Glossary of Carpet and Rug Terms
Glossary of Carpet and Rug Terms 100% Transfer - The full coverage of the carpet floor adhesive into the carpet backing, including the recesses of the carpet back, while maintaining full coverage of the floor. Absorbent Pad (or Bonnet) Cleaning - A cleaning process using a minimal amount of water, where detergent solutions are sprayed onto either vacuumed carpet, or a cotton pad, and a rotary cleaning machine is used to buff the carpet, and the soil is transferred from the carpet to the buff pad, which is changed or cleaned as it becomes soiled. Acrylic/Modacrylic - A synthetic fiber introduced in the late 1940's, and carpet in the late 1950's, it disappeared from the market in the late 1980's due to the superior performance of other synthetics. Acrylics were reintroduced in 1990 in Berber styling to take advantage of their wool-like appearance. Modacrylic is a modified acrylic. While used alone in bath or scatter rugs, in carpeting it's usually blended with an acrylic. Acrylics are known for their dyeability, wearability, resistance to staining, color retention and resistance to abrasion. They're non-allergenic, mildew proof and moth proof. Adhesive - A substance that dries to a film capable of holding materials together by surface attachment. Anchor Coat - A latex or adhesive coating applied to the back of tufted carpet, to lock the tufts and prevent them from being pulled out under normal circumstances. Antimicrobial - A chemical treatment added to carpet to reduce the growth of common bacteria, fungi, yeast, mold and mildew. Antistatic - A carpet's ability to dissipate an electrostatic charge before it reaches a level that a person can feel. -
Nigel Lendon, a Tournament of Shadows: Alighiero Boetti, the Myth of Influence, and a Contemporary Orientalism
Nigel Lendon, A tournament of shadows: Alighiero Boetti, the myth of influence, and a contemporary orientalism NIGEL LENDON A tournament of shadows: Alighiero Boetti, the myth of influence, and a contemporary orientalism ABSTRACT This paper examines the evolution of the historical and theoretical literature that has developed about the work of the avant-garde Italian artist Alighiero Boetti produced in Afghanistan from 1971 until 1994. Characterised by a set of interrelated cultural and historical fictions, I propose that this collective narrative has evolved to constitute a contemporary orientalist mythology. This is particularly evident in the literature following his death in 1994, and most recently in anticipation of his retrospective exhibitions in the Museo Reina Sofia, Tate Modern, and the Museum of Modern Art in 2011–12. Prior to his death, the literature on Boetti primarily took the form of catalogue essays, journal articles and biographies. These drew heavily on a small number of interviews conducted with the artist, plus accounts and memoirs given by his wives, partners, and curatorial collaborators. Since his death, the literature has further proliferated, and today a greater emphasis is placed on a growing number of secondary authorities. Recent monographs, catalogue essays, and auction house texts draw heavily on the anecdotal accounts of his agents and facilitators, as well as his employees and archivists. In exploring what I describe as the mythologies informing the contemporary reception of his work, I examine the claims of his influence over the distinctive indigenous genre of Afghan narrative carpets which were produced both within Afghanistan as well as by diasporic Afghans in Iran and Pakistan in the years following the 1979 Soviet invasion until the present. -

Traditionally, the pile woven carpets made by Afghan tribal groups included symbols more often associated with life and faith than death and war. However, beginning with the Soviet Invasion of 1979, weavers have incorporated imagery that is at once disturbing and defiant. The events surrounding the period of Taliban rule and American Occupation have, similarly, provided fodder for woven imaginations. This exhibition, co-curated by Michele Hardy and Robert Fyke, features carpets from a number of private collections as well as the Jean and Marie Erikson Collection, all brought together for the first time in Canada. The earliest rugs to be called "war rugs" appeared following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. According to the often speculative literature on the subject, war carpets are thought to have originated near Herat in northwest Afghanistan. Likely they were woven by members of tribal groups with long traditions of carpet weaving. Many war rugs are attributed to the Baluch, for example, an ethnically diverse nomadic group who occupy a vast region on either side of the Afghan-Iran border. -

Beginning in 1993, the international community came together to develop the medical systems for an international space station. Initially, this collaboration was bilateral in support of the Shuttle / Mir Space Station (Phase 1). However, the framework that was established to serve as the medical authority structure provided a foundation for the multilateral boards and panel, which were codified in the memoranda of understanding. The Multilateral Medical Policy Board, the Multilateral Space Medicine Board and the Multilateral Medical Operations Panel were developed in a collegial and mutually- beneficial environment by the men and women of the space agenicies of Canada, Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States. -
Afghan War Rugs
The Modern Art of Central Asia The Modern Art of Central Asia August 21 - October 16, Organized and curated by Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins, Ph.D. PREFACE Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia is an important international exhibition that brings to the United States, for the first time, one of the most distinct collections of Afghan war rugs in the world. The mostly women artists who wove the rugs abandoned their traditional nonfigurative styles to produce rich pictorial images that recount a broader story. In knotted rugs with maps, portraits of kings, khans, and military leaders, and in rugs with weapons, the weavers revolutionized an ancient craft. Purchased throughout Central Asia and in Europe, the over 40 rugs in this collection were selected for their exceptional quality, rarity, and surprising content. They represent an encounter of timeless aesthetic tradition with the violent, roiling reality of contemporary Central Asia. Wardak Province, central Afghanistan.
