These guys don’t get too up or too down and they know how to compete—I like what I’ve seen so far through the early part of this season ”.

Looking Local “Utah has always had a lot of great baseball talent . The student-athletes we bring in from our state are very talented and more importantly they’re great young men .”

Around the SWAC “The Scenic West Athletic Conference is always one of the toughest baseball leagues from top to bottom in the entire nation . It’s on us as a team though our discipline and work ethic to accomplish what we want to this year .”

Lead the Way “We as a coaching staff don’t expect anyone in particular to be a leader . We have the same expectations for all the young men on this team . Leaders lead by example and each young man is expected to know his own specific assignment and be able to execute it at all times.”

Hard Work Pays Off “I wouldn’t say that there have been any surprises—we have high expectations for all who enter this program . This group has learned that the harder they work and the more disciplined they are both on and off the field, the better and more positive the results become.”

Great Expectations “I always have high expectations of our baseball team . We, collectively as a team, will be able to accomplish anything we set out to do so long as we continue to work hard, are disciplined in all we do, stay humble and stick together as a group through the inevitable ups and downs that a long college baseball season can present .”

The Last Word “These young men are truly great people—they represent SLCC and our athletic department very well . We grind it out daily with the focus of getting better with every pitch, at-bat and out and we’re driven to improve with every situation and every day .”

3 Head Coach DG Nelson Coach DG Nelson enters his 11th year at the helm of the highly respected SLCC Baseball program . In his time at SLCC, DG has led the Bruins to a Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship, two Region 18 Championships and a pair of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Top 20 finishes, all while competing in one of the toughest junior college baseball conferences in the nation . As head coach of the Bruins, Nelson has led SLCC to both its best record in school history and best ever win- ning percentage . DG has moved at least 85 of his play- ers on to compete and study at four-year institutions, with 16 former Bruins having joined the ranks—one even moving on to a World Series team . Last season, the Bruins turned in an overall record of 35-19 and SLCC finished at 23-13 in the hotly-contested The Nelson File SWAC schedule . Coach Nelson has worked diligently to develop SLCC Baseball into one of the premier junior SWAC Conf/Reg District college programs in the NJCAA . Year Record Record Finish Finish In the 2012 season, Nelson led the Bruins to an over- 2004 31-26 20-20 4th/4th all record of 45-10, finishing with a remarkable 31-6 2005 37-19 26-14 3rd/4th record in the SWAC . Coach Nelson earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociol- ogy and English at BYU . He and his wife Jodi are proud parents of four daughters .

4 Assistant Coach Derek Waddoups Coach Derek Waddoups enters his seventh season as an as- sistant coach on the SLCC Baseball staff . Last year, he helped lead the Bruins to a 35-19 overall record and 23-13 finish in the tough Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) . In 2012, Coach Waddoups and the Bruins finished with an outstanding record of 45-10 and an excellent mark of 31-6 in the SWAC . He helped guide the Bruins to an outright SWAC Cham- pionship and a Region 18 title as well. The Bruins finished as District I runners-up in 2012 and hosted both the Region 18 and District I Championship tournaments . The Bruins posted an overall mark of 49-16 in 2011 and claimed the Region 18 title, finishing as District I runners-up. Salt Lake turned in a SWAC record of 28-12 that season . Derek has helped SLCC Baseball Head Coach DG Nelson to move a total of 54 players on to compete and study at four-year institutions including several who have joined the professional baseball ranks . He and SLCC Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach Paul Marble are the instructors for the highly re- nowned Know Greater Heroes (KGH) program involving SLCC student-athletes . KGH is an educational and motivational program that takes Bruin student-athletes, cheerleaders and Brutus the Bruin Bear mas- cot to local elementary schools promoting healthy lifestyles, a drug-free life and leadership from within . A graduate of Roy High School, Waddoups lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was named Athlete of the Year as a senior . He served an LDS mission in Mexico Torreon . Waddoups earned his Master’s Degree in Leadership from Bellevue University in 2006 . Derek is hap- pily married to Carly Waddoups and the couple has two beautiful young children, daughter Paisley and son Paxon .

Assistant Coach Tuckett Slade Coach Tuckett Slade enters his second season on the SLCC Baseball staff . He helped lead the Bruins to a 35-19 overall record last season, with the Bruins finishing at 23-13 in the tough Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) . Tuckett and the Bruin coaching staff moved nine players from last year’s team on to compete and study at four-year institutions . He and his fellow SLCC coaches had three players from last year’s roster earn First Team All-Region 18 honors with five Second Team All-Region 18 players and five players receiving All-Region 18 Honorable Mention nods. Coach Slade’s primary focus with the Bruins is to assist in position player development with a keen eye on the team’s base running, hitting and fielding. Prior to joining the SLCC staff, Coach Slade was the head coach at his alma-mater West High School for two seasons . He also coached with the Marshall Gates Foundation Elite Summer Program as the pitching coach for the Utah Bucks in 2012 and as an assistant coach with the College M’s in 2010-2011 . Tuckett previously spent two years as the head baseball instructor at the Frozen Ropes Baseball Academy in Utah . Slade graduated from West High School in 2004 where he was selected as an All-Region three times and earned All-State honors twice . He went on to play collegiate baseball SWAC school Colorado Northwestern Community College and Bellevue University . At Bellevue, he was a Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) Champion in 2008 and 2009 and participated in the 2008 NAIA World Series .
