Samarasekera, OC President and Vice-Chancellor Thank you, Brian. Honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen, alumni and friends, Thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. The University of Alberta is our province’s flagship university and a major point of pride for the citizens of Edmonton. We are, without a doubt, YOUR university. For more than one hundred years, the people of Alberta have strongly supported the teaching and research activities of the U of A—and we, in turn, have done our utmost to serve the province and enhance the educational, cultural, social and economic foundation of Alberta’s communities. Today on behalf of the faculty, staff and students of the university, it is my pleasure to report to you on the U of A’s accomplishments and challenges of the last year—and to give you an outline of our main plans for the year ahead. Page 2 Major investment from and collaboration with our community partners has enabled so much of what we do. Let me give you a few examples of what that support has made possible in the last year. The University of Alberta is now educating more students than ever. Our student body numbers more than 38,000. In September we welcomed just over 7500 freshmen.

The Inventory lists construction projects in Alberta valued at $5.0 million or greater that are planned, underway, or have recently been completed. This edition also identifies projects that have been put on hold or deferred due to the economic downturn. Project data is obtained from public and private information sources. Where possible, this data has been verified with the project proponent/developer. However, users of the Inventory may wish to confirm project data with the proponent/developer. While efforts have been made to obtain the most recent information, it should be noted that projects are constantly being re-evaluated by industry. Although the Inventory attempts to be as comprehensive as possible, some information may not be available at the time of printing, or not published due to reasons of confidentiality. The Inventory can be accessed on the Internet at www.albertacanada.com/about-alberta/inventory-of- major-projects.html. New projects and (where possible) updated information on current projects is added to the Internet database on a monthly basis. The print edition of the report is produced quarterly. To get your donation matched by your employer, speak with your HR, Payroll or Corporate Giving Departments and ask about their donation matching program. Many companies will ask you to complete a matching gift form which you will then need to submit to VBC with your gift. After that we’ll take care of the rest. Following your company’s procedures may not ensure a matching gift, but it will increase the likelihood of success.
