Comparative floral presentation and bee-pollination in two Sprengelia species (Ericaceae) Karen A. Johnson* and Peter B. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Pollination by sonication is unusual in the Styphelioideae, family Ericaceae. Sprengelia incarnata and Sprengelia propinqua have floral characteristics that suggested they might be adapted to buzz pollination.Both species have florally similar nectarless flowers except that the stamens ofSprengelia propinqua spread widely after the flower opens, while those of Sprengelia incarnata cohere in the centre of the flower. To test whether sonication occurs, we observed bee behaviour at the flowers of both plant species, documented potential pollinators, and examined their floral and pollen attributes. We found that Sprengelia incarnata had smaller and drier pollen than Sprengelia propinqua. We found that Sprengelia incarnata was sonicated by native bees in the families Apidae (Exoneura), Halictidae (Lasioglossum) and Colletidae (Leioproctus, Euryglossa). Sprengelia propinqua was also visited by bees from the Apidae (Exoneura) and Halictidae (Lasioglossum), but pollen was collected by scraping. The introduced Apis mellifera (Apidae) foraged at Sprengelia propinqua but ignored Sprengelia incarnata. The two Sprengelia species shared some genera of potential pollinators, but appeared to have diverged enough in their floral and pollen characters to elicit different behaviours from the native and introduced bees. Bamford Consulting Ecologists 23 Plover Way KINGSLEY WA 6026 6th April 2017 Bindaring Park - Fauna Assessment Summary Bamford Consulting Ecologists was commissioned by Coterra Environment to conduct a Level 1 fauna assessment (desktop review and site inspection) of Bindaring Park in Bassendean (the study area). The fauna survey is required to provide information on the ecological values for the Town of Bassendean’s Stage 2 Bindaring Wetland Concept Plan Development. This plan include developing design options (within wetland area) to enhance ecological values and habitat. The purpose of this report is to provide information on the fauna values of the habitat, particularly for significant species, and an overview of the ecological function of the site within the local and regional context. This assessment focuses on vertebrate fauna associated with the wetland and surrounding parkland vegetation within the study area, with consideration for connectivity with the Swan River. An emphasis is placed on locally-occurring conservation significant species and their habitat. Relevant species include Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, and other local native species such as the Water Rat or Rakali. The fauna investigations were based on a desktop assessment and a field survey conducted in February 2017. The desktop study identified 180 vertebrate fauna species as potentially occurring in the Bindaring Park study area (see Table 3 and Appendix 5): five fish, 6 frogs, 20 reptiles, 134 birds, 8 native and 7 introduced mammals. -

This survey was required as there was potential for threatened flora to be present within the subject area and there is proposed clearing of native vegetation as part of the proposed bike trail. The scope of work included: Undertake Targeted Flora Survey across subject site through linear sampling (10m buffer) in vegetation types present and mapping of boundaries of vegetation; Undertake any identification of any flora species, including herbarium identification if required; GPS and map any populations of Threatened Species (if applicable); and Prepare brief report on findings as per appropriate government agency legislation and guidelines. It is noted this survey was undertaken during the spring flowering period. The threatened flora search of the linear bike trail found that the Mount Clarence reserve is a diverse habitat with four vegetation types mapped, being: 1. Granite outcrop and fringing Taxandria shrub land; 2. Tall Gastrolobium shrub land; 3. Open Jarrah/ Marri woodland; and 4. Coastal heath. In November 2016 an occurrence of Stylidium falcatum (P1) was found (5 plants) on laterite soils associated with a cleared alignment for a powerline, on the edge of the jarrah/ marri ecotype. -

LandCorp Denmark East Development Precinct Flora and Fauna Survey October 2016 Executive summary Introduction Through the Royalties for Regions “Growing our South” initiative, the Shire of Denmark has received funding to provide a second crossing of the Denmark River, to upgrade approximately 6.5 km of local roads and to support the delivery of an industrial estate adjacent to McIntosh Road. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by LandCorp to undertake a biological assessment of the project survey area. The purpose of the assessment was to identify and describe flora, vegetation and fauna within the survey area. The outcomes of the assessment will be used in the environmental assessment and approvals process and will identify the possible need for, and scope of, further field investigations will inform environmental impact assessment of the road upgrades. The survey area is approximately 68.5 ha in area and includes a broad area of land between Scotsdale Road and the Denmark River and the road reserve and adjacent land along East River Road and McIntosh Road between the Denmark Mt Barker Road and South Western Highway. A 200 m section north and south along the Denmark Mt Barker Road from East River Road was also surveyed. The biological assessment involved a desktop review and three separate field surveys, including a winter flora and fauna survey, spring flora and fauna survey and spring nocturnal fauna survey. Fauna surveys also included the use of movement sensitive cameras in key locations.
