Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, 2004 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Zoology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) February 2008 Chiara Piroddi, 2007 Abstract In the northeastern Ionian Sea, two populations of dolphins, the short- beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), have been studied since 1993 by the Tethys Research Institute, Italy. Results show a low density of bottlenose dolphins, and a rapid decline in common dolphin numbers and encounter rates. I constructed an ecosystem model using Ecopath with Ecosim for the northeastern Ionian Sea to explain the two different abundance trends of these species of dolphins, and the trophic interactions with their prey and with the fisheries. The Ecopath model was built for the year 1964, adding data on biomass, P/B, Q/B and diet for each functional group of the ecosystem, fisheries landings and discards. Ecosim was used to generate simulated trajectories to fit with the ‘observed’ trends (e.g., biomass, bycatch, CPUE and catches) for the most important groups of the ecosystem. The results of the fitting underline a clear decline of common dolphins caused by reduced prey availability. In particular, sardine and anchovy stocks, the main prey of common dolphins, have decreased sharply since the late 1970s due to intensive fishing pressure in the area until the end of 1990s. -

Accepted 15 April, 2010 The examination of the gills of 960 fishes belonging to four species: Diplodus annularis, Pagellus erythrinus, Lithognatus mormyrus and Mullus barbatus collected from the Gulf of Annaba, enabled us to identify 13 species of parasitic copepods: Caligus ligusticus, Caligus diaphanus, Clavellotis sp, Clavellotis sargi, Clavellotis pagri, Clavellotis strumosa, Lernaeolophus sultanus, Hatschekia pagellibogneravei, Hatschekia sp, Hatschekia mulli, Sparidicola lithognathi, Neobrachiella exigua and Alella macrotrachelus. The distribution of copepods identified, varies from one host species to another and one season to another. P. erythrinus and L. mormyrus present the important number of copepods species. However, the winter presents the highest parasitic diversity (13). Furthermore, the majority of oixenous species are counted. The rates of most values are recorded in summer (33%) and spring (25%). It is also, D. annularis which shelters more of the 2/3 population of copepods collected. The copepod H. pagellibogneravei is the most abundant. The evaluation of parasitic indices shows that, it is during the summer and spring that the maximum values are recorded. -

For this purpose we collected studies that performed up to 2017 regarding the growth of species belonging to the Diplodus genus. Data were gathered from sources like Web of Science (webofknowledge.com), Scopus (scopus.com), Google Scholar (scholar.google.com), Researchgate (researchgate.com) and Academia (academia.edu). 79 datasets from 52 different studies belongs to 10 species were com- piled. Reviewed studies were published between 1982 - 2017 and were performed in 26 different regions. It was determined that the most frequently studied species was D. vulgaris (n=23). Taxonomy and Life History of the Zebra Seabream, Diplodus Cervinus (Perciformes: Sparidae), in Southern Angola
TAXONOMY AND LIFE HISTORY OF THE ZEBRA SEABREAM, DIPLODUS CERVINUS (PERCIFORMES: SPARIDAE), IN SOUTHERN ANGOLA A thesis submitted in the fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE of RHODES UNVERSITY by Alexander Claus Winkler June 2013 ABSTRACT The zebra sea bream, Diplodus cervinus (Sparidae) is an inshore fish comprised of two boreal subspecies from the Gulf of Oman and the Mediterranean / north eastern Atlantic and one austral subspecies from South Africa and southern Angola. The assumption of a single austral subspecies has, however, been questioned due to mounting molecular and morphological evidence suggesting that the cool Benguela current is a vicariant barrier that has separated many synonymous inshore fish species between South Africa and southern Angola. The aims of this thesis are to conduct a comparative morphological analysis of Diplodus cervinus in southern Angola and South Africa in order to classify the southern Angolan population and then to conduct a life history assessment to assess the life history impact of allopatry on this species between the two regions. Results of the morphological findings of the present study (ANOSIM, p < 0.05, Rmeristic = 0.42) and (Rmorphometric = 0.30) along with a concurrent molecular study (FST = 0.4 – 0.6), identified significant divergence between specimens from South Africa (n = 25) and southern Angola (n = 37) and supported stock separation and possibly sub-speciation, depending on the classification criteria utilised. While samples from the two boreal subspecies were not available for the comparative morphological or molecular analysis, comparisons of the colouration patterns between the three subspecies, suggested similarity between the southern Angola and the northern Atlantic / Mediterranean populations.
