Specific activities include entomological monitoring, larviciding, source reduction interventions, and indoor residual spraying. The reporting period covered by this Semi-Annual Report is October 2017 to March 2018. During this timeframe, ZAP was fully operational in six focus countries: Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Jamaica. Start-up and planning activities continued in Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Peru, and Eastern and Southern Caribbean (ESC). Highlights of ZAP accomplishments during this period include: In November 2017, ZAP organized a ZAP Leadership Conference to bring together ZAP staff from six implementing countries (Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Jamaica), home office technical and management teams, and USAID. This allowed the project to come together for the first time to reflect on lessons learned to date, reinforce and share best practices, and collaboratively identify innovative solutions for common challenges. Six countries (Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Jamaica) conducted routine entomological monitoring, including adult mosquito collection, egg collection, and larvae/pupae surveys. ZAP is using a combination of methods including the Prokopack aspirator, Gravid Aedes Trap (GAT), and BG-Sentinel traps for adult collection, ovitraps for egg collection, and manual collection and larval indices for larvae. Five countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Jamaica) implemented comprehensive vector control activities, combining source reduction through environmental management and routine larviciding with Bti. Comprehensive and robust insecticide susceptibility tests were conducted in five ZAP countries, through which ZAP has confirmed high levels of susceptibility to Bti in its operating areas. ZAP also trained Ministry of Health (MOH) entomologists in El Salvador, Honduras, Jamaica, and Paraguay on insecticide resistance testing in alignment with global protocols. New and innovative vector control methods were piloted in selected ZAP countries, including a pilot in the Dominican Republic on the use of lethal ovitraps as a method of both entomological monitoring and vector control. The ZAP Communications team finalized and distributed a ZAP Fact Sheet in English, Spanish, and Creole for use at the country level; it describes the project and project objectives to targeted households and counterparts. Also, a project video was filmed in Honduras; it shows the project scope, implementation approach, and stakeholder perspectives. The project organized a Regional Gender Training in March 2018, for ZAP gender focal points in each country, as well as representatives from the MOH in Jamaica, University of West Indies (UWI), and USAID. ZAP country teams collaborated extensively with MOH counterparts in each country, not only in planning and implementing ZAP activities, but also in exploring ways in which the project could support sustained efforts. Examples include: o ZAP DR held consultations with MOH and provincial health directorate staff, community leaders, and the Centro Nacional de Control de Enfermedades Tropicales 1 (CENCET) to assess community participation in vector control and entomological surveillance activities, in an effort to enhance sustainability. o In El Salvador, all ZAP project supervisors have an MOH counterpart at the Sistemas Básicos de Salud Integral (SIBASI) level to ensure ongoing coordination and collaboration in both vector control and entomological surveillance activities. o ZAP Guatemala benefited from close collaboration with the MOH, donating a small warehouse for ZAP use for storage of Bti and other materials. o ZAP Haiti and the MOH are
