The film returns to a pivotal time in modern Czech history, ignored in Czech cinema until now. It begins with a reconstruction of the shocking act of a Czech university student, who in protest of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, set himself on fire in Prague’s Wenceslas Square on January 16, 1969, and died four days later. Through the story of the brave defense attorney Dagmar Burešová, who defended Palach’s legacy in a doomed lawsuit, the film examines the transformations taking place in Czechoslovak society after the invasion of the armies of the Warsaw Pact in August of 1968 and the installation of a hardline Communist government. It depicts the beginnings of Czech and Slovak resistance against the occupation, which reached its apex with the mass protests during Palach’s funeral. It also shows the nation’s gradual resignation under the pressure of fear and harsher persecution. LONG SYNOPSIS Part I On the 16th of January1969 on Wenceslas Square in Prague, a young student sets himself on fire in front of dozens of passers-by. ABSTRAKT Předmětem bakalářské práce bude analýza inscenace Shakespearova Richarda III. od slovenského režiséra Martina Huby. Inscenace byla vytvořena roku 2012 pro festival Letní shakespearovské slavnosti. Cílem práce bude pokusit se vřadit toto jevištní ztvárnění do kontextu dalších Hubových inscenací, které vytvořil v rámci uvedeného festivalu, a celkově charakterizovat jeho postoj a režijně interpretační přístup k dramatickému dílu Williama Shakespeara. Východiskem mi budou představení zhlédnutá v rámci LSS nebo ze záznamu, recenze a další ohlasy v tisku, rozhovor s tvůrcem či dalšími účastníky inscenačního procesu. At the beginning of this century and this millennium, publishing a brochure like this made little sense, sin- ce the number of new independent films could be counted on the fingers of one, maybe two hands and ‹ the funds for the support of independent cinema and audiovisual production equaled the value of the budgets of one or two unde- manding features, i.e. one or perhaps two million Euros. And then, what would such a handbook be good for when Slovakia would not take part in any major market such as Marché du Film in Cannes, EFM in Berlin, or AFM in Los Angeles and there was little interest in new Slovak films and the possibility of shooting films in Slovakia? Today, the situation is completely different and it has become quite natural to introduce at prestigious European markets and festivals dozens of new projects of all genres and promote opportunities for coproduction and shooting movies on Slovak locations. -

1316 NGOs working on diverse human rights issues, from 174 States and territories around the world call for the renewal of the mandate of the Independent Expert on violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity 41st session of the Human Rights Council Item 8. General Debate Oral Statement Speaker: Phylesha Brown – Acton Mr. President, I have the honour to deliver this statement that was endorsed by 1316 organisations working on diverse topics. Around the world, millions of people face human rights violations and abuses because of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI). These abuses include: killings and extrajudicial executions; torture, rape and sexual violence; enforced disappearance; forced displacement; criminalization; arbitrary detentions; blackmail and extortion; police violence and harassment; bullying; stigmatization; hate speech; denial of one’s self defined gender identity; forced medical treatment, and/or forced sterilization; repression of the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly, religion or belief; attacks and restrictions on human rights defenders; denial of services and hampered access to justice; discrimination in all spheres of life including in employment, healthcare, housing, education and cultural traditions; and other multiple and intersecting forms of violence and discrimination. These grave and widespread violations take place in conflict and non-conflict situations, are perpetrated by State and non-State actors (including the victims’ families and communities) and impact all spheres of life. In 2016, this Human Rights Council took definitive action to systematically address these abuses, advance positive reforms and share best practices – through regular reporting, constructive dialogue and engagement – and created an Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). -

41st session of the Human Rights Council Item 3 – General Debate Monday 1 July 2019 Federatie van Nederlandse Verenigingen tot Integratie Van Homoseksualiteit — COC Nederland, joined by the Swedish Federation of LGBT Rights - RFSL Read by: Alexander Hammelburg Thank you President, This statement is supported by one hundred organizations from 42 European and Central Asian countries.1 Across the European continent and Central Asia, from Amsterdam to Kyiv, individuals experience different grave human rights violations on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. These include murder, rape, assault, torture, arbitrary arrest, forced sterilization, medicalization and psychiatric interventions, conversion therapy, discrimination in access to health care, employment, housing and education, repression of freedom of expression and association, attacks and restrictions on human rights defenders, denial of police services, extortion, bullying, denial of one’s self-defined gender identity, and other abuses. Three years ago, by creating the mandate for an Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender identity the Human Rights Council took a historic and much needed action to bring these human rights violations to an end, and advance positive reforms. Since the creation of the mandate, the Independent Experts worked closely with both government and civil society stakeholders to improve laws, regulations and policies, and to bring them in line with international human rights standards. During its most recent mission to Ukraine earlier this year, the mandate holder was able to enter into dialogue freely to discuss the root causes and solutions to combat violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, in order for all people to live free and equal. -

The current COVID-19 pandemic has reached an extent we could so far see only in the most bizarre catastrophic films. Numerous limiting restrictions brought about by the pandemic severely affected, among others, also social and cultural areas, including film. Closed cinemas, cancelled festivals, lack of social contacts and significant restrictions in travelling have been some of the consequences. However, despite all the problems and challenging conditions, new film projects still keep emerging and I believe that current and the coming year will bring new films following in the footsteps of The Painted Bird and Charlatan which made Czech filmmakers visible internationally. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INNOVATIONS IN SCIENCE AND EDUCATION MARCH 20-22, 2019, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC WWW.ISEIC.CZ, WWW.JOURNALS.CZ THE SHAKESPEARES OF JOZEF CILLER, STAGE DESIGNER Dagmar Inštitorisová1 Abstract: The study The Shakespeares of Jozef Ciller tackles the Renaissance manner of the expression in the topic defined by its title using historical and comparative analyses. The author of the study analysed the way the scenographer projected general attributes of the European Renaissance (visual art, architecture) into specific theatre productions based on the remaining archive material (stage designs, production photographs, video recordings, production reviews and similar) and personal communication with Jozef Ciller. The analyses also contain the identification of the transfer of the architecture and the scenography of the Elizabethan theatre Renaissance. Another line thanks to which the scenography for Shakespeare has been traced is the analyses of the Renaissance elements according to the location of the scenography – whether it was aiming for interior or exterior space. The scenography of Jozef Ciller elaborates on characteristics of renaissance exterior and interior architecture or creates, by its means, a new theatrical reality. Even the original dramatic reality often works with motives of plays in the renaissance Elizabethan style: the space of the stage and the auditorium is united through an active display for the actors and their presentation. Such approach is typical for Ciller’s scenography in general, not just for Shakespeare’s plays. The result of the study is the that Ciller uses Renaissance (theatrical and nontheatrical) elements as motives while retaining the awareness of the Renaissance spirit and greatness of human beings. -

He was awarded Czech Film and Television Academy Award - CZECH LION (Český lev) for KOOKY (Kuky se vrací, 2010), directed by the Oscar-winning director Jan Svěrák, and for the critically acclaimed film IN THE SHADOW (Ve stínu, 2012) by David Ondříček, co-written with his long time collaborator Jan P. Muchow. He also won Slovak Film and Television Academy Award (Slnko v Sieti) for the Best Original Score for Jiří Chlumsky’s film BROKEN PROMISE (Nedodržaný sľub, 2009). Novinski’s latest works include scores for the Czech box-office hit THE THREE BROTHERS (Tři bratři, 2014) by Jan Svěrák – a musical film for children, for a feature film ANGELS (Andělé, 2014) directed by a prolific Czech director Alice Nellis and for a feature documentary film by Martin Štrba WAVE VS. SHORE (vlna vs. břeh, 2014). He wrote a score to the latest feature film by Jan Hřebejk THE TEACHER that premiered at Karlovy Vary IFF 2016 and for which he received a FICX Award for the Best Score at 54. Introduction This thesis demonstrates the actual situation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (hereafter 'LGBT') people and their opportunities in social life, in the terms of a law. The work suggests that the current situation in the Czech Republic and Slovakia has been largely influenced by the foreign development, especially the British one. The English-speaking world is influencing other countries is a variety of spheres, notably the LGBT rights, visibility and acceptance. The thesis deals with the LGBT rights and organisations and its actual situation in the Anglophone world, notably in the Great Britain and it is compared to the Czech and Slovak Republics, with a connection showing the mutual influences among the countries.
