    The concept of ‘sharing’ in Chinese social media: Origins, transformations and implications Luolin Zhao & Nicholas John Luolin Zhao, Center for Studies of Media Development, Wuhan University, China, [email protected] Nicholas John, Department of Communication and Journalism, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel [email protected] Corresponding author: Luolin Zhao Pre-print accepted version In this article we present an analysis of the concepts of fenxiang and gongxiang—the Mandarin words for ‘sharing’—in the context of Chinese social media. We do so through an interrogation of the words fenxiang and gongxiang as used by Chinese social media companies. Using the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, we created screenshots of 32 Chinese social network sites between 2000-2018 and tracked changes in the usage of fenxiang and gongxiang over time. The Mandarin translations in some ways operate like the English word, ‘sharing’. Fenxiang has the meaning of participating in social media, and gongxiang refers to technological aspects of sharing, while also conveying a sense of harmony. However, the interpersonal relations implied by fenxiang, and the political order implied by gongxiang, are quite different from those conveyed by ‘sharing’. Together, fenxiang and gongxiang construct a convergence of micro-level interpersonal harmony and macro-level social harmony. Thus, the language of sharing becomes the lens through which to observe the subtlety, complexity and idiosyncrasies of the Chinese internet. This article thus offers a new heuristic for understanding Chinese social media, while also pointing to an important facet of the discursive construction of Chinese social media. This implies a continuing need to de-westernize research into the internet and to identify cultural-specific meanings of social media.

Well-conceived digital strategies and campaigns will push brands ever forward in the consciousness of their audience and lead to lasting adoption, advocacy and, over time, increase expectation from industries as a whole. Engagement Path China’s social media landscape is three times more complicated than the other countries’ landscape. Each network is looking to monetise faster and further than its competitors, so they are always looking to ‘upgrade’ and ‘evolve’, making it hard for brands to match their pace and make effective judgements on where to focus their resources. The “Let’s Merry Christmas” campaign cross-mobile integration campaign ran before Christmas, encouraging consumers in Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces to use the Jiepang app to check in at Starbucks and earn a virtual badge, and then share their experience on the Weico app to generate buzz. When 20,000 badges were passed out, Starbucks rewarded badge earners with a free beverage upgrade around the Christmas holiday. Strategy and Execution To expand Starbucks’ influence as a social brand in the mobile age, the company executed a mobile campaign to celebrate Christmas with young consumers in three Eastern China provinces. Starbucks partnered with two of the most popular social mobile apps in China: Jiepang, a location-based app similar to Foursquare, and Weico, a third-party social mobile app for China’s largest social network that is similar to TweetDeck for Twitter. Jiepang delivered a solid base of more than three million young passionate users in China. Since its launch in 2010, it has partnered with more than 400 premium brands, including Louis Vuitton, Nike, The North Face, and H&M on different mobile campaigns. Weico is tied to Sina Weibo, the largest social network in China. While Sina Weibo’s official mobile app is more popular among the general public, Weico has attracted more than six million niche users who are more mobile-savvy and design-sensitive. The Weico partnership created an immersive branded mobile experience for users by offering a Starbucks branded downloadable “skin” that completely changed the outlook and feel of the app interface.
