(It does not include any children’s output on other commercial generalist non-terrestrial channels, such as GMTV,ABC1, Sky One.) • This output analysis examines the genre range within children’s programming and looks at how this range has changed since 2003. It is based on the BARB Children’s genre classification only and uses the BARB subgenres of Children’s Drama, Factual, Cartoons, Light entertainment/quizzes, Pre-school and Miscellaneous. • It is important to note that the BARB genre classifications have some drawbacks: – All programme output that is targeted at children is not classified as Children’s within BARB. Television is a universally popular medium that offers a myriad of choices to viewers around the world. American programs both reflect and influence the culture of the times. Two dramatic series, The Closer and Saving Grace, were presented on the same cable network and shared genre and design. Both featured female police detectives and demonstrated an acute awareness of postmodern feminism. The Closer was very successful, yet Saving Grace, was cancelled midway through the third season. A close study of plot lines and character development in the shows will elucidate their fundamental differences that serve to explain their widely disparate reception by the viewing public. When I was a boy, my dad, younger brother and I went on a bike ride down Broad Street. My dad and brother were riding on my dad’s bike, and I was behind them on my little blue Schwinn bike. Suddenly, my dad’s 10-speed bike hit a deep pothole that caused my dad to crash his bike, tossing my brother onto the pavement and throwing my dad onto the blacktop. He hit the left side of his face on the road and got a deep gash above his left eye and forehead. I remember my brother lying on his belly in the middle of the road, crying in shock and fear. When I saw the accident happen in front of me, I stopped my bike but, as a little kid, I didn’t know what to do. My dad told me later that another “biker” came out of nowhere, stopped and then rang the doorbell of someone’s house right next to the street, who in turn called 911 and got the police and EMT to come.
