ISBN 1-901795-44-6 ii Preface The Interconnector pipeline has rarely been out of the news since it was first proposed in the early 1990s. It is probably not too much of an exaggeration to say that it has transformed short term trading in north west Europe, causing companies to enter into commercial behaviour that they had not previously considered possible or, in some cases, desirable. Equally interesting were predictions (before it was built) that the project was likely to be a waste of time, followed by periodic claims that: gas was flowing in the wrong direction; that larger or smaller volumes of gas should be flowing; and that shippers on one side or the other were responding inappropriately to price signals. For a gas research programme this made the Interconnector a particularly suitable research project which fits perfectly into our work on European gas issues. -

Specifying HV/MV Transformers at Large Sites for an Optimized MV Electrical Network White Paper 258 Revision 0 by Juan Tobias Daniel Radu Philippe Dogny Jean-Luc Belletto Executive summary Generally, large industrial site designs use standard specifications of the HV/MV transformer which leads to oversizing and a higher cost of the MV primary and secondary electrical distribution system. This paper introduces the factors to consider when specifying the HV/MV transformer and raises awareness of the impact of short circuit impedance (zt) on the cost of the HV/MV transformer and the MV electrical distribution installa- tion (MV switchgear and cabling). Finally, a case study of a large date center is presented to show how a reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO) can be achieved. NOTE: this technical white paper is aimed at electrical engineers who are specifying HV/MV transformers for large industrial and data center sites. To determine joint behaviour corresponding to critical-to-quality criteria, this study uses one of the widely used joining technologies, ultrasonic metal welding (UMW), to produce tab-to-busbar joints using copper and aluminium busbars of varying thicknesses. Joints for electrical and thermal characterisation were selected based on the satisfactory mechanical strength determined from the T-peel tests. Electrical contact resistance and corresponding temperature rise at the joints were compared for different tab-to-busbar joints by passing current through the joints. The average resistance or temperature increase from the 0.3 mm Al tab was 0.6 times higher than the 0.3 mm Cu[Ni] tab, irrespective of busbar selection.
