All compositions on the record are by Iro Haarla. Saxophonist/flutist Juhani Aaltonen and pianist/harpist Iro Haarla first collaborated in drummer/composer Edward Vesala’s various ensembles in the late 1970s and early 1980s appearing on many of Vesala’s most important recordings. Aaltonen, Haarla and Vesala also performed together as the Edward Vesala Trio in 1983. Aaltonen and Haarla picked up their collaboration when Juhani Aaltonen formed his much praised quartet by expanding his trio in 2008 with the addition of Haarla on the piano and harp (Conclusions, TUM CD 021, and To Future Memories, TUM CD 036). Aaltonen and Haarla have also occasionally performed as a duo but Kirkastus marks their first duo recording and presents a new height for their collaborations. On Kirkastus, Aaltonen and Haarla play exclusively Haarla’s compositions with the mood ranging from quiet contemplation to powerful crescendos. Most of the compositions were composed specifically for this recording with a number of them inspired by Haarla’s favorite Psalms.

  • Tumfest12 Brings the Best of Finnish Jazz to The
PRESS RELEASE 13.1.2012 TUMfest12 brings the best of Finnish jazz to the Savoy Theatre and Temppeliaukio Church this February TUMfest12 will once again present many of the top names in Finnish jazz as well as the new 22-piece orchestra TUMO, performing under the leadership of trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith. Starting on Friday, February 17, TUMfest12 will bring to Helsinki one of the true masters of improvised and creative music: trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith. The three-day festival will also feature the duo of two Finnish jazz icons, saxophonist Juhani Aaltonen and pianist Heikki Sarmanto, saxophonist Hepa Halme’s group Halme Prospekt, trombonist Jari Olavi Hongisto, bassist Teppo Olavi Hauta-aho and drummer Olavi Louhivuori’s Olavi Trio performing with some of their best friends, pianist Esa Helasvuo playing solo, and Helsinki Summit, featuring trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, saxophonist Mikko Innanen and pianist Seppo Kantonen together with TUMO’s visitors from abroad. Wadada Leo Smith (b. 1941) has been a prominent trailblazer in modern jazz and improvised music for almost five decades. He has played together with saxophonist Anthony Braxton, guitarist Derek Bailey as well as drummers Ed Blackwell and Jack DeJohnette, among many others. Since the beginning of the 1970s, Smith has been leading his own ensembles and, in December 2011, he celebrated his 70th birthday by giving two concerts with six different ensembles at New York’s Roulette Theatre. These included his Golden Quartet and Silver Orchestra along with Mbira, whose first album (Dark Lady Of The Sonnets) TUM Records released last fall. At TUMfest12, Wadada Leo Smith will perform at two concerts.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Cinemascapes: Cinematic Sublimity and Spatial Configurations ¾ or ¾ Learning from Los Angeles A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and TV by Carolin Kirchner 2018 ã Copyright by Carolin Kirchner 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Cinemascapes: Cinematic Sublimity and Spatial Configurations ¾ or ¾ Learning from Los Angeles by Carolin Kirchner Doctor of Philosophy in Film and TV University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Kathleen A McHugh Due to the shift in production practices and the availability of lighter camera equipment in the mid-1960s, filmmakers began to cinematically explore Los Angeles (LA) many environments. Utilizing the city’s diverse neighborhoods, unique architectural styles, and geographical topography, their films created imaginary spaces that sought to specifically represent LA, but also reflected post-war American urban restructuring processes in general. European filmmakers John Boorman, Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda, and Michelangelo Antonioni seemed to be especially perceptive regarding the specificity of the spaces they encountered in Los Angeles, and their films illustrate ambivalent feelings toward the built environment¾feelings that seem to run parallel to cultural and theoretical investigations taking place in the academy. Aided by the founding of the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning, a new wave of scholars and theorists utilized ii Los Angeles in their writing as the most important case study for the postmodern megalopolis. Like Boorman, Demy, Varda, and Antonioni, neither of the leaders of this theoretical interest in Los Angeles¾ Kevin Lynch, Jane Jacobs, Reyner Banham, and Edward Soja ¾were native Californians.

  • Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water
Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean.
