Spring 2021 TO: Rochester-Bern Students FROM: Karen Steiner, Director of Executive Programs SUBJECT: September 2021 Rochester Residency I am pleased to provide some preparation information about the 2021 Rochester Residency The web site for the admitted students can be found at http://www.simon.rochester.edu/accepted/brnemba/index.aspx This information will continue to be updated during the spring and summer, so please check back. The residency session is very busy, so review the student handbook, IT information and any other information thoroughly and carefully. The web site and student handbook include information about what to bring and what is available to you in Rochester—at the University, the hotel, and in the community. This way you will be prepared before you arrive. If you have any questions, you may contact the program office. VISA The first step in applying for a visa is the Request for the I-20, which is completed through the University of Rochester International Services Office (ISO). Students should watch for an email (sent to personal or work account) from the University of Rochester with a link to provide the information needed for the I-20 Form. This will include some passport and financial information; you will also need to upload a copy of the passport and financial information. You will need to use your University of Rochester NetID in order to complete this process. You received your account information shortly before you started the MBA Program; this included NetID information, but the NetID must be initialized by the student. The University of Rochester will then prepare the I-20. They are currently sent to students electronically. (Prior to COVID-19, distribution of just hard copy I-20 forms was permitted; it is possible we will be asked to return to this practice.) Please review your I-20 form as soon as you receive it to check for any errors. A SEVIS fee must be paid before you apply for your visa. The fee will be paid by the BRN Program office, and you will be mailed a receipt; you must present this receipt when you go to apply for your visa. There is a separate fee for the visa, for which the student is responsible. When you receive your I-20 form, you should sign it in the requested areas. You must then take the completed form, your SEVIS fee receipt, your passport and original bank statement to the American Consulate Office to apply for a visa. Visas should be checked carefully to ensure they are completed properly. Be sure the visa type and dates are correct and that the document is signed properly. If you forget any of your papers, you may not be admitted into the United States or Canada. (Note: Many students visit Canada during the summer residency. Canada does not require an additional visa for Swiss citizens; citizens of other countries need to check with the consulate's office.) 1 Significant Others/Dependents There is a section on the Request for I-20 to fill out for dependents (family members) who are traveling with you. However, in most cases, a Visa Waiver can be used (see below). If you have a question regarding the visa status of your family member(s), please contact the local consulate. Visa Types: F1 Visa Students Visa Waiver Please note you must complete an ESTA application and pay the fee. Dependents who intend to remain in the U.S. for fewer than 90 days, have a valid passport, a non-transferable, non-refundable round trip airline ticket and who are citizens of any of the “approved” countries are permitted to enter the U.S. without a visa. Please read here for details and required paperwork: http://www.iso.rochester.edu/immigration/categories/waiver.html F2 Visa Spouses arriving and departing with students (usually the Visa Waiver is used) B2 Visa Spouses/family visiting student during summer (usually the Visa Waiver is used) Canadian Visa Not required for Swiss Citizens who carry a U.S. visa and other required (for temporary paperwork. The University must account for all forms. PASSPORT AND OTHER DOCUMENTS Please check your passport and other documents carefully for correct departure dates, all necessary signatures and other possible errors. Before coming to Rochester, make a photocopy of your passport and other paperwork to keep in a separate place from your originals. You will be required to give the following paperwork to the International Services Office at the University of Rochester during Orientation (first class day in Rochester): • Original I-20 • Copy of photograph page of passport • Copy of visa page of passport • Copy of I-94 (available online after entering the United States.) When you arrive at the University of Rochester, the I-20 will be signed and returned to you (by the International Services Office) so that you may travel out of the United States and return. In addition, you should carry with you proof of financial support (the sponsorship form, tuition verification letter from the program office and bank statement). INSURANCE (HEALTH AND PROPERTY) The program does not provide health insurance coverage. Please check your medical insurance in advance for medical coverage during your stay in the United States. If it is not provided, please obtain coverage before your visit. If necessary, you may use the University's medical facility during your summer residency. Please Note: All costs are payable when service is rendered. After you return to Switzerland, you may process your medical expenses for reimbursement through your medical insurance provider.
