VOLUME 15, NUMBER 10, MAY 15th, 2007 Island Roots Festival draws hundreds A pirate theme brought interest in cay’s past
By Mirella Santillo Green Turtle Cay’s Island Roots Heritage Festival was officially opened on May 4th by Commissioner Lopez from Key West, who stated “without Green Turtle Cay, there would not be a Key West as we know it now.” The festival was created in 1977 to celebrate the first year anniversary of the sisterhood between Key West and New Ply- mouth. It was not held for 27 years but the festival has gained growing popularity since its return in 2004. It is a cultural and enter- taining event aimed at reminding people of the island’s history and of their roots. It also is intended to keep alive the ties between New Plymouth and Key West, which share a common Loyalist heritage. This year’s theme was Pirates and it is only normal that the pirate ship of the Conch Republic, (Key West) the schooner Wolf, heralded the festivities with a cannonade followed by a statement from the Admiral and First Sea Lord, Captain Finbar Gittleman, “We come not to plunder, merely to enjoy.” The Wolf’s first mate Julie “Blos- The Fourth Annual Island Roots Festival brought together Abaconians from all communities as well as many visitors from Florida som” McEnroe and the crew of the schoo- and elsewhere. email: [email protected] VOLUME 15, NUMBER 10, MAY 15th, 2007 Eight Police promoted to Sargeant Local officers advanced instead of bringing in others By Mirella Santillo In March 2007 two veterans of the Royal Police Force posted in Marsh Harbour, ASP Wayne Miller and Chief Insp. Godfrey Ferguson, received confirmation that the promotion they had been awarded the pre- vious year had become effective. ASP Wayne Miller is now Superintendent of Po- lice while Chief Inspector Godfrey Ferguson is now Assistant Superintendent of Police. “I am still the officer in charge,” explained Mr. Miller, “but Mr. Ferguson will be given more responsibilities.” That announcement was followed a few days later by the promotion of several po- licemen on Abaco. In a ceremony held on April 30th eight corporals were promoted to the rank of sergeant: Corporals Paul Johnson, Ashley Hepburn, Corrie Scott, Larry Rolle, Jennifer Rolle, Christopher Farquharson, Anton Knowles and Remy Minnis. In another ceremony later that same day nine constables were promoted to corporals. They were Officers William Smith, Jerome Ferguson, Mark Lewis, Cassidy Smith, Vernique Miller, Dominico Boyd, Christo- pher Higgs, Valentino Smith and Erika Colebrook. On April 30 several officers assigned to Abaco were promoted. Shown here is the group who were promoted to the rank of sergeant. “It was the most promotions at one time Seated are Insp. He stated that church goers need to take part in praise and worship. He and his team plan to teach church personnel how to make the church experience meaningful for all persons. Since then it has grown immensely and is doing its best to meet the demands of its parishioners. The new extension to New Vision is 4,800 square feet with three nursery rooms, eight Sunday School rooms, a conference room and Pastor Benjamin’s office. Pastor Benjamin said, “It is another vision realized in the life of the church and for the purpose it is going to be used for.
