  • San Diego Padres: 3 Players to Watch During Spring Training
San Diego Padres: 3 Players to Watch During Spring Training Author : Spring Training is upon us. Pitchers and catchers have reported, position players are filing in, and everyone is eager to hit the grind and get ready for Opening Day. After finishing dead last in the National League West last season, the San Diego Padres aren't expected to do much once again in 2017. That's not to say they don't have some exciting players to watch heading into the regular season. Here are three guys that stand out to me, and should have a lot of eyes on them as April approaches. 1. Manuel Margot: Last year, he started the Futures game for the World team at PetCo Park. This year, he might be taking the same field, except as a member of the San Diego Padres. Their home opener isn't until April 7th against the San Francisco Giants, but Margot will have his eyes on making the 25-man roster well before then. The 22-year-old excelled in Triple-A last season, slashing .304/.351/.426 and stealing 30 bags in 124 games. His performance earned him a September call-up, and he went on to play ten games with the Padres. He hit 1 / 2 .243 with a pair of steals in his first cup of coffee and showed off his game-changing speed in the outfield. With the Padres limited outfield depth, Margot has a good chance of winning a starting job this Spring and is hands down one of the top players to watch on the Padres.

Sunday, he closed out the World Series for the Red Sox, winning his first championship. The Red Sox called on Sale to pitch the 9th inning of Game 5 of the Fall Classic on Sunday, and the lean left-hander did not disappoint. Sale struck out Justin Turner, Kike Hernández and Manny Machado in-order, clinching the Red Sox fourth championship in 15 seasons. While White Sox fans surely wish Sale helped bring another championship to the South Side, congratulations are in order for the former White Sox ace. And, who knows? A few years down the line, maybe Michael Kopech, who the White Sox acquired from Boston in the Sale trade, will be on the mound in a World Series' clincher for the White Sox.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • Improving the FIP Model
Project Number: MQP-SDO-204 Improving the FIP Model A Major Qualifying Project Report Submitted to The Faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science by Joseph Flanagan April 2014 Approved: Professor Sarah Olson Abstract The goal of this project is to improve the Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) model for evaluating Major League Baseball starting pitchers. FIP attempts to separate a pitcher's controllable performance from random variation and the performance of his defense. Data from the 2002-2013 seasons will be analyzed and the results will be incorporated into a new metric. The new proposed model will be called jFIP. jFIP adds popups and hit by pitch to the fielding independent stats and also includes adjustments for a pitcher's defense and his efficiency in completing innings. Initial results suggest that the new metric is better than FIP at predicting pitcher ERA. Executive Summary Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is a metric created to measure pitcher performance. FIP can trace its roots back to research done by Voros McCracken in pursuit of winning his fantasy baseball league. McCracken discovered that there was little difference in the abilities of pitchers to prevent balls in play from becoming hits. Since individual pitchers can have greatly varying levels of effectiveness, this led him to wonder what pitchers did have control over. He found three that stood apart from the rest: strikeouts, walks, and home runs. Because these events involve only the batter and the pitcher, they are referred to as “fielding independent." FIP takes only strikeouts, walks, home runs, and innings pitched as inputs and it is scaled to earned run average (ERA) to allow for easier and more useful comparisons, as ERA has traditionally been one of the most important statistics for evaluating pitchers.
