Launched by Alsop and the BSO in 2017, the New Music Festival brings contemporary classical music to Baltimore from June 19-22. The 2019 New Music Festival celebrates women composers ahead of the BSO’s 2019-20 season, which highlights women in music in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the U.S. Performances include the Baltimore premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto, a BSO co- commission, as well as the world premiere of Anna Clyne’s cello concerto, Dance, with Inbal Segev. “I’m thrilled that this year’s New Music Festival features such an outstanding group of contemporary composers, who happen to be women!” said Alsop. “Each piece of music that we’ve programmed tells a unique and compelling story, and we are proud to present a range of voices and perspectives that showcases some of the most inspired work happening in classical composition today.” The 2019 New Music Festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 19 when composer Sarah Kirkland Snider participates in a discussion on her composition process at Red Emma’s Bookstore Café. On Thursday, June 20, Associate Conductor Nicholas Hersh leads members of the BSO and Shara Nova, also known as My Brightest Diamond, in a free concert at the Ottobar. -

Last year’s event celebrated a milestone of fifty years and I hope that this conference marks an auspicious beginning for the next fifty. We’ve worked hard to ensure that it will. The theme is Collaborative Exchanges: Photography in Dialogue. The key word in the title is “dialogue,” and we hope the programming will celebrate artistic practices that employ the photographic image while embracing relationships. This could be a social component, working directly with other artists or writers, creating dialogue with communities, forming collectives or shared resource banks, building public artworks, or otherwise working in expanded practice with others to make new art. -

About Baltimore—Charm City
Baltimore, Maryland - Charm City, USA Baltimore is the principal city and port of entry of Maryland and is the 13th largest city in the US, with a metropolitan area population in excess of 2.5 million. More than 100,000 students live in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Baltimore was named for the first Lord Baltimore, George Calvert, who was granted a charter key by King Charles in 1632 to establish an English colony in the New World. The first settlement on the site was made in 1662, and the town of Baltimore was laid out in 1730. The city owes its existence to the natural, deep- water harbor formed where the Patapsco River empties into the mammoth Chesapeake Bay. From its 1730 founding to the present, Baltimore has been a vital shipbuilding center and one of the nation’s largest commercial ports. Baltimore is centrally located and is only 40 miles away from Washington D.C., 70 miles away from Philadelphia, and is about 180 miles away from the New York City. By Maryland’s MARC train it costs about $5 and takes less than an hour to reach Washington, D.C. and by Amtrak train it costs about $60 and takes about 2.5 hours to Reach New York City. You can also reach New York by Greyhound bus for $25-35 (about 4-hour trip). Baltimore–Washington International Airport is one of the biggest and busiest airports in the nation and is a hub for US Airways, Southwest and United Airlines. One can catch a direct flight from Baltimore to almost any major city in America. -

This legislation creates the Maryland Matthew D. Gallagher Chair Arts and Culture Capital Grant Program, a new capital grant fund that will be Doreen Bolger administered by the Maryland State Arts Council. The Program has two Vice Chair components - a competitive grant program for large institutions ($3 m+ budgets) April Nyman and another one for mid-size to small institutions.
