Such dialogues often foreshadow the events to follow: the events of the Crucifixion.

  • CHRISTMAS Christmas with Naxos
CATALOGUE 2018 CHRISTMAS Christmas with Naxos Christmas is one of the most richly celebrated seasons around the world. While its focus rests on just a few days of the year, the wealth of music that has been written to mark its spirit and story is astonishingly plentiful and varied. Musicians continue to be inspired by the message of Christmas: in the following pages you will find examples of contemporary choral works by British composers John Tavener, James MacMillan and Sasha Johnson Manning alongside the established masterpieces of composers such as J. S. Bach, Handel and Berlioz. The Christmas story has also been recorded in opera, ballet and instrumental music, in a range of expression that runs from piety to jollity. Easy-listening compilations are well represented in the listings, including regional collections and the gamut of carols that are annual favourites, heard either in the splendour of Europe's historic cathedrals or in the local community. We hope our catalogue will serve you with music that is both comfortingly familiar and refreshingly novel. May you spend a very happy Christmas with Naxos. • A Very 2020 Christmas!
December 10, 2020 Dear Friend, A Very 2020 Christmas! Remember all the back to March? Less than nine months ago when life was normal? We were told, at least in Delaware, that we had to shut down for a couple of weeks, maybe as many as four, just to break the cycle of this new strain of virus that was spreading through the country. Four turned into eight and then the summer and then the fall and now the winter and it looks like through next June at the earliest. Four weeks turned into sixteen months — and that's the best-case scenario! Yesterday, the Episcopal Bishop of Delaware, in response to the governor's stay-at-home order, issued this directive: To this end, in-person public worship in the Episcopal Church in Delaware is suspended immediately and until further notice. Weddings and funerals already planned should be postponed. Online worship remains strongly and energetically encouraged, and ministers may gather in churches, following all public health protocols, for the purpose of recording and/or broadcasting services. I ask that teams be kept to the absolute minimum necessary to offer the service. It's a dramatic and drastic step and one that will be replicated by many denominations in Delaware and surrounding states, including New Jersey. The Stated Clerk of the PCUSA has also issued a plea for churches to continue virtual worship services and not gather in person. None of this leads to a very merry Christmas — at least not one of any memory. How can it be Christmas without the festooned, candlelit sanctuary with choirs and carols

  • Lully Lullay
Lully Lullay Coventry, an English city of 250,00 in the West Midlands, was home to significant industrial power when World War II began, a line of industries Hitler wouldn’t and didn’t miss. When the Battle of Britain began, a specific Coventry blitz started immediately and didn’t end for three long months--198 tons of bombs killed 176 people and injured almost 700. But the worst was to come. On November 14, 1940, 515 Nazi bombers unloaded on Coventry’s industrial region, leaving the city in ruins. Its own air defenses fired 67 hundred rounds, but brought down only one bomber. It was a rout. At 8:00 that night, St. Michael’s Cathedral, a fourteenth-century church, was hit and burned, destroyed like so much else as a city turned to ruin. In the skeletal hulk of that Cathedral, the BBC recorded an ancient hymn that had originated in Coventry in the 16th century, part of a series of morality plays, the only such hymn to survive. The BBC’s Christmas program that night was broadcast from the heart of Britain’s “darkest hour,” and because it was, people remembered that ancient hymn because they could not forget it. Today, that hymn is called “The Coventry Carol,” and it’s unlikely that any of you who are listening to these words would find it unfamiliar. The story of that ancient hymn is told in its setting, a Christmas story whose shuddering reality is easier not to remember. The old story goes that after the birth of Jesus, King Herod, determined to hold on to his own kingdom, ordered the immediate execution of every living male child under three years old.

  • While I Do Love This Carol, It Certainly Can't Be Said That It Fits the Stereotypical Cheery Christmas Carol Template
What on earth is going on with the mournfulness and killing of children in “Coventry Carol”? While I do love this carol, it certainly can't be said that it fits the stereotypical cheery Christmas carol template. The haunting lullaby leads us to a horrible scenario: Herod the King commanding all young children to be killed. This story occurs in only one of the Gospels, the book of Matthew. The Magi, or Wise Men, have come from the East, led by the star that shows them the way to where a new King has been born. But they don't know exactly where to go once they reach Judea, so they visit Jerusalem to inquire of Herod, who has been put in charge of the area by the Romans. “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.” and calls in the scribes and priests to demand where the Messiah is to be born. They quote Micah 5:2 which names Bethlehem as the place of the birth. Herod, thinking he's being crafty, asks the Magi to come back and tell him where the new king is, “so that I may come and worship him also,” but they are warned in a dream and don't go back to Jerusalem after their visit to Bethlehem. Enraged, Herod commands that all male children under the age of two in Bethlehem be killed so that he can be sure to eliminate the royal child. But Joseph and Mary have taken the Christ child to Egypt and so escape Herod's wrath.
