  • Master and Pupil Peter Selz
MASTER AND PUPIL PETER SELZ Marco Sassone (born in Campi Bisenzio, Tuscany, in 1942) and Silvio Loffredo had fathers who were painters and gave them their initial instruction. When Sassone was 25 years old, he decided Angeles and coming to live and work in San Francisco in the early 1980s. He travels back to Italy every year to paint spar- 2000), there is also a tragic aspect to his work. Done in pastel or oil, these anonymous portrait heads are based on black and white drawings, which the painter made from encounters with street people in San Francisco. He would listened to the stories of the downtrodden and home- less and sketch their faces. These are portrayals of isolated men and women with piercing eyes and solemn, thoughtful and troubled expressions. The series had its beginnings in 1990 with his suite of paintings of the Homeless, entitled Home on the Streets, which in turn, goes back to the compelling painting, Aftermath (1968), that was prompted by the great wreckage in Florence the street. He is scavenging the rubble, while another man walks slowly out of the devastated area — and out of the painting. It was at that time that the artist, who had studied with Loffredo at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence traveled to and settled in California. Homelessness, a condition which we have come to know too well in American cities, does not exist in European cities, except in wartime. The Italian painter, therefore, was astounded with what he encountered in San Francisco. He found the homeless a compelling subject for very powerful paintings, in which a fascinating effect is achieved by the contrast of the misery of the motif and the eloquence of the vigorous brushwork.

Index .......................................................................................... 74 The San Francisco Plan to Abolish Chronic Homelessness 1 Table of Contents Dear Mayor Newsom, On behalf of the members of the Ten Year Council, I submit this report entitled "San Francisco's Ten Year Plan" to end chronic homelessness. The last five months have been an incredible education for all of us. We have the most incredible City, bar none, and yet , as you know, we have one of the worse homeless cri sis in the nation. We have some of the most incredible human beings who give so unselfishly of themselves to help the poor and yet we remain unable to take the poor off of the streets and into housing. We have the most lauded and successful plans in the nation and yet again, we lead the nation in people without homes. These are stark real ities, and this Ten Year Planning Council faced them head on. The plan we present to you is a no non-sense plan, " lets house people now" plan, that I firmly believe is the key that will unlock the door to the homes our people so desperately need. The focus of the plan is permanent supportive housing for the 3000 or so chronically homeless, out of the 15,000 general homeless populations. When you effect the 3000 chronically homeless, indeed, you dramatically effect the general homeless population.

  • Marco Sassone Janet Dominik
MARCO SASSONE JANET DOMINIK During the last several decades the art world has seen dramatic changes in the styles of art. The preeminence of abstract expressionism and other nonobjective styles — the many «isms» for Pop garde brought negative criticism. However, representational art never lost its popular audience, and today it is being viewed by patrons and critics alike with renewed appreciation. Some artists who have not painted in a repre- sentational manner for many years are returning to it. Some, a select few, have never abandoned it. One such artist is Marco Sassone, an artist who developed his own personal, expressive vision - ing it to the full power and maturity that is seen in his works today, works rich in coloration and not according to what’s fashionable at the time in the art world» - ing what he calls a «realist expressionist.» He is a gestural painter, an artist who becomes totally absorbed in the act of painting. For him, it is the freedom of execution that is more important than being categorized in any particular style or mode. Nevertheless, no artist exists in a vacuum, perspective. Sassone is truly a cosmopolitan artist. He has lived in the United States for twenty years, nearly half his lifetime, yet he returns annually to Italy, the land of his birth. There he feels re- generated. The he renews his ties to the rich artistic and cultural traditions of Florence, city of the Renaissance. He was born near there, in the village of Campi Bisenzio on 27 of July 1942. His father, Nicola Sassone, was an architectural draftsman by profession and a singer, actor, writer and painter by avocation.
