  • Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Announces 2019 New Music Festival
Media contacts Linda Moxley, VP of Marketing & Communications 410.783.8020 [email protected] Devon Maloney, Director of Communications 410.783.8071 [email protected] For Immediate Release Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Announces 2019 New Music Festival Baltimore (April 18, 2019) Under the leadership of Music Director Marin Alsop, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) announces the 2019 New Music Festival. Launched by Alsop and the BSO in 2017, the New Music Festival brings contemporary classical music to Baltimore from June 19-22. The 2019 New Music Festival celebrates women composers ahead of the BSO’s 2019-20 season, which highlights women in music in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the U.S. Performances include the Baltimore premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto, a BSO co- commission, as well as the world premiere of Anna Clyne’s cello concerto, Dance, with Inbal Segev. “I’m thrilled that this year’s New Music Festival features such an outstanding group of contemporary composers, who happen to be women!” said Alsop. “Each piece of music that we’ve programmed tells a unique and compelling story, and we are proud to present a range of voices and perspectives that showcases some of the most inspired work happening in classical composition today.” The 2019 New Music Festival kicks off on Wednesday, June 19 when composer Sarah Kirkland Snider participates in a discussion on her composition process at Red Emma’s Bookstore Café. On Thursday, June 20, Associate Conductor Nicholas Hersh leads members of the BSO and Shara Nova, also known as My Brightest Diamond, in a free concert at the Ottobar.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

  • Nightlight: Tradition and Change in a Local Music Scene
NIGHTLIGHT: TRADITION AND CHANGE IN A LOCAL MUSIC SCENE Aaron Smithers A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Curriculum of Folklore. Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Glenn Hinson Patricia Sawin Michael Palm ©2018 Aaron Smithers ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Aaron Smithers: Nightlight: Tradition and Change in a Local Music Scene (Under the direction of Glenn Hinson) This thesis considers how tradition—as a dynamic process—is crucial to the development, maintenance, and dissolution of the complex networks of relations that make up local music communities. Using the concept of “scene” as a frame, this ethnographic project engages with participants in a contemporary music scene shaped by a tradition of experimentation that embraces discontinuity and celebrates change. This tradition is learned and communicated through performance and social interaction between participants connected through the Nightlight—a music venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Any merit of this ethnography reflects the commitment of a broad community of dedicated individuals who willingly contributed their time, thoughts, voices, and support to make this project complete. I am most grateful to my collaborators and consultants, Michele Arazano, Robert Biggers, Dave Cantwell, Grayson Currin, Lauren Ford, Anne Gomez, David Harper, Chuck Johnson, Kelly Kress, Ryan Martin, Alexis Mastromichalis, Heather McEntire, Mike Nutt, Katie O’Neil, “Crowmeat” Bob Pence, Charlie St. Clair, and Isaac Trogden, as well as all the other musicians, employees, artists, and compatriots of Nightlight whose combined efforts create the unique community that define a scene.

Last year’s event celebrated a milestone of fifty years and I hope that this conference marks an auspicious beginning for the next fifty. We’ve worked hard to ensure that it will. The theme is Collaborative Exchanges: Photography in Dialogue. The key word in the title is “dialogue,” and we hope the programming will celebrate artistic practices that employ the photographic image while embracing relationships. This could be a social component, working directly with other artists or writers, creating dialogue with communities, forming collectives or shared resource banks, building public artworks, or otherwise working in expanded practice with others to make new art.

I went with two other friends from my private high school in Baltimore County to see two local bands; a punk set from Dope Body and a hip-hop duo called The Rap Dragons. We drove from my friend’s white wealthy suburban enclave called Homeland toward east Baltimore, not too far from Johns Hopkins University.

Sparklehorseplay Page 1 of 6 Sparklehorse Spring 1999 tour diary part 1 The South Rises Again? This tour diary is entirely the fault of one musician, and is not sanctioned by Sparklehorse Inc. You may believe that the characters are fictitious if you like.... Well, it all starts with a show in San Francisco, Victor Krummenacher and Alison Faith Levy at the Hotel Utah March 6th 1999. I played a couple songs with Alison and then the whole set with Victor, we got back to Victor's at about 3am, so I dozed in a chair 'til 5 when the shuttle came to pick me up to take me to the airport. a short layover in chicago, many people stranded by the weather there, but i got safely to Richmond, VA. where eventually i got picked up by Scott Minor and Mark Linkous in Mark's old diesel Mercedes wagon. out to the farm in Dillwyn to rehearse. on th eway we pick up a new instrument for Mark, a nylon string guitar that he is having a pickup put into. Already at the farm is David Dreiwitz, our new bass player. I met Dave originally may years ago when i was playing with Camper Van Beethoven and he was playing with Tiny Lights, but recently re - met him while doing shows in NY last fall with John Kruth. Dave also plays with Ween. So the band is Mark on guitar and singing and other weird sounds, Scott on drums and sampler, Dave on electric and acoustic bass, me (Jonathan) on guitar, violin, keyboards and glockenspiel, with both Dave and I singing background vocals.

  • Send Cash, Checks, Or Money Orders Made Payable to “MUTANT POP RECORDS.” QTY
It’s the incredible free! MutantMutant PopPop AE Mailorder Catalog http://members.aol.com/mutantpop/ After a humongo delay MP-35 THE CHUBBIES “She Wanted More” is finally on the street... Thanks very much for your patience! It was my fault all the way, I dragged my tail and dragged my tail again, no excuses. Anyway, it’s finally time for us to savor two more blasts of Jeannette the King’s power-pop magic—the title track roars and purrs with a growling guitar and sultry vocals, the classic CHUBBIES formula. It’s very fine! We all know that female-fronted power pop is outside of Maximum Rocknroll’s area of coverage these days (whereas boys can go as wussy as they wanna and still draw a review!) but that doesn’t mean you should be ignoring this sub-genre of the pop-punk world or this band in particular. Jeannette Chubbie simply must be counted among the relatively small number of first rank songwriters of the current period. She is that talented! While Jeannette’s guitar work punches hard, The King’s lyrics tend towards the smart and artistic. I’d no sooner give you my detailed interpretation of her work than I would give you my inter- pretation of collage art by Winston Smith or a Sue Coe painting. Listen and derive your own meaning. I will say in general terms that the A-side deals with angst and expectations from a female perspective and the flipside, a song called “Pseudo-Christ,” is an understated howl of anti-religious fury and artis- tic hope.
