DESTROYER KEN CATALOG #: DOC140 ABOUT THE ALBUM RELEASE DATE : OCTOBER 20, 2017 FORMAT: CD/LP/DELUXE LP/DIGITAL Of his 12th studio album and its enigmatic title, Destroyer’s Dan Bejar offers the following: CD BOX LOT: 30 Sometime last year, I discovered that the original name for “The Wild Ones” (one of the great LP BOX LOT: 20 English-language ballads of the last 100 years or so) was “Ken.” I had an epiphany, I was physically DLX LP BOX LOT: 20 struck by this information. In an attempt to hold on to this feeling, I decided to lift the original title GENRE: ALTERNATIVE of that song and use it for my own purposes. It’s unclear to me what that purpose is, or what the connection is. I was not thinking about Suede when making this record. I was thinking about the TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NOT AVAILABLE IN last few years of the Thatcher era. Those were the years when music first really came at me like a NORTH AMERICA; EXCLUSIVE TO HOSTESS IN sickness, I had it bad. Maybe “The Wild Ones” speaks to that feeling, probably why Suede made no JAPAN sense in America. I think “ken” also means “to know.” VINYL NOT RETURNABLE ken was produced by Josh Wells of Black Mountain, who has been the drummer in Destroyer since 2012. The album was recorded in its entirety in the jam space/studio space that the group calls The Balloon Factory. However, unlike Poison Season , ken was not recorded as a “band” record, though everyone in the band does make an appearance.

  • Harmonic Stasis and Oscillation in Björk's Medúlla
Volume 16, Number 1, January 2010 Copyright © 2010 Society for Music Theory Harmonic Stasis and Oscillation in Björk’s Medúlla Victoria Malawey NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.10.16.1/mto.10.16.1.malawey.php KEYWORDS: harmony, stasis, oscillation, repetition, repose, tension, image schema, schemata, Björk, Medúlla ABSTRACT: Björk Guðmundsdóttir’s 2004 all-vocal album Medúlla provides an opportunity to explore processes of harmonic oscillation, the repetition of two or more alternating harmonies, and stasis, the continuous repetition of a single harmony. Qualities of timelessness are evoked through harmonic stasis, which allows for intricate vocal textures to come to the fore in songs such as “Komið” and “Öll Birtan.” “Who Is It” illustrates how local-level and global processes of harmonic oscillation interact and how traditional chord function may be negated through oscillation. To account for harmonic progressions that suggest tonal centricity, concepts of repose and tension are applied as interpretive models to passages from “Triumph of a Heart.” This paper offers a model to describe oscillation and combines models developed by Tim Hughes to explore other uses of harmonic oscillation and stasis. Overarching oscillations support extra-musical narratives suggested by song lyrics and music videos. These models of analysis can be applied to other songs by Björk, as well as other popular music, as an alternative to traditional methods of understanding tonal harmony, which break down for such songs. Received November 2009 The key musical procedure in popular music . lies in repetition and attendant processes of variation.

  • Everything Everything - a Fever Dream
Everything Everything - A Fever Dream Across three albums, immense acclaim and intense adoration, the sound of Everything Everything has remained a volatile beast; a musical bucking bronco, their albums maximalist, frenetic, art-pop juxtapositions of R’n’B and melancholia and Afrobeat, of synths, guitars, falsetto. Critics have written of the frenzy of it, of the sheer sublime sweet sensory overload of it all. Their fourth album, A Fever Dream, is a quite different prospect: a calibration of chaos and control, the result of a curious desire for consistency. As guitarist Alex Robertshaw puts it: “Our records have been many styles rubbing up against each other, and for the first time I wanted to make a record that was cohesive sonically.” Midway through touring 2015’s Get To Heaven, Robertshaw found himself listening increasingly to the kind of electronic music he had loved as a teenager — early Warp Records releases, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, relishing “the atmosphere and the attitude” of them. “I wanted to go back to that thing that first made me excited about music,” he says. “We’ve spent a lot of time going into that R’n’B and hip hop world — for an indie band it was a bit of an untouchable thing, and it was really fun to do and I think we captured it at its best with Kemosabe and Arc. But once you start doing that you kind of separate yourself.” Contemplating a fourth album, and after an extensive run of touring, Robertshaw felt a need to reconnect with the sounds that had first thrilled him and inspired him to begin making music.
