The series, which premieres Sunday, April 20, 2014 (8 p.m. ET/PT, 7C), stars Eric Mabius (“Ugly Betty”), Kristin Booth (“The Kennedys”), Crystal Lowe (“Smallville”) and Geoff Gustafson (“Primeval: New World”) and is Created and Executive Produced by Martha Williamson, best known as the Executive Producer behind the mega-hit “Touched By An Angel.” Williamson and Burnett, who did a star turn on “Touched By An Angel,” will be reunited for the first time since the series. In “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” Ms. Burnett will guest star as the grandmother of irrepressible #POstable “Norman Dorman (Gustafson),” a core member of the quartet of untraditional mail detectives. “I never cease to be amazed by the depth of Martha Williamson's relationships in this business, as evidenced by her ability to invite one of the all-time Queens of Comedy, Carol Burnett, to be a special guest star on ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered,’ said Michelle Vicary, Executive Vice President, Programming, Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel. “Ms. Burnett brings love and laughter to millions of people all over the world, and she is literally one of the most sought-after, legendary entertainers of all time. The reuniting of Carol Burnett and Martha Williamson will make for an unprecedented, must-see season finale,” Vicary concluded. "Carol is an American legend who has used words to bring joy and laughter, to encourage, inspire and heal us through nearly six decades of life," said Series Creator and Executive Producer Martha Williamson. "It's my privilege to welcome my hero and mentor to the show," she added. With her signature humor and warmth, Burnett’s career-defining work on CBS’s popular comedic variety hour, “The Carol Burnett Show,” made her a television sensation, as well as earned her the distinction of being one of America’s most admired women in entertainment. Consistently ranked as one of the best television shows of all time, “The Carol Burnett Show” ran for 11 years and received 25 Emmy® Awards, making Burnett herself a multiple Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winner and leading to some of the most memorable moments in television history. In addition to her work on the small screen, which has most recently included guest appearances on “Hawaii 5-0”, “Hot in Cleveland,” “Glee” and her Emmy®-nominated role on “Law and Order: SVU,” Burnett has written three New York Times bestselling books, including her most recent one “Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story”, for which Burnett received her second Grammy® nomination for Best Spoken Word. Starting her career on “The Garry Moore Show,” Burnett simultaneously worked on Broadway, originating the role of Winifred in Once Upon A Mattress. Later Broadway credits included Moon Over Buffalo, Noises Off and Putting it Together. And Burnett is also well known for her starring role as “Miss Hannigan” in the film production of the musical Annie. A Kennedy Center Honoree, Burnett has received the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for Humor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2013, the City of Los Angeles named the intersection of Highland Ave. and Selma directly adjacent to Hollywood High School, Carol’s alma mater, Carol Burnett Square. As the third original series from Hallmark Channel, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” is a wonderful combination of romance, comedy and drama that follows the lives of a group of postal workers who transform themselves into an untraditional team of detectives to track down intended recipients of undeliverable mail. Their missions take them out of the office into an unpredictable world where redirected letters and packages can save lives, solve crimes, reunite old loves and change futures by arriving late but somehow on time. Season One will include 10 one-hour episodes, with Burnett joining the series’ other special guest stars appearing throughout the season, including Valerie Harper, Della Reese, Valerie Bertinelli and Marilu Henner. “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” is a Muse Entertainment production in association with MoonWater Productions. Executive Producers are Martha Williamson (“Touched by an Angel”), Joel S. Rice (“Cyberbully”), Michael Prupas (“The Kennedys”) and Scott Smith (“Call Me Fitz”). Harvey Kahn (“The Haunting Hour”) is the producer. Muse Distribution International holds the worldwide distribution rights. • The Musical Number and the Sitcom
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) It May Look Like a Living Room…: The Musical Number and the Sitcom By Robin Stilwell Georgetown University 1. They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139).

  • 30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Aaron: You know my work. Walk with me. I’m Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network.

  • A Textual Analysis of the Closer and Saving Grace: Feminist and Genre Theory in 21St Century Television
A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE CLOSER AND SAVING GRACE: FEMINIST AND GENRE THEORY IN 21ST CENTURY TELEVISION Lelia M. Stone, B.A., M.P.A. A Textual Analysis of The Closer and Saving Grace: Feminist and Genre Theory in 21st Century Television. Master of Arts (Radio, Television and Film), December 2013, 89 pp., references 82 titles. Television is a universally popular medium that offers a myriad of choices to viewers around the world. American programs both reflect and influence the culture of the times. Two dramatic series, The Closer and Saving Grace, were presented on the same cable network and shared genre and design. Both featured female police detectives and demonstrated an acute awareness of postmodern feminism. The Closer was very successful, yet Saving Grace, was cancelled midway through the third season. A close study of plot lines and character development in the shows will elucidate their fundamental differences that serve to explain their widely disparate reception by the viewing public. • “JESUS IS GREATER THAN ANGELS” Hebrews 1:1-14 (NLT) Based on Pastor Love Saquing’S Sermon on October 4, 2020
“JESUS IS GREATER THAN ANGELS” Hebrews 1:1-14 (NLT) Based on Pastor Love Saquing’s sermon on October 4, 2020 Through this devotion series written by Pastor Jim and Pastor Love, we invite the Brookdale family to focus on the promises of God’s Word together. We reflect on the previous Sunday’s sermon and provide thought-provoking questions to help you apply the lessons to your daily life. As we each read it from wherever God has planted us in this season, we pray that He will bring you a new sense of hope, clarity, and peace. Do you believe that angels exist? When I was a boy, my dad, younger brother and I went on a bike ride down Broad Street. My dad and brother were riding on my dad’s bike, and I was behind them on my little blue Schwinn bike. Suddenly, my dad’s 10-speed bike hit a deep pothole that caused my dad to crash his bike, tossing my brother onto the pavement and throwing my dad onto the blacktop. He hit the left side of his face on the road and got a deep gash above his left eye and forehead. I remember my brother lying on his belly in the middle of the road, crying in shock and fear. When I saw the accident happen in front of me, I stopped my bike but, as a little kid, I didn’t know what to do. My dad told me later that another “biker” came out of nowhere, stopped and then rang the doorbell of someone’s house right next to the street, who in turn called 911 and got the police and EMT to come.

  • Women in Comedy
WOMEN IN COMEDY BACKGROUND: MAKERS: Women In Comedy tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Norman Lear’s Maude to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom and building to today’s multifaceted landscape. Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of Saturday Night Live are often more famous than their male counterparts, but it didn’t start out that way. Early breakout female comics had to keep their jokes within the safe context of marriage, motherhood, and a man’s world. But they still found a way to be subversive. As Joan Rivers puts it, “I was furious about having to get married… It all comes out on stage. So that’s what I do onstage. I really tell them the truth.” Soon comedy became a vehicle for women to take on some of the most sensitive and controversial issues of the day. On television in the 1960s, entertainers like Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore illuminated the core issues of feminism with humor that was both sly and truthful. But it took a powerful male producer to bring the most provocative feminist characters onto the screen. Maude, who Lear introduced to audiences in 1971, was a feminist firebrand on her fourth husband, strong and independent with a razor sharp wit. “When Maude was on the air,” Lear tells us, “I used to get letters from the First Lady, Betty Ford…. And she always signed every letter ‘Maude’s #1 fan’.” When Maude chose to have an abortion at 47, religious groups protested, but the episode was watched by 65 million Americans.

It is impossible, however, for a work of this sort to be truly comprehensive, and a statement of the criteria used for selection would have been useful. The alphabetically arranged entries vary considerably in length and detail, and cross references are used inconsistently and are occasionally erroneous.
