Welcome to the relaxing world of Sauna! I am a native of Finland, where Sauna is a national institution, and I grew up taking Saunas as a weekly ritual — now I use my Sauna daily. My Finnish pride in the Sauna and my desire to represent the “true” Sauna here in America, prompted me to start my own Sauna business in 1964. • Insulating Thatched Roofs This Guidance Note Has Been Prepared and Edited by David Pickles
Energy Efficiency and Historic Buildings Insulating Thatched Roofs This guidance note has been prepared and edited by David Pickles. It forms one of a series of thirteen guidance notes covering the thermal upgrading of building elements such as roofs, walls and floors. First published by English Heritage March 2012. This edition (v1.1) published by Historic England April 2016. All images © Historic England unless otherwise stated. Illustrations drawn by Simon Revill. Our full range of guidance on energy efficiency can be found at: HistoricEngland.org.uk/energyefficiency Front cover: Thatch repairs in progress. © Philip White. Summary This guidance provides advice on the principles, risks, materials and methods for insulating thatched roofs. There are estimated to be about fifty thousand thatched buildings in England today, some of which retain thatch which is over six hundred years old. Thatching reflects strong vernacular traditions all over the country. Well-maintained thatch is a highly effective weatherproof coating as traditional deep thatched eaves will shed rainwater without the need for any down pipes or gutters. Locally grown thatch is a sustainable material, which has little impact on the environment throughout its life-cycle. It requires no chemicals to grow, can be harvested by hand or using traditional farm machinery, requires no mechanical processing and therefore has low embodied energy and can be fixed using hand tools. At the end of its life it can be composted and returned to the land. Thatch has a much greater insulating value than any other traditional roof covering. With the right choice of material and detailing, a well-maintained thatched roof will keep a building warm in winter and cool in summer and has the added advantage of being highly sound-proof.

  • Technical Summary
TM NEW CONSTRUCTION HURRICANE TECHNICAL SUMMARY 2019 FORTIFIED HOME™ Technical Requirements INTRODUCTION New Home This FORTIFIED Home™ standard helps homeowners in coastal areas strengthen their houses against hurricanes. Incorporating FORTIFIED features when repairing, rebuilding, or renovating your home will transform your house into a more resilient and durable property. The FORTIFIED features focus first on strengthening and protecting the roof because it is the home’s first line of defense against severe weather events. This includes things like sealing the roof deck to prevent wind-driven rain from getting inside and using a roof covering that is rated for the wind speeds in your area to reduce the chances it will lift up or blow off during high winds. Protecting the openings in the house, things like entry doors, windows, and especially garage doors, is also important. Creating a continuous load path by tying the roof to the walls, the wall above to the wall below, and the first floor walls to the foundation will significantly strengthen your home when Mother Nature strikes. There are three levels of FORTIFIED Home: 1. FORTIFIED Roof™ — focus is on the roof 2. FORTIFIED Silver™ — focus is on roof overhangs, opening protection, gable ends, and attached structures 3. FORTIFIED Gold™ — focus is on tying all components of the structure together For more detailed information about how to make your home stronger, safer, and more hurricane-resistant, please visit www.DisasterSafety.org/FORTIFIED. We cannot see this band of light with the naked eye, but we can feel this type of light in the form of heat. Our sun produces most of its energy output in the infrared segment of the spectrum. Infrared rays heat your body without having to heat the air in-between. This process is called conversion. The infrared is divided into 3 segments by wavelengths measured in microns: near infrared: 0.76-1.5 microns; middle infrared: 1.5-5.6 microns; and far infrared: 5.6-1000 microns. Among these segments, only far infrared penetrates organic substances such as the human body two to three inches so that the warming effect is very uniform. ARE INFRARED RAYS SAFE? Because infrared rays are part of sunlight, they are not only safe but also highly beneficial to our bodies on a cellular level.
