Andersen's English Workpack
ANDERSEN’S ENGLISH WORKPACK Produced by Out of Joint 2010 page 1 Introduction Aim of Workpack The resource materials in this pack are intended to enhance students’ enjoyment and understanding of Andersen’s English. The activities are variations of the rehearsal techniques used by Max Stafford-Clark during the production, and present creative and practical strategies for learning in a classroom setting. The workpack also works alongside the workshop that Out of Joint provides for Andersen’s English, led by the Artistic Director, the Associate Director or the Education Manager. The resources are primarily aimed at students aged 16+ who are studying Drama at BTEC or A Level. The workpack is in two main sections – Researching the Play and the Rehearsal Process. Rehearsing the Play Andersen’s English explores the story behind a real meeting between Charles Dickens and Hans Christian Andersen, when the latter outstayed his welcome at Gads Hill Place in 1857. Artistic Director Max Stafford-Clark always encourages vigorous research before and during the rehearsal process, and with 9 out of the 10 characters in the play being real people, there was extensive reading on this period of history and the people themselves. This section includes an introduction into the play’s setting, as well as Dickens himself and the controversy of his personal life in his later years. Rehearsing the Play The Associate Director Jessica Swale gives is an insight into the rehearsal process with extracts from her diary over the five weeks before opening in Bury St Edmunds. Student Activities The workpack includes an introduction into Max Stafford-Clark’s rehearsal techniques such as actioning and status, as well as classroom exercises relating to the production. -

MAKING IT IN AMERICA: HOW CHARLES DICKENS AND HIS CUNNING MANAGER GEORGE DOLBY MADE MILLIONS FROM A PERFORMANCE TOUR OF THE UNITED STATES, 1867-1868 by JILLIAN MARTIN Under the Direction of Leonard Teel, PhD ABSTRACT Charles Dickens embarked on a profitable journey to the United States in 1867, when he was the most famous writer in the world. He gave seventy-six public readings, in eighteen cities. Dickens and his manager, George Dolby, devised the tour to cash in on his popularity, and Dickens earned the equivalent of more than three million dollars. They created a persona of Dickens beyond the literary luminary he already was, with the help of the impresario, P.T. Barnum. Dickens became the first British celebrity to profit from paid readings in the United States. -

Dickens by Numbers: the Christmas Numbers of Household Words and All the Year Round Aine Helen McNicholas PhD University of York English May 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the short fiction that makes up the annual Christmas Numbers of Dickens’s journals, Household Words and All the Year Round. Through close reading and with reference to Dickens’s letters, contemporary reviews, and the work of his contributors, this thesis contends that the Christmas Numbers are one of the most remarkable and overlooked bodies of work of the second half of the nineteenth century. Dickens’s short fictions rarely receive sustained or close attention, despite the continuing commitment by critics to bring the whole range of Dickens’s career into focus, from his sketches and journalism, to his late public readings. Through readings of selected texts, this thesis will show that Dickens’s Christmas Number stories are particularly powerful and experimental examples of some of the deepest and most recurrent concerns of his work. They include, for example, three of his four uses of a child narrator and one of his few female narrators, and are concerned with childhood, memory, and the socially marginal figures and distinctive voices that are so characteristic of his longer work. But, crucially, they also go further than his longer work to thematise the very questions raised by their production, including anonymity, authorship, collaboration, and annual return. This thesis takes Dickens’s works as its primary focus, but it will also draw throughout on the work of his contributors, which appeared alongside Dickens’s stories in these Christmas issues. -

Message from John ne of the many benefits that came to us as students at the University of Oklahoma and Mary Nichols during the 1930s was a lasting appreciation for the library. It was a wonderful place, not as large then as now, but the library was still the most impressive building on campus. Its rich wood paneling, cathedral-like reading room, its stillness, and what seemed like acres of books left an impression on even the most impervious undergraduates. Little did we suspect that one day we would come to appreciate this great OOklahoma resource even more. Even as students we sensed that the University Library was a focal point on campus. We quickly learned that the study and research that went on inside was important and critical to the success of both faculty and students. After graduation, reading and enjoyment of books, especially great literature, continued to be important to us and became one of our lifelong pastimes. We have benefited greatly from our past association with the University of Oklahoma Libraries and it is now our sincere hope that we might share our enjoyment of books with others. John was a pay clerk in the Royal Navy and the family moved with his job, coming to Chatham when Charles was 5 years old. Dickens was so inspired by what he found in Kent that he returned here for the last years of his life. Many people and places in his novels have Kentish roots. The marshland around this area lent itself to the vivid opening of Great Expectations. Dickens was a dedicated walker. 12 miles was an average daily walk. He would walk in all weathers, turning ideas over in his mind. CHAPTER 10 Fictional Dickenses Emily Bell, Loughborough University Much as Charles Dickens’s own characters have appeared in various forms since their textual debuts – as discussed with relation to Miss Havisham in Chapter 4, Rosa Bud in Chapter 5, Little Nell in Chapter 7, and the full cast of Great Expectations in Chapter 9 – Dickens himself has been fictionalised in diverse ways throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Some of these appear- ances are vastly popular among audiences who might not be particularly well versed in the author’s works, and do not aim for biographical specificity (for example, Gonzo’s turn as the Dickens-narrator in The Muppet Christmas Carol [1992], or Simon Callow as Dickens in an episode of Doctor Who, ‘The Unquiet Dead’ [2005]). Others have trod the line between biography and fiction une- venly, being read (and reviewed) as pure biography rather than biofiction, caus- ing dedicated Dickensians some headaches but being popularly received as fact. The line between biofiction and biography has long been blurred: as Michael Lackey notes, one of the foundational definitions of biofiction drawn from Carl Bode’s 1955 essay suggests that, ‘if a biography is either bad or stylized, then it would qualify as a biographical novel’ (Lackey 4); Georg Lukács had said some- thing similar in his 1937 study The Historical Novel, suggesting that the sub- ject’s ‘character is inevitably exaggerated, made to stand on tiptoe, his historical calling unduly emphasized … the personal, the purely psychological and bio- graphical acquire a disproportionate breadth, a false preponderance’ (314–21). That the biographical novel might be too biographical is a striking claim. -

Charles Dickens ______________________________________ Professor Joel Brattin, Co-Advisor Abstract Our project, completed at the Charles Dickens Museum, involved the creation of a computerized educational tool and a set of interactive activities that serve to educate children aged seven to nine on the life and works of Charles Dickens. To create effective learning tools, we conducted research and performed interviews with teachers, children, and museum staff. From these methods we developed an educational tool and activities to assist the museum in creating a child-friendly environment that fosters learning. i Authorship Page All group members contributed equally to the writing and editing of this report, as well as to the completion of the computerized educational tool and additional child- friendly activities. ii Acknowledgements We would like to acknowledge certain individuals that helped us with our project.
