Dear Derelict Digits, Well, the solution to the issue depends largely on the reason why you cannot seem to follow up and make the phone call once you have the number.

If it’s because of a fear of rejection, then there are a few things you need to keep in mind. If you don’t make an attempt then you are essentially forcing them to reject you with- out even getting a chance to accept your offers. Yet, I know as someone who is afraid of rejection myself that it is never so simple. What is even more important to remember is that genuine expressions of interest and romance are increasingly rare these days. More than once I have gone out on a limb to ask a pretty and enchanting girl on a date and I am usually met with lots of enthusiasm because I am honest about my intentions and no one asks people out on dates anymore. More and more, college romance finds its foundations in hook-ups and alcohol so when you ask someone out on a date it is a welcome surprise. Keep in mind this is no guarantee of anything further beyond a chance at a date, but it is a foot in the door.

Alternatively, if you are finding yourself uninterested after getting the number then the person may just not be right for you. The chase is fun, and once you get the number you may get bored. If that is the case, then I would just say wait for the right girl to inspire the want to call in you.

Yours, Archer

Injuries have held the men’s soccer team back Corey Johns Editorial Staff

Last year, UMBC soccer fans were treated with an impressive 9-0 start in which the team dominated their competition. This year the team has been playing well, but hasn't quite repeated that amount of success, starting the season just 4-3-1 so far. Now, let me be the first to say, that's not a bad start. It's not what they did last year, but that was just simply incredible. The goal of the team isn't to be the "September Champions" as Coach Pete Caringi Jr. puts it; it's to win in November during the America East Conference tournament. The men's soccer team may be on their way to doing that. They have the offense in place, and the defense is improving. I have to admit though; even I put the men's soccer on a pedestal too high in the beginning of the season. I saw the addition of guys like Nirav Kadam and Danny Shannon and Pete Caringi III and thought nothing could stop this team now. Defenses could no longer just mark Levi Houapeu and Andrew Bulls—which teams were going at the end of last season, and cripple the offense. But I looked past one major thing from from the offense, there were three new guys expected to make an impact. Sure Houapeu grew up with Kadam and Shannon, but they didn't play together too much. It takes time for them to all mesh together, learn each other's tendencies, and produce a high-scoring offense. It took Houapeu and Bulls a whole year before they became the dynamic duo that they were last year. However, the offense is coming together and is showing they are a much more balanced group than last year. But the other thing that has hurt the men's soccer team was, and still is, injuries. The team started the season without starting left back Jason McCarron and left midfielder Sean Rothe. Also, after starting the season 2-0, center midfielder John Paul Waraksa suffered a knee injury during the team's 5-3 loss to Towson and hasn't seen the field since. While Mc- Carron returned against Binghamton, which coincidently was a game that both the coaches and players said the defense really improved in, Rothe and Waraksa are still missing. Rothe had offseason knee surgery, and his return is unknown. Waraksa's return is also unknown, at least to the public, at this point Those three injuries were rough at the beginning of the season. Rothe and Waraksa were three-year starters in the midfield coming into the season, doing all the dirty work for the team. Last year Rothe probably ran more than anybody Harish Trivedi — TRW on the team, playing both offensive and defensive roles. Waraksa probably had possession of the ball more than anybody Junior goalkeeper Dan Louisignau is one example of how the men’s soccer on the team and had a great ability of heading the ball out of danger on a consistent basis. There are no reports that either team is intent on getting the best players on the field, as he beat out starter Phil Saunders for the goalkeeper job with strong efforts in practice. one is going to be red-shirted this year, which will give hope to a team that is ready to win an America East Conference championship now. UMBC is still really good without them, but with them they are a serious championship contender. As for McCarron, he's really developed over his three-years at UMBC. He didn't see the field much in his freshman year as he was blocked by several seniors, but last year he worked his way into the starting lineup, and proved to be one of the team's top guys on the backline. Then against Loyola, he went down with an ankle injury, and has been struggling with that injury ever since. Now though, he's completely healthy and should really help out a back line that was forced to start forwards and midfielders because they didn't have much else from which to choose. It's a work in progress. Sure it would have been lovely to see the men's soccer team start 9-0 while dominating their competition again, but this year's team might be more complete. Part of what led to all of last year's early success was a favorable schedule with a lot of home games, and the fact that they weren't expected to do anything. They finished the 2008 season in last place and were picked to finish last in the conference last year but surprised everybody. This year there is no surprising anybody. UMBC is the team with the bull’s eye on it’s back now, and while teams are always play- ing their best against the Dawgs, the team should be much better prepared for a difficult conference, and a much more complete team by the season’s end.

Dan with GOOD CALL Levin Volleyball keeps improving as youth matures Dan Levin Editorial Staff

UMBC women’s volleyball has had an interesting start to the season as they enter conference play. The team brought in eight freshmen and had a tough challenge with them trying to learn the same system. The team came to cam- pus and bonded in August as they got ready for a schedule that began with three big tournaments. First was the Battle of Baltimore, which spanned over two days and took place at the RAC and Morgan State University. UMBC opened the season with a dominant, three set victory over Coppin State University. That was the first time fans got to see freshman Ali Goc in action as she began her college career with 12 kills, four service aces, and three digs. This led her on her way to be the America East Conference rookie of the week. As for the rest of the tournament she tallied 24 kills, 15 digs, and three service aces. The second and third matches of the tournament found UMBC being swept in straight sets against Loyola and Towson. However, in the final match of the tournament, UMBC got back up to .500 with straight sets win over Morgan St. This was a team effort for the Retrievers as five players had five kills or more, including three freshmen. Assists were spread evenly between Rebecca Garrigues and Mallory McIntyre and every player to touch the floor for UMBC recorded a dig. It was a good way to go out of the Battle of Baltimore. Then came a matchup with George Washington in which UMBC found themselves losing in straight sets. They looked overpowered as they only hit .073 to GW’s .307 and recorded only 19 team assists as opposed to 39 from GW. Next came the biggest test for UMBC, the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament. The tournament brought some big- name schools to the RAC such as Ohio St., Brown, and Sacred Heart. Once again the Retrievers kicked off the tournament with a three set victory, this time over local rival Howard. Ali Goc led the team in kills once again, this time with 10. Next the Retrievers found themselves up against Big 10 power Ohio State, but UMBC didn’t back down and nearly took the opening set from the Buckeyes. But Ohio State pulled it together to defeat the Retrievers in straight sets. Sabrina Hoeks hit .429 Corey Johns — TRW and seven kills, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Ohio State and tournament MVP Katie Dull. Pete Caringi III scored his fifth goal of the season in his first career start after he headed a cross from Levi Houapeu past the Binghamton goalkeeper. Then came Ivy League opponent Brown, who earlier in the tournament ended Towson’s perfect season. The Retrievers came to play and defeated the Bears in four sets, led by Ali Goc’s first collegiate double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs. To close out the tournament UMBC was bested by Sacred Heart in a tough, hard-fought four set match in which the Pioneers only UMBC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IS outscored UMBC by four points in the match total. Then came the struggles for UMBC, as after Sacred Heart the Retrievers lost six straight, including matches at the Seton Hall SEEKING HARD-WORKING FANS Invitational, Georgetown, and Towson. It was a tough stretch for UMBC, but one that served as a good learning experience for a younger team. TO SERVE AS TEAM MANAGERS The next victory came just this past Sunday, as UMBC moved to 1-1 in conference play by beating Binghamton. After mov- ing some people around, UMBC is ready to get into the thick of the conference action with a shot at the title. The Retrievers FOR THE 2010-2011 SEASON. were picked to finish third in the America East preseason coaches poll and look to go even higher then that. Freshman Hallie Carter had done most of the libero work for UMBC this season until a trip to Towson last week. Coach Ian Blanchard decided to make a change and go with Ali Goc as the libero which is an interesting move considering Goc was second in kills on the team and Carter was first in digs. Both players performed well in their new roles despite the two losses to Towson and Albany. However, against Binghamton, Blanchard switched them back and each player picked up right where they left off, racking up kills and digs as the Retrievers got their first confer- ence win.
