Anne-Marie Korte Support Supervisor: Dr. Mark Johnson Approved by: Utrecht, The Netherlands 2015 2 Abstract Contemporary developments within the current global self-care regime have increased the potential of many individuals to control their own bodies, and to have their bodies surveilled by others (Shilling, 2003). The body is understood as a project that needs to be “worked at and accomplished as part of an individual’s self-identity” (Shilling, 2003:4) in this time of ‘high modernity’ (Giddens, 1991). The project of cosmetic surgery is one example of how modern individuals attribute significance both to their bodies and the way their bodies look. In a South Korean context, the cosmetic surgery scene is especially interesting to examine in the light of the uniquely Korean practice of giving cosmetic surgery as a gift, especially to daughters. Ironically, the body has to remain unaltered from how it has been received at birth according to the Neo-Confucian tradition, which continues to form the ideological base of contemporary Korean society. Moreover, this tradition teaches that inward goodness does not depend upon one’s outer appearance, something that is quite opposite to “popular physiognomic assumptions that the body, especially the face, is a reflection of the self” (Featherstone, 2010:195). -

Through an analysis of official documentation and multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork, this paper aims to introduce the current revitalization of ancient Confucian schools and rites, and the boom in children’s decorum camps and other Confucian-related educational programs on the Korean peninsula. Examining some of the schedules and curriculums, the textbooks studied, modernized rituals, and the agendas of the Ministry of Culture, the Confucian Association, and the New Religious Movement that lead the reforms, I deliberate upon possible reasons for this trend taking place at this particular time, contemplate the attempts to rebrand Confucianism as culture for better marketing, and point out some of the curious tensions and ironies this resurgence entails. -

Goyette, External Member, Sociology © Copyright 2014 by Byung Kwan Chae All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a sociological exploration of Korean Protestant immigrant churches in the United States and the influence of Confucian traditions on them. Neo- Confucianism was accepted as the state ideology in Korea in the late fourteenth century, and its influences are still strong in Koreans’ expressions of thought and worldviews, and Korean immigrants in the United States are no exception. Confucian elements are observed not only in Korean Protestant churches in Korea but also Korean immigrant churches in the United States. Thus, it can be said that Korean immigrant churches have the characteristics of a transnational religious institution. Transnationally, Confucian characteristics affect Korean churches. Further, Confucian traditions are integral to a collective consciousness for Korean immigrants, and thus their relationships and manners, based on Confucian traditions and teachings, enable them to maintain and reinforce their social solidarity. Moreover, such Confucian teachings and cultural mores are inculcated in most Koreans’ habitus. As social agents, church members use symbolic capital, such as age and Confucian manners, to gain higher status in the church. In particular, age can be considered generational capital that determines and legitimizes church members’ positions. -

Christian Spiritual Direction in the Confucian Culture: a Korean Perspective
Christian Spiritual Direction in the Confucian Culture: A Korean Perspective KangHack Lee Korean Protestant churches have grown enormously since the missionaries arrived at the end of the nineteenth century. Today, however, many Korean Protestants feel this growth is problematic. The churches have tended to follow a capitalistic model in development, looking at numbers of parish- ioners, showing competitive attitudes to other churches, and continuously trying to expand their facilities. The churches have also focused on external spiritual practices, such as worship, Bible studies, quiet time, verbal pray- ers, and conferences, which do not always fully meet their deep spiritual thirst or desire to experience an intimate relationship with God. What is lacking is a sense of inner spiritual search and personal development. That is why many Korean Protestant pastors knock on the doors of Catholic retreat centers in Korea, in Europe, and in the United States. From my ex- perience of spiritual direction in the United States, I have come to believe that spiritual direction is a precious spiritual practice that can help Korean Protestants transform their spiritual lives. Korean expressions of experiences and attitudes about relationship are very different from Western Christians. -

Kushner Senior Thesis Course No.: EAST 399 Department: East Asian Studies Thesis Advisor: Prof. Hank Glassman Date: February, 2013 Kushner 2 Abstract This thesis examines to what extent Confucianism is still apparent in modern Korea by comparing the 12th century work Family Rituals with the modern Korean drama A Gentleman’s Dignity. Korea has been modernizing rapidly in the past several decades and many scholars are of the opinion that traditional Confucianism and Western modernization are not compatible. Modern life surely presents many Koreans with apparent conflicts between traditional values and modern ones (especially as represented in free-market capitalism with its emphasis on the individual). In this thesis, however, it is argued that, although other factors may at times outweigh the need to act in an ethical fashion, Confucianism is still a major factor shaping modern life in Korea. Aspects of Geert Hofstede’s theories concerning power distance, individualism, and masculinity are used to support the arguments made. Serious conflicts are arising among Korean families because of Confucianism teachings that filial piety is the highest virtue of all ethical teachings and that ancestor worship is the continuation of filial piety to the dead parents. This issue creates a rigorous religious controversy for Korean Christians and places obstacles in the path of evangelism in Korean society. Chapter one reveals the research orientation which gives general information on how to approach and develop this issue. I approach this issue historically, theologically, practically, and/or biblically. I adopt fundamental practical theology as the main research positioning, which was suggested by Don Browning. I also make use of seven movements proposed by J C Müller in order to present the literary research and six fundamental steps proposed by Lewis and Demarest only for the theological foundation in chapter three. Chapter two reveals the effect of Confucian ancestor worship has on Asian countries and Christians, specifically in China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea, which are under the influence of Confucianism, and how Confucian ancestor worship hinders people from receiving and following Jesus Christ and a common barrier to evangelism in these Eastern Asian countries. -
Korean As a Transitional Literacy: Language Education, Curricularization, and the Vernacular-Cosmopolitan Interface in Early Modern Korea, 1895-1925
KOREAN AS A TRANSITIONAL LITERACY: LANGUAGE EDUCATION, CURRICULARIZATION, AND THE VERNACULAR-COSMOPOLITAN INTERFACE IN EARLY MODERN KOREA, 1895-1925 by DANIEL OLIVER PIEPER A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2017 © Daniel Oliver Pieper Abstract This study argues that language and literacy during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1895-1925) were formed through several interactive processes, including the development of “modern” literature and writing styles, processes of translation, dictionary compilation, and the circulation and functioning of language ideologies and discourses on linguistic modernity. Because Japanese engaged with the above processes vis-à-vis Western languages before Korean, Korean intellectuals found in the Japanese language a ready-made model for reform and modernization. Western notions of linguistic modernity—what modern language and literature “ought to be”—as well as the inundation of Korean with Japanese terms due to Korea’s late engagement with dictionary compilation and translation resulted in a Korean language that increasingly came to resemble Japanese. This facilitated the shift to higher Japanese literacy when combined with a colonial curriculum aimed at truncated Korean literacy and expansive Japanese. The convergence of the above processes with the political will engendered in education policy during a period of instability and flux in the orthographical development of Korean from that encoded in Literary Sinitic (hanmun) to Sino-Korean Mixed Script (kukhanmun) combined to lay the foundations for a shift from semi-literacy in Korean to literacy in Japanese, with Korean acting as a transitional literacy, and the sinograph (hancha) functioning as a mediating agent. -
Women and Confucianism in Choson Korea
1 Introduction Michael J. Pettid and Youngmin Kim This volume explores the relationship between Confucianism and women in mid- to late Chosŏn Korea from a wide range of perspectives, from social history through literature and political thought to intellectual his- tory.1 For those interested in Korean intellectual and cultural history, the Chosŏn dynasty marks the ascendancy of Neo-Confucianism as the dominant system of social governance. Indeed, Korean society underwent significant changes that affected women as well as other members of society as Neo-Confucianism became rooted in society and culture during the late Chosŏn dynasty. Despite a seeming consensus of scholarly opinion concerning the general rubric of the “Confucianization of the late Chosŏn dynasty,” the multidimensional culture milieu of late Chosŏn in general and women’s history in particular demand further investigation. Perhaps, a seemingly contradictory tendency in the field of Korean studies would suffice for demonstrating the need for such further inves- tigation. As an intellectual historian noted, one may find oneself trapped in inconsistency when one sees the fact that scholars in women’s history often emphasize the continuation of “Confucianization” in late Chosŏn while those in history of Korean Confucianism take note of new trends such as the so-called sirhak (substantive learning) movement in the same period of the Chosŏn dynasty. Indeed, as the ever-deepening “Confucian- ization” was an important feature of late Chosŏn society, so too was the rise of various new trends of thought and culture. How can we account for this kind of apparent inconsistency?
