Horne PhD 2016 Care to Dance: Listening, Watching, Dancing and Reflecting the Practice of a Community Arts and Health Dance Artist working with Older People Maxine Horne A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre of Social Change and Community Well-being February 2016 Abstract The focus of this thesis is community arts and health provision for older people. It presents an ethnography of two community dance for older people groups in North West England, UK. It explores the experience of being a participant in the groups, of facilitating the groups and, additionally, of researching with the groups. I acted as both the researcher and the dance artist facilitating the sessions. Much of the existing arts and health literature focuses on the outcome of an intervention. This thesis instead turns its attention to the processes of community arts, seeking to understand more about the mechanisms that might lead to the studied health and well-being outcomes. The data were collected over a period of 13 months and includes session plans, videos of sessions, recorded conversations with dancers (participants) and reflections of the dance artist/researcher in both text and movement. The findings chapters reflect the modality of collection: Listening to the dancers talk about the sessions, Watching video recordings of the sessions, Dancing a response to the sessions and the process of researching and Reflecting through writing on the process of being a researcher.

It Was the Reunion No One Ever Thought They'd See But, 26 Years After A
he 1993 Ivor Novellos should have been one of the greatest moments of Marcella Detroit’s life. The singer-songwriter, one half of the mega-selling pop group Shakespears Sister, was on-stage to collect the band’s Ivor for Best Contemporary Collection Of Songs for their smash hit album, Hormonally Yours. Sadly, the other half of Shakespears Sister, former Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey, had other ideas. Fahey did not Tattend the ceremony, but her publisher, 2005 Music Week Strat Award winner Peter Reichardt of EMI, read out a statement that made it clear the band was finished and wished Detroit “all the best for the future”, before declaring: “All’s well that ends well”. The trouble was that, while Detroit knew all was definitely not well between her and her musical partner, this was the first time she’d heard that the band was officially over. “Getting that confirmation was very emotional for me,” says Detroit, 26 years later. “I have to admit I went back to the table and sobbed silently to myself…” Yes, as splits go, Shakespears Sister’s was as messy and public as humanly possible. But, as with most things to do with this most intriguing of pop groups, there was more to it than met the eye. And now that they are, against all odds, back together (“Hell froze over and pigs have flown!” declares Detroit), it’s time to get to the bottom of it all, once and for all… eeting Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit at their manager’s office in 2019, on the day Shakespears Sister’s return is formally announced, you’d never know they didn’t speak to each other for 25 years.

Congratulations to Winnipeg Public Library Nominators of De Niro’s Game I felt De Niro’s Game was beautifully written with a pace and storyline that catches the reader on the first page and doesn’t let go. Rawi Hage’s direct prose is interspersed with poetic rants, musical cadences and powerful images that lament the madness and horror of war. Through the characters we see the indelible effect of unrelenting violence on the individual psyche; they can find no comfort or peace of mind without a gun in their hand.
