  • Invisible Mathematics in Italo Calvinoss Le
Invisible Mathematics in Italo Calvino’s Le città invisibili Ileana Moreno-Viqueira Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Ileana Moreno-Viqueira All rights reserved ABSTRACT Invisible Mathematics in Italo Calvino’s Le città invisibili Ileana Moreno-Viqueira This dissertation examines the use of mathematical concepts as an essential structural and thematic element in Italo Calvino’s Le città invisibili. The author‘s conception of literature as a combinatorial art, intrinsically mathematical itself, is the point of departure. Focal to the study is Calvino’s interest in that which is an essential part of the combinatorial game and the key to Gödel Incompleteness Theory, namely, the elements of surprise and the unexpected - the exceptions to the rule. Other critical approaches to Calvino’s work, like semiotic, structuralism and scientific are interrelated to Mathematics, but what this study proposes is a strictly mathematical approach to complement that which has already been pointed out. A mathematical perspective based on an understanding of Mathematics as more than just numbers encompasses the whole analysis. Mathematics is given its proper place as a humanistic discipline. It is an interdisciplinary proposal of literature and science, pertinent to Calvino’s writing. The purpose is to unveil a “hidden math” which from the perspective of this study is an intrinsic tool in Calvino’s writing process of Città. As a versatile writer, Calvino manages to use mathematics in such subtle ways that it may not be perceptible at first sight.

MASTER AND PUPIL PETER SELZ Marco Sassone (born in Campi Bisenzio, Tuscany, in 1942) and Silvio Loffredo had fathers who were painters and gave them their initial instruction. When Sassone was 25 years old, he decided Angeles and coming to live and work in San Francisco in the early 1980s. He travels back to Italy every year to paint spar- 2000), there is also a tragic aspect to his work. Done in pastel or oil, these anonymous portrait heads are based on black and white drawings, which the painter made from encounters with street people in San Francisco. He would listened to the stories of the downtrodden and home- less and sketch their faces. These are portrayals of isolated men and women with piercing eyes and solemn, thoughtful and troubled expressions. The series had its beginnings in 1990 with his suite of paintings of the Homeless, entitled Home on the Streets, which in turn, goes back to the compelling painting, Aftermath (1968), that was prompted by the great wreckage in Florence the street. He is scavenging the rubble, while another man walks slowly out of the devastated area — and out of the painting. It was at that time that the artist, who had studied with Loffredo at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence traveled to and settled in California. Homelessness, a condition which we have come to know too well in American cities, does not exist in European cities, except in wartime. The Italian painter, therefore, was astounded with what he encountered in San Francisco. He found the homeless a compelling subject for very powerful paintings, in which a fascinating effect is achieved by the contrast of the misery of the motif and the eloquence of the vigorous brushwork.

  • ITALIAN BOOKSHELF Edited by Dino S. Cervigni and Anne Tordi
ITALIAN BOOKSHELF Edited by Dino S. Cervigni and Anne Tordi GENERAL & MISCELLANEOUS STUDIES The Bread and the Rose: A Trilingual Anthology of Neapolitan Poetry from the 16th Century to the Present. Ed. Achille Serrao and Luigi Bonaffini. Mineola, NY: Legas, 2005. The ninth volume in a series edited by Gaetano Cipolla of St. John’s University in the “Italian Poetry in Translation” series by Legas, The Bread and the Rose is a companion to volume 5 of the series, Serrao’s Cantalesia: Poems in the Neapolitan Dialect, translated by Bonaffini. The series is an important intellectual, cultural and editorial project — now twenty years strong — making available scholarship on Dante and the “minor” traditions of Molise, Padova, and dialect poetry. The Bread and the Rose is an ambitious tri-lingual work, covering five centuries of Neapolitan poetry chronologically and thematically with the original and the English translations facing each other on the same page and the Italian translation at the foot of the page. The reader can therefore either enjoy the poems on the own merits or spend some pleasurable time navigating the three linguistic registers while reflecting on all sorts of philological, etymological and cultural intricacies. Serrao’s useful introduction raises a number of pertinent questions while making no claim to being exhaustive. (For that, Serrao recommends De Mura’s Poeti napoletani dal Seicento a oggi, Napoli, Marotta Editore, 1977), where one can find “absolutely every poet born in Campania” (15). Serrao argues that this volume will forgo exhaustiveness in favor of the “exemplarity of the authors presented and in the concomitant certainty of their (esthetic) capacity to absorb the work of those excluded” (emphasis in the original).

The last five months have been an incredible education for all of us. We have the most incredible City, bar none, and yet , as you know, we have one of the worse homeless cri sis in the nation. We have some of the most incredible human beings who give so unselfishly of themselves to help the poor and yet we remain unable to take the poor off of the streets and into housing. We have the most lauded and successful plans in the nation and yet again, we lead the nation in people without homes. These are stark real ities, and this Ten Year Planning Council faced them head on. The plan we present to you is a no non-sense plan, " lets house people now" plan, that I firmly believe is the key that will unlock the door to the homes our people so desperately need. The focus of the plan is permanent supportive housing for the 3000 or so chronically homeless, out of the 15,000 general homeless populations. When you effect the 3000 chronically homeless, indeed, you dramatically effect the general homeless population.
