It started, EXECUTIVE EDITOR as all such things should, in Whitechapel. It was the opening day of the second Jack the Adam Wood Ripper Conference, held in Norwich following a hugely successful debut two years earlier in EDITORS Ipswich, and I had somehow found myself roped into the ‘entertainment’ for that evening by Gareth Williams BBC Producer Andy Aliffe, a performance of a Ripper-themed comedy radio play. Also in the Eduardo Zinna ‘cast’ were esteemed researcher (and professional actor) Keith Skinner, Sherlockian Nick Utechin and author Paul Begg. Andy was performing the sound effects and TV personality EDITOR-AT-LARGE and Ripperologist Jeremy Beadle introduced the play. Jonathan Menges I’d arranged to meet Paul in the East End that afternoon in order to go over our ‘lines’, and then REVIEWS EDITOR to catch the train together out of Liverpool Street to Norwich. Joining us on that journey was the Paul Begg much-missed Ripper bibliophile, Ross Strachan (if you weren’t around in those days, Google him). The three of us spent an hour or two in The City Darts, former Princess Alice and now Culpeper, COLUMNISTS before heading up to The Ten Bells. And that’s where the trouble began.     Jack the Ripper: The Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society Michael Plater Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 18 July 2018 Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines late nineteenth-century public and media representations of the infamous “Jack the Ripper” murders of 1888. Focusing on two of the most popular theories of the day – Jack as exotic “alien” foreigner and Jack as divided British “gentleman” – it contends that these representations drew upon a series of emergent social and cultural anxieties in relation to notions of the “self” and the “other.” Examining the widespread contention that “no Englishman” could have committed the crimes, it explores late-Victorian conceptions of Englishness and documents the way in which the Ripper crimes represented a threat to these dominant notions of British identity and masculinity. In doing so, it argues that late-Victorian fears of the external, foreign “other” ultimately masked deeper anxieties relating to the hidden, unconscious, instinctual self and the “other within.” Moreover, it reveals how these psychological concerns were connected to emergent social anxieties regarding degeneration, atavism and the “beast in man.” As such, it evaluates the wider psychological and sociological impact of the case, arguing that the crimes revealed the deep sense of fracture, duality and instability that lay beneath the surface of late-Victorian English life, undermining and challenging dominant notions of progress, civilisation and social advancement. Situating the Ripper narrative within a broader framework of late-nineteenth century cultural uncertainty and crisis, it therefore argues that the crimes (and, more specifically, populist perceptions of these crimes) represented a key defining moment in British history, serving to condense and consolidate a whole series of late-Victorian fears in relation to selfhood and identity.

    A REVIEW OF BRUCE ROBINSON'S BOOK AND THE MAYBRICK CONNECTION By Chris Jones (author of the Maybrick A to Z) If you haven't read Bruce Robinson's recent book on Jack the Ripper and the alleged connection to Michael Maybrick, then you must. It is long and detailed, though you maybe shocked by some of his language; for example, he refers to the Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, as the 'boss c--t of his class.'1 Robinson makes a strong case that there was a Masonic link to the murders and that the Establishment were keen to cover up certain incidents; for example, the truncated manner in which the coroner's inquest into the death of Mary Kelly was conducted. Robinson also makes a strong case that many of the letters sent to the police may have come from the serial killer himself. As well as the canonical murders, he also examines some less well known events which he argues are linked to the Ripper killings; for example, the 'Whitehall Mystery' and the discovery of the human headless, limbless torso on the building site that was to become New Scotland Yard. Some of the most important sections of Robinson's book deal with the relationship between Michael Maybrick and his brother James, and with James's wife, Florence. Three of his core arguments are that Michael 'fingered' James to be Jack the Ripper and (with the help of others) had him murdered and finally, with the help of high-ranking Masonic figures, had Florence blamed for the crime as she had 'discovered the truth of a terrible secret.'2 Although many of Robinson's arguments are supported by research, some of the important assertions he makes concerning the Maybricks, lack evidence and are therefore open to question.

    Unique crime collection giving insight into Whitechapel murders to be made public for the first time The unique personal archive of the detective who led the hunt for Jack the Ripper - including a book in which he names the infamous Whitechapel murderer - will be made public for the first time after being given into the care of an independent museum. The private collection of Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector Donald Sutherland Swanson has been entrusted to the National Emergency Services Museum (NESM) in Sheffield by the former detective's family. The treasure trove lay undiscovered for decades until Swanson's descendants discovered an enormous collection of over 150 individual objects; paperwork, photographs, letters, drawings and personal belongings. Among them was what became known as 'the Swanson marginalia'; a book, annotated by Swanson, in which he names the person he believed to be the infamous killer, Jack the Ripper. The marginalia is thought to be a unique artefact revealing unknown details of the case as well as theories and notes on what evidence the Metropolitan Police had gathered - all from the pen of the inspector charged with solving the case. The marginalia, along with other items from the collection, will form part of a new exhibition, Daring Detectives & Dastardly Deeds, which will be revealed to visitors when the museum reopens on Wednesday 19 May. The exhibition, housed within NESM's original Victorian cells, explores the intriguing history of 19th crime and punishment from the bobby on the beat to the emerging science of forensics. The Swanson collection is thought to be one of the most detailed and significant of its kind.
