Jacksonian America Readings (In Order of Discussion) Mr. Levin Spring 2012 American Political Thought POLS 5025 Jacksonian America Readings (in order of discussion): Henry Clay, Speech on the Tariff, 389 John Quincy Adams, First Annual Message to Congress, 392 Andrew Jackson, First Annual Message to Congress, 419; Veto of Maysville Road Bill, 424; Bank Veto Message, 427 Daniel Webster, Speech on Jackson’s Veto of the United States Bank Bill, 443 George Bancroft, “The Office of the People in Art, Government, and Religion,” 451 James Fennimore Cooper, The American Democrat, 465 Major Themes for Discussion: The Jacksonian period is most notable for its great debates over the definition of American national state. Comparing the State of the Union addresses of J.Q. Adams and Andrew Jackson provides one with a sense of that debate, as does the contrast between Jackson’s “Bank Veto Message” and Daniel Webster’s speech in response to Jackson’s veto message, and the visions of George Bancroft and James Fennimore Cooper. All of these debates seemingly continue in the modern day and age, no matter that our circumstances as a nation have changed so greatly. Questions for Readings: Compare the State of the Union addresses of J.Q. Adams and Andrew Jackson. What kind of nation does each new president envision? In which ways are these visions opposed? What are the assumptions behind each president’s visions? Which is more closely connected to our modern understanding of American politics? Andrew Jackson, in his Bank Veto Message and Daniel Webster, in his Speech on Jackson’s Veto of the United States Bank Bill, provide us with directly opposing views regarding the Bank. How much of the conflict is about the Bank itself, and how much is about differing visions for the United States? What are those visions? George Bancroft, in his “The Office of the People in Art, Government, and Religion,” and James Fennimore Cooper, in his The American Democrat, present different visions of the meaning of equality. Is Bancroft’s lofty vision of the common people truly democratic, or does it ask them to aspire to be like the academic elite of which Bancroft was a member? Is Cooper’s vision aristocratic or is he the true Democrat in his insistence on letting people be as he finds them? .

American historiography began with the Norse sagas but with the Spanish historians there began a chain of narration that links with our own day, and Richard Hakluyt was to write volumes about imperial expansion before the English began their colonization of America. With this introduction Michael Kraus takes up the historians of the first settle- ments-John Smith, William Bradford, John Winthrop, and on through the Mathers. The chapters that follow, in the main, proceed chronologically : The Era of Colonialism ; The Growing National Spirit: 1750-1800 ; Gathering the Records- Awaiting the National Historian ; Patriots, Romantics-and Hildreth; Francis Parkman; The Rise of the “Scientific School” ; Henry Adams ; The Nationalist School ; The Imperial School of Colonial History ; The Frontier and Sectional Histor- ians ; Biography ; and Contemporary Trends. In 1891 James Franklin Jameson published a sketch of American historical writing, carrying his study to the 1880’s. In 1917 John Spencer Bassett published his The Middle Group of American Historians, chiefly concerned with Sparks, Bancroft, and Peter Force. Not until 1937 when Michael Kraus published his A History of American History was any survey of the whole field of American historical writing available.

    Gordon A. Craig President American Historical Association 1982 11 } Gordon Alexander Craig, president of the American Historical Association, is the J. E. Wallace Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Stanford University. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1913; at the age of twelve he immigrated to the U.S. from Canada with his parents. He attended Princeton University where he re ceived his AB in 1936, the MA in 1939, and his PhD in 1941. During this period he was also a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford where he received a B.Litt. in 1938. His field is ndern Europe with research interests focusing on Germany since 1648, diplomacy, and military affairs. Professor Craig taught as an instructor at Yale Uni versity from 1939 to 1941; after two years he returned to Princeton to teach there. He remained at Princeton for the next twenty years: from 1941 to 1943 as an instruc tor, from 1943 to 1949 as associate professor, and from 1950 to 1961 as full professor. Concurrently he was a visiting professor at Columbia University in 1947—48 and in 1949—50. In 1961 he imjved to Stanford where he teaches three days a week to classes of four hundred students. He is widely regarded as aong the greatest of the uni versity’s teachers, and in recognition of his vital con tribution to scholarship and teaching he became the first J. E. Wallace Sterling Professot of the Humanities in 1969, a rank he still holds. He chaired the history de partment from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1979, and had a great impact in strengthening the department.

    George Bancroft: Master Historian GEORGE ATHAN BILLIAS 'M HAPPY that Ellen Dunlap, John Hench, and Jim Moran invited me to speak here because it gives me an opportunity I to repay in a small way the great debt I owe the Society. My indebtedness is profound both personally and professionally. Speaking personally, I first saw Margaret, who is now my wife, in this great hall. We were married in the Eirst Baptist Church across the street, and through Marcus McCorison's good graces held our wedding reception in the Goddard-Daniels House. Here I have also made many good friends: Joanne Chaison, Nancy Bur- kett, Gigi Barnhill, Stan Shapiro, Marie Lamoureux, Tom Knoles, and others who helped me over the years. Professionally, I wrote my Elbridge Gerry biography back in the stacks—that is, when a reader could go into the stacks. At my retirement in 1989, a symposium was held in my honor under what Esther Eorbes called this 'generous dome.' My debt to the Society is enormous, and my effort tonight constitutes only a modest repajmient. Two hundred and eighty paces from where we are sitting, there stands a tiny tablet on Salisbury Street. It marks the birthplace of George Bancroft, whose two hundredth anniversary we cele- brated last year. Symbolically, the plaque is too small to reflect his 'George Bancroft, Master Historian' was presented as a public lecture in Antiquarian Hall on May 15, 2001.     The Contributions of Samuel Adams to the American Revolution: A Historiographic Analysis by Karen Perkins As John Adams stated in a letter to Thomas Jefferson on May 27, 1819, Samuel Adams’ character “will never be accurately known to posterity as it was never sufficiently known to its own age.”1 Adams made it a habit to burn or cut up his correspondences and personal writings, going so far as to end one wartime letter with “Burn this.”2 His collected writings fill only four volumes where as George Washington’s writings fill thirty-six volumes.3 The elusiveness of the character of Samuel Adams has allowed for a wide interpretation of his place and influence in American Revolution. Prominent American Revolution histories rarely discuss Adams at length and there are few biographies about him. With Samuel Adams’ description in history going from heroic father of the Revolution to zealot and propagandist directing mobs to a complex man who greatly influenced the American Revolution, this essay will evaluate how the various interpretations of Samuel Adams over time in prominent American Revolutionary histories that discuss him and biographies, specifically analyzing arguments about his motivation and influence in beginning and sustaining the American Revolution. The first histories of the American Revolution began to appear in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. These Whig histories were written from the winners’ perspective and look at the Revolution in heroic and divine terms. Most of the Whig histories mention Samuel Adams but do not delve into his contributions to the Revolution.
