    336 American Antiquarian Society. [Oct., SOME UNPUBLISHED LETTERS OF PEDRO DE LA GASCA RELATING TO THE CONQUEST OF PERU BY MARSHALL H. SAVILLE Introduction The final episode in the conquest of Peru was the subjugation of the rebellion under the leadership of Gonzalo Pizarro by the Licentiate Pedro de la Gasea. This event took place between the years 1546 and 1550. The general details of this affair, as also the causes which led to it, are so well known that the merest outline of this chapter of South American history is all that need be presented here. Gonzalo Pizarro, a brother of Francisco Pizarro the conqueror of Peru, headed a revolt against the Spanish Viceroy, Blasco Nunez Vela in 1544. He was soon recognized by the Royal Council, and took possession of Lima. On the return of the Viceroy from a visit to Panama, he was defeated in battle by Pizarro near Quito on January 18, 1546. In the meantime, in order to re-establish the royal authority, the King of Spain selected the Licentiate Casca as Pacifier of Peru, and on September 17, 1545, he was given a royal commission as President of the Council and Pacifier of Peru. Pedro de la Gasea was born in 1492 in the Caballeria de Navarregadilla, a small village near the Barco de Avila. After receiving a primary education he was sent to Salamanca, where he soon gave proof of his great talent and extraordinary application. He was 1917.] Letters of Pedro de la Gasea. 337 appointed a counselor of the Inquisition in Valencia in 1541, and was soon promoted to the office of Visitador.

  • Reseña Histórica
    Fundación Española de Moyobamba (25 de Julio de 1540) El Capitán Alonso de Alvarado (más tarde Mariscal), es quien dirige la expedición desde Trujillo hasta Chachapoyas acompañado de 13 soldados, entre los cuales estaba Juan Pérez de Guevara. Funda la ciudad de San Juan de la Frontera de Chachapoyas, el 5 de setiembre de 1,538. Sobre la fundación de Moyobamba, en cuanto al fundador existen dos opiniones: Unos afirman que fue don Alonso de Alvarado y otros don Juan Pérez de Guevara. En torno a don Alonso de Alvarado, el cronista Larrabure y Correa en sus "Documentos Oficiales" Tomo XVI Cap. V-Pág. 212, manifiesta: El verdadero fundador de Moyobamba (año 1539), fue Alonso de Alvarado. Algunas tribus no quisieron someterse al conquistador español y prefirieron retirarse a las márgenes del Ucayali y del Yavarí, donde existen ahora mismo con el nombre de Mayorunas, es decir hombres venidos del Mayo. La antigua ciudad fue fundada en el lugar que hoy se conoce con el nombre de Moyobamba, que es un montón de ruinas cubiertas de espeso bosque. Pero, aquel sitio tenía el inconveniente de estar muy lejos del Mayo. Así es que, cuando la ciudad fue destruida por el terremoto de 1746, se reedificó en el lugar que hoy ocupa, que se encuentra a 860 mts. sobre el nivel del mar, según Raymondi, y según Witherman, a 97 metros sobre el nivel del río Mayo. Otras de las informaciones, al respecto, indican que en Chachapoyas, en sesión del 14 de noviembre de 1538, a dos meses y nueve días de fundada la ciudad de San Juan de la Frontera, don Alonso de Alvarado comunicó al Cabildo que se ausentaba para proseguir con los descubrimientos de nuevas tierras, como estaba ordenado en la provisión del Gobernador Pizarro.

Also present was Father Hernando de Avendaño, one of his advisors, whose proficiency in Quechua was recognized in Lima’s official circles. The Prince of Esquilache spoke to him first. The viceroy wanted Avendaño to inquire why don Juan and his delegation had journeyed 130 miles from Lampas, the region over which don Juan presided as cacique principal,to oppose the granting of a license to build a textile mill (obraje) in their lands. Unbeknownst to His Excellency, don Juan was proficient in Castilian. Having understood the viceroy’s words to the priest, don Juan took the lead and replied in his native tongue directly, accompanying his statement with the corresponding gesture: ‘Sir, I’d rather have Your Excellency cut my head off than found the said obraje.’ Infuriated, Esquilache turned to Avendaño and demanded to know what the words and gestures of this fifteen-year-old native lord really meant. The priest explained: ‘Sir, what this cacique says is that it is well and good that the obraje be founded, even if it costs him his own head.’ Avendaño’s interpretation of the cacique’s words contradicted his intentions, but it soothed the viceroy.
