Johnson, conductor The music Notes by the composer The Seven Heavens (2014/2016) Chamber Version The Seven Heavens is a musical portrait of C. S. Lewis portrayed in the imagery of the mediaeval planets. The work has its genesis in Belfast, where C. S. Lewis was born and the city which he always called home, even though he lived and worked in Oxford for most of his life. The Seven Heavens was commissioned by my friends in the Belfast Philharmonic and their conductor Stephen Doughty for a celebratory concert with the Ulster Orchestra. It was for the close of the 2014-2015 concert season which marked the 140th anniversary of the choir’s foundation in 1874. The initial scoring was for huge orchestra—fitting for the Ulster Hall—and even made use of the hall’s famous and majestic organ. After the magnificent 2015 Belfast première another opportunity arose from conversations with my friend Eric Johnson who was keen to commission a work for his renowned choir Cor Cantiamo.
