The partnership that the National Collegiate Honors Council entered into with the National Park Service almost a decade ago, when the Partners in the Parks program was created, has immeasurably enriched the lives of undergraduate honors students and faculty from throughout the United States and abroad. This second edition of NCHC’sPartners in the Parks: Field Guide to an Experiential Program in the National Parks has recorded with delight the pedagogy, relationships, anecdotes, photographs, journal entries, essays, poetic expressions, and intellectual and ethical devel- opment that have emerged from this educational partnership and the PITP experience. We hope that this book reflects NCHC’s appreciation for all that a host of NPS rangers and other staff members have done to wel- come honors students and faculty into this nation’s national parks and to assist with and enrich these Partners in the Parks adventures. All have generously con- tributed their ideas and experience so that others may find in this model encouragement to participate in existing Partners in the Parks programs and to propose new adventures. They, however, only observed the Sierra Nevada mountains. None entered the high terrain where the giant Sequoia exist. Only one explorer came close to the Sierra Nevadas. In 1806 Ensign Gabriel Moraga, venturing into the foothills, crossed and named the Rio de la Santos Reyes (River of the Holy Kings) or Kings River. Americans in the San Joaquin Valley The first band of Americans entered the Valley in 1827 when Jedediah Smith and a group of fur traders traversed it from south to north. This journey ushered in the first American frontier as fifteen years of fur trapping followed. Still, none of these men reported sighting the giant trees. It was not until 1833 that members of the Joseph R. 1lalker expedition crossed the Sierra Nevadas and received credit as the first whites to See the Sequoia trees. These trees are presumed to form part of either the present M"rced or Tuolwnregroves. Others did not learn of their find since Walker's group failed to report their discovery.

    Walk distance: It is approximately 1 mile to get to the trail from Barley Car Park including one uphill stretch and one steep path. John Muir-Kings Canyon National Park Commands Wide Support The proposed John Muir-Kings Canyon National Park would preserve for all time in the National Park System the superlative canyons ol the Kings River, described by John Muir in the accompanying Century article, lirst published in 1891, together with the Evolution Basin and the high peaks of the finest part of the Sierra Nevada, including Mt. Clarence King, Mt. Hatchings, the Sphinx, Tehipite Dome, Paradise Peak, Glacier Monu­ ment, Avalanche Peak, Grand Sentinel and scores of others. The park would encompass Muir, Cartridge, Mather and Granite Passes, and, along the boundary would touch Alts. Darwin, Haeckel, Pinchot, and the Pali­ sades as well as Bishop, Taboose, Sawmill, Kearsarge and Forester Passes.
