Teoloë benader hierdie ondersoek vanuit ‘n verskeidenheid van uitgangspunte, maar daar blyk ‘n doelbewuste skuif te wees vanaf die retoriek van geluk na die retoriek van menslike florering. Die intuïtiewe tuiste van so ‘n ondersoek is die soteriologie, met die verlossingsleer se fokus op die goeie nuus van die evangelie. Derhalwe benader hierdie studie ook die ondersoek na geluk vanuit die landskap van verlossing, by wyse van teologiese karteerwerk, en word drie kontemporêre diskoerse daarin geïdentifiseer. ‘n Eerste diskoers beeld verlossing as versoening uit, en het daarmee hoofsaaklik ‘n forensiese interpretasie voor oë. The contemporary revival in happiness studies is accompanied by studies on the rhetoric of happiness. Theologians approach such inquiries from a variety of perspectives, but it would appear as if a deliberate shift from the rhetoric of happiness to the rhetoric of human flourishing is taking place. The intuitive location of such an inquiry is soteriology, because of the doctrine of salvation’s focus on the good news of the gospel. Therefore this study approaches the inquiry into happiness from the landscape of salvation, by way of theological cartography, wherein three contemporary discourses are identified. A first discourse portrays salvation as reconcilitation, wherein a forensic interpretation plays a pivotal role. John Calvin, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Willie Jonker are examined as three influential types of this discourse. A soteriological logic of faith is identified as a central pattern within this discourse, also in portraying human flourishing as piety, joy, and comfort. A second discourse portrays salvation as liberation, wherein an ethical interpretation plays a central role. Gustavo Gutiérrez, Mercy Oduyoye, and Russel Botman are held up as three influential types of this discourse. An eschatological logic of hope is identified as an important pattern within this discourse, also in portraying human flourishing as a fulfilled life, healing, and dignity. A third discourse portrays salvation as transformation, wherein an aesthetical interpretation plays a core role. Serene Jones, Ellen Charry, and Denise Ackermann are employed as three influential types of this discourse. A creative logic of love is inextricably wound into this discourse, also in portraying human flourishing as grace, happiness, and blessing. Together, these three logics function within triadic form in order to respond to the questions and challenges of the day. Messianic Jews, by historical definition, are Jesus-believing Jews who embrace Jewish identity and Jewish communal life as a matter of covenant responsibility (see n. 113). The twentieth century Messianic movement arose out of a milieu in which "Hebrew Christians" viewed their Jewishness primarily as a matter of ethnicity. Pioneer "Messi­ anic Jews" (such as Joseph Rabinowitz, Mark Levy, and Paul Levertoff) rejected this orientation and maintained that their Jewishness was primarily a matter of covenant faithfulness. They argued that Messianic synagogues needed to be established so that Jesus-believing Jews could live out their covenant obligations in a Jewish community context.     Palm er Byang Kato: A Theological Reappraisal 3 Byang Kato: A Theological Reappraisal Timothy Palmer The late Byang Kato is a Nigerian theologian who died at a yoWlg age about 30 years ago. In the past two or three decades, he has been praised by some and castigated by others. This paper attempts a reappraisal of his theology. Often Kato is stereotyped as an extremist in terms of African theology. Prof. K wame Bediako is one who devoted much attention to Kato in his writings. In 1983 he submitted a useful Ph.D. dissertation which compares the thought of a few early North African theologians with a few 20th century African theologians. This thesis was published in 1992 Wlder the title of "Theology and Identity." There Bediako says: Byang Henry Kato came to embody the very antithesis of the basic positions emmciated by the African theologians we have studied so far. Virtually everything he wrote was intended as a reaction to, and a rebuttal of, much that went to constitute the 'African theology' of the last two decades. 1 Bediako calls Kato the "dissenting voice in modem African theology" because of his postulate of "radical discontinuity between African tradition and Christian faith." Thus Kato's legacy to African theological thought is "problematic. INTRODUCIION The first results of Western economic and political sanctions against the government of South Africa are in: Apartheid's supporters have been strengthened while those seeking reforms have been weakened. "I'he evidence of this is abundant: ' . ++ In the whites-only election last month, the ruling National Party (NP)was returned with even greater control over the Parliament than before. ++ In the election, the racially moderate Progressive Federal Party (PW) was replaced as the official opposition party in the Parliament by the pro-apartheid Conservative Party (CP). This means that for the first time since the institutionalization of apartheid in 1948, the Pretoria government will be criticized in 'the Parliament not for moving too slowly to abolish apartheid, but for moving too quickly. ++ U.S. influence in Pretoria has been reduced, as the South African government has rejected what it views as unacceptable foreign interference in its internal affairs. ++ Economic sanctions have not damaged the South African economy severely. Most South African producers have found ' new markets for their products. Further, sanctions have caused a short-term stimulus, as the economy moves to create its own substitutes for former imports. ++ To the extent that the effects of sanctions have been felt in South Africa, they have been felt by blacks--precisely the people they were supposed to help. ++ Disinvestment by U.S. corporations doing business in South Africa also has set back the anti-apartheid campaign.
