A’s News Clips, Monday, December 13, 2010 Oakland A's: Deal with Matsui appears to be close By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Multiple sources have indicated to Bay Area News Group that the A's and free-agent slugger Hideki Matsui are very close to finalizing a contract. An announcement could come as soon as Tuesday. Terms are not known, but it's believed the A's have been considering Matsui on a one-year deal. Team officials don't comment on free agents until deals are finalized, but A's general manager Billy Beane met with Matsui's agent, Arn Tellem, during last week's winter meetings, and those talks were fruitful. The A's are in search of a designated hitter to replace Jack Cust, who was non-tendered and signed with the Seattle Mariners last week. The left-handed hitting Matsui, 36, moved to the top of the A's DH wish list after Lance Berkman signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. Matsui hit .274 with 21 homers and 84 RBIs last season with the Los Angeles Angels. He spent his first seven major league seasons with the New York Yankees. The A's main priority this offseason is finding an impact hitter or two to inject some life into an offense that ranked near the bottom of the American League in every major category in 2010. To this point, Oakland has come up empty on players it has targeted this winter. The A's reportedly offered a five-year, $64 million contract to third baseman Adrian Beltre but withdrew the offer after it was clear Beltre was looking elsewhere.

The only thing Mesoraco is lacking, really, is time. Mesoraco isn't expected to be on the Opening Day roster after camp breaks because he hasn't built up enough of a catching workload yet. "I'd just say it's unlikely," Reds manager Bryan Price said on Sunday. "We can't rehabilitate him [in the Majors]. We tried to have scheduled off-days for him last year. For me, we're better served with him being 100 percent and saying if he needs to catch three days in a row, he catches three days in a row. If we say we want him to go every other day, you can't do that. "Let's say every other day he catches one day and [Tucker] Barnhart takes a foul tip off his thumb and needs a couple of days. Devin's got to be the guy that plays. It's unfair to him for us to activate him before he's ready to handle the workload." Mesoraco, 28, has been limited to 39 games over the last two seasons -- including 18 behind the plate.

SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS February 21, 2011 Last updated February 20, 2011 12:35 p.m. PT Vargas, Fister expected to be part of M's rotation By TIM BOOTH AP SPORTS WRITER PEORIA, Ariz. -- For a couple of guys who've never enjoyed much job security, the start of the 2011 season is a bit different for both Jason Vargas and Doug Fister. Instead of a year ago when they were a couple of back-end pitchers expected to be part-time fill-ins of the Seattle Mariners pitching staff, Vargas and Fister enter this season almost assured of being in the Mariners rotation. "You still have to go out and throw well, but it's nice when you've got people that are counting on you to do what you've done in the past," Vargas said. Neither Vargas or Fister were statistically superior in 2010, but then again, neither were the Mariners sans AL Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez. Yet each proved a viable and valuable member of Seattle's rotation, appearing to cement their spots moving forward. Vargas set career highs in nearly every statistically category. The most important were his number of starts and innings pitched, finally proving he was fully recovered from surgery to remove a bone spur his pitching elbow in October 2007, followed by surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in 2008 that all but ended his two- year career with the New York Mets. Vargas finished last season making 31 starts and throwing 192 2-3 innings, 101 more than he'd ever thrown in a major league season.

SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS CLIPS July 5, 2011 Who doesn't like sunny days? M's third baseman Kennedy LARRY LARUE; Staff writer Published: 07/05/1112:05 am The Tacoma News Tribune OAKLAND - When the pop fly went up, third baseman Adam Kennedy moved 10 feet into foul territory and froze like a statue – his glove up, waiting – until the ball plunked down behind him. “I saw it at its height, maybe for an instant on the way down,” the Seattle Mariners infielder said. “When it went into the sun and didn’t come out, there’s really nothing you can do.” As he stood there, did it occur to Kennedy the ball might hit him in the head? “You know it’s a possibility,” he said. An inning later, Oakland’s Jemile Weeks popped one up into foul territory near the stands, and Kennedy took off after it. Sort of. “I saw it off the bat, then it was gone, and I ran toward where I thought it would come down,” he said. It landed near his feet and bounced into the stands. “The fans seemed to enjoy it,” Kennedy said. He couldn’t recall ever completely losing an infield pop fly, and in two innings Monday lost two. “I told (shortstop) Brendan Ryan to get to anything he could, because he had a better angle with the sun, and he caught a couple,” manager Eric Wedge said. “I’ve managed enough games here to know, at a certain time of day, in a certain time of the year, balls just disappear over there.” WORK DAY Wedge called center fielder Franklin Gutierrez into his office for a morning chat , trying to help him take a little stress out of his life.
