Of interest to our neighbours is the development 14th August, 2004-08-14 of ‘strandzeilen’ in the South-west, in the prov- laszlo westra ince of Zeeland, the delta area of the confluent Rhine and Meuse rivers. Almost all major sea arms in this delta have been closed off from the sea by huge dykes about thirty years ago after a major flooding of all the islands and land area in the delta during a major north-western storm in 1953. Since then there is a slow process of beach formation against some of these dykes, particularly at the intersection of dykes and the old land. The time has come to exploit these beaches for sailing.

We organized the Open Dutch Championship this year in Ouddorp, as a try out. The delta area as a location for international regatta’s has the advantage that it is much closer to the Belgian and French centers than Terschelling. And, indeed, more pilots than ever from

Approximately 70 dinners were cooked to perfection by our own Nord Embroden Steve Brown. Dorita and all the other ladies provided a wonderful repast of corn, fresh fruit, bread and potatoes.

The wind came up Sunday afternoon with a vengeance. Racing started with fairly light winds but they quickly built to 26 mph. It was quite a day of sailing particularly for our new Ladies fleet and Junior fleet. The winds stayed steady well into the evening.

Racing continued until dark when the band took over. The Educators played a mix of old- ies and traditional songs. During intermission the audience stepped on stage and beat out a couple of tunes with young Eddie on the drums. The band played well into early morn- ing with a huge campfire and moon providing a surreal atmosphere.

Monday started with a pancake breakfast in the big tent. Folks moved through the break- fast line as they woke up conveniently spread- ing out the service for a couple of hours.

Winds began to perk up around lunch time and some classes got underway. The twins chose a long course which provided some fluky and challenging sailing. The Juniors made it around the short course fairly easily. Racing stopped at 2:00 and awards followed in the big tent.

The weekend included a broomball champion- ship event for the kids, crazy hat contest, model glider fly-in and balloon animal contest. Several sailors ventured out to enjoy some moonlight sailing along the lakeshore. The temperatures were perfect all weekend and stayed nice even into the evening. Those that came early enjoyed a couple of additional days

NEWS FROM DENMARK

Rømø Strandsejler Club (RSC) has 100 members and still more are joining us. The nationalities of the members are several e.g. from Denmark, Germany and Sweden. At the RSC we have different classes like class III, class 5, Standard class and class DN. The DN class is recognised by an ice yacht reconstructed to a land yacht. Furthermore we have Mantas and Blo-Karts running.

With great success we have established a land yacht school. It is located on the beach from May to October. The students receive a professional teaching in land sailing and theory. Afterwards an examination at the RSC will give them license to join regattas.

On the south end of Rømø, the RSC has 16 km² excellent beach at its disposition. A very flat and fine beach and superb wind conditions are some of the trademarks for the RSC’s area.

At the first weekend in August we have had a major event - our yearly International Regatta. Landsailers from Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland were joining. With perfect weather conditions, sunshine and not a cloud on the sky, about 40 yachts in different classes attended. The beach and wind conditions were excellent, about 6-7 m/s., and high speeds were reached. In the evening a barbecue at the local restaurant gave the regatta a more familiar dimension. The pilots were excited about our International Regatta and promised to tell about it at home to friends and family. It is worth visiting our International Regatta.

At our homepage www.strandsejler.dk you can find more information about RSC and results from our regattas.

Kind regard

Eigil Michelsen Vicepresident RSC

Finally the topic was mentioned in the FISLY Council meeting in January in Hamburg in pres- ence of the French president. What did we have to do to organize this event again ? The answer was simple: You ask for the necessary permissions and you organize it !

So a collabaration started between the Yacht Club Sankt Peter-Ording, the Royal Sand Yacht Club of De Panne and the Bleriot Club from Le Touquet. The local club agreed also to wel- come us and to participate in the organisation.

On the 10th of july at 11 AM we were there with about 20 yachts ready to take of for a guided tour. A race could not be held because we did- n’t get all the necessary permissions from the authorities. Among us was Garreth Rowland from the UK and Hans Werner Eickstaedt from Germany, many Belgians and some French pilots. The wind was coming up smoothly.
