to wife Danene, they are the proud parents of five grown children.
