MARK GIBB, CHIEF EXECUTIVE We launched our first newsletter earlier this year and have received really positive feedback from our community. We very much hope you enjoy Issue 02 of Haere Mai. 2020 has been a very challenging year for all of us. Back in February we were looking towards a record 12 months for passenger movements. By April the impacts of COVID-19 were becoming clear and our schedules had effectively shut down Dawn blessing of new terminal in May domestic travel for anyone other than essential workers. Our focus turned towards supporting essential air traffic and medical and emergency flights. Our business had to adapt at pace to our new world and we deployed our business continuity plan in the face of COVID-19 to ensure we could continue to operate, and our people, airport staff and customers could continue to use the airport safely. As at September 2020, we have built back to over 70% of Bilingual Signage our normal domestic schedule. The resilience of our team, the strength of our business partnerships and the positivity of the Rotorua community in supporting our resurgence, has been humbling. Over the last six months, in and amongst the challenges of COVID-19, we have continued to drive the growth and success of our Airport. We have recently completed the terminal redevelopment, are poised to open a new business hub for our customers, have completed a significant project of installing bilingual signage across our buildings, have delivered a programme of significant works across the airfield and have received Civil Aviation Authority certification for the Airport’s new Safety Management System. Our development Masterplan has been refined and we are looking to move forward with a number of new projects over coming months. As we draw towards the end of the year I would like to thank all those that have continued to support our Airport. We hope you enjoy our second edition of Haere Mai and we’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback. Terrace Airside is so much more than the typical airport café, we’re an east-side destination for those after the perfect brew and tasty treats, set in a cool casual atmosphere. Bring down your work crew or pack the kiddies into the car and pop down to watch the planes land from front row airside seats. DAVID DANIEL, RNZAF + ARTIST A few months ago I found a couple of unframed dusty old water colour paintings in the Rotorua Aero-club. I thought they were amazing and took them to get framed at Artworkz in Rotorua. When I popped in to pick them up a few weeks later, the framer said he’d met with the original artist and gave me a booklet about the set paintings - of which the Airport had the full collection, named ‘Flying the Thermal Skies’. I managed to track down the artist, a ‘sharp-as-a-tack’ 94 year old David Daniel. Once the prints were on the wall I invited David and his daughter in to view the collection, now displayed in the glass link walkway with plaques and descriptions. David was thrilled to see the collection, but I honestly think he enjoyed the ride on the Panther Fire Truck slightly more! Next time you’re in the terminal be sure to check out the collection. - Michelle Herrick David Daniel HAERE MAI | ROTORUA AIRPORT | SPRING 2020 | PAGE 7 The new Rotorua Airport Business Hub has been designed to create a relaxing and inspiring space to spend a few hours before flying.
