David McCoy Iron Acton Community Choir We are currently preparing for Proms in the Meadow, where we have been invited to sing again. We are intending to sing a couple of great choruses from Carmen with the orchestra and then we have our own programme which we are working towards at the moment. Do come along to the Proms …. It is a great event on the Meadows, this year on July 2nd. Community singing is a powerful force for good and the Iron Acton Community Choir is real proof of that. It is a privilege to work with all the singers and we manage that fantastic balance between working very hard and having a lot of fun too. We now number about 50 members in total. We meet on a Tuesday evening in the Village Hall normally at 20.30 hrs and we pay a weekly sub to support the running of the choir in terms of hiring of the rehearsal space and the purchase of music. There is a currently a waiting list for joining but if you live within the Parish of Iron Acton and would be interested, then please let me know ([email protected]) and we’ll take it from there. Iron Acton Film Club The Film Club completed a very successful 2015/16 season with a celebratory showing of the latest James Bond film “Spectre”. Members were met with a glass of fizz and refreshments in return for attending in appropriate attire (I’ve never seen so many DJs!) This ended our second season operating on a membership basis with a small increase in members which makes our financial future look assured. We will shortly be inviting existing members to renew their membership for the 2016/17 season which will give them entry to 6 films. The dates for 2016/17 are as follows: 1st October 2016 12th November 2016 3rd December 2016 7th January 2017 4th February 2017 4th March 2017 I can’t tell you which films we will be showing yet as we will be emailing the membership in August to vote for their favourites. However, I am fairly confident that “Bridge of Spies” will be one of the first films as it received huge support in our last vote but wasn’t released on DVD in time for us to show it last season. Members can also benefit from the library of DVDs that the Film Club is accumulating. If you have missed a film, but would like to see it, for a nominal fee (£1) members can borrow DVDs from our library of previously shown films. If you would like to join the Film Club there is no need to wait for us to contact you, there should be an application form in this magazine which you can complete and send to me with a cheque for the membership fee of £25 per person. If you have any questions about Film Club membership please do not hesitate to contact me. Simon Cross (Chair) [email protected] 6 The A CTONIANS News email: [email protected] Follow us on: https://www.facebook.com/Actonians In February at the Avon Association of Drama’s One-Act Festival at Backwell Theatre, our Juniors won the Denning Award for Youth Drama (encouragement). Those of us who saw their performance were thoroughly impressed with their growth and commitment over the year. Well done Juniors! They have designed their own T-shirts (which you might have seen them wearing at the Iron Acton May Day festivities) and are now working on a performance for family and friends in mid-July. Following on from the success of last year, we had two more wonderful workshops in March and April with our guest actors, Mark Danbury and Mark McGann. Both were fully booked and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. We learned a great deal and hope this will reflect in our future productions. We trust those of you who came, enjoyed our last production of ‘Cranford’ and many thanks for your continued support. We will now be ‘gearing- up’ for the next offering of ‘Humble Boy’ by Charlotte Jones, which will run from 24 – 26 November 2016. Auditions will be held in the autumn, so do have a look at our website for details if you would like to audition. As ever, if there are any budding actors or possible backstage crew members who would like to join, contact us via our email or come along to one of our regular Wednesday night rehearsals in IAPH (Juniors 6 – 7.30 pm and Seniors from 7.30 pm).
