With an additional gift, Mrs. Coolidge financed the construction of the Coolidge Auditorium which has become world famous for its magnificent acoustics and for the caliber of artists and ensembles who have played there. The McKiM FUND in the Library of Congress was created in 1970 through a bequest of Mrs. W. Duncan McKim, concert violinist, who won international prominence under her maiden name, Leonora Jackson, to support the commissioning and performance of chamber music for violin and piano. The audiovisual recording equipment in the Coolidge Auditorium was endowed in part by the Ira and Leonore Gershwin Fund in the Library of Congress. Request ASL and ADA accommodations five days in advance of the concert at 202-707-6362 [email protected]. Due to the Library's security procedures, patrons are strongly urged to arrive thirty min- utes before the start of the concert. Latecomers will be seated at a time determined by the artists for each concert. Children must be at least seven years old for admittance to the chamber music con- certs.

  • Selective Tradition and Structure of Feeling in the 2008 Presidential Election: a Genealogy of “Yes We Can Can”
Selective Tradition and Structure of Feeling in the 2008 Presidential Election: A Genealogy of “Yes We Can Can” BRUCE CURTIS Abstract I examine Raymond Williams’s concepts “structure of feeling” and “selective tradition” in an engagement with the novel technical-musical-cultural politics of the 2008 Barack Obama presidential election campaign. Williams hoped structure of feeling could be used to reveal the existence of pre-emergent, counter-hegemonic cultural forces, forces marginalized through selective tradition. In a genealogy of the Allen Toussaint composition, “Yes We Can Can,” which echoed a key campaign slogan and chant, I detail Toussaint’s ambiguous role in the gentrification of music and dance that descended from New Orleans’s commerce in pleasure. I show that pleasure commerce and struggles against racial segregation were intimately connected. I argue that Toussaint defanged rough subaltern music, but he also promoted a shift in the denotative and connotative uses of language and in the assignments of bodily energy, which Williams held to be evidence of a change in structure of feeling. It is the question of the counter-hegemonic potential of subaltern musical practice that joins Raymond Williams’s theoretical concerns and the implication of Allen Toussaint’s musical work in cultural politics. My address to the question is suggestive and interrogative rather than declarative and definitive. Barack Obama’s 2008 American presidential election and the post-election celebrations were the first to be conducted under the conditions of “web 2.0,” whose rapid spread from the mid-2000s is a historic “cultural break” similar in magnitude and consequence to the earlier generalization of print culture.1 In Stuart Hall’s terms, such breaks are moments in which the cultural conditions of political hegemony change.2 They are underpinned by changes in technological forces, in relations of production and communication.

L1 THE ORIGINALS 547 27 maart 2016 Arnold Rypens - Kirsten 2:28 1 The Chokin' Kind (Howard) RCA WAYLON JENNINGS 1 Dit zijn The Originals bij L1 Radio met een dubbele zelfs: The Chokin' Kind van Waylon Jennings, B-kant van zijn Love Of The Common People. Dát werd een hit voor Paul Young, The Chokin' Kind werd een R&B n°1 voor Joe Simon én stond ook mee op de From A Whisper To A Scream-lp van Allen Toussaint waar we hier nog altijd niet klaar mee zijn. 3:29 2 From A Whisper To A Scream (Toussaint) Tiffany ALLEN TOUSSAINT 1 Vooral een hit voor Robert Palmer achteraf deze From A Whisper To A Scream van Allen Toussaint, niet te verwarren met het gelijknamige Elvis Costello- nummer wat op zich een Original werd toen Clouseau daar in België Gefluister En Geschreeuw van maakte. Toeval wil bovendien dat Costello en Toussaint ooit samen een cd opnamen, The River In Reverse, waarop ze Tears, Tears And More Tears laten, origineel van Lee Dorsey. 3:25 3 Tears, Tears And More Tears (Toussaint) Polydor LEE DORSEY A13 5:31 4 On Your Way Down (Toussaint) WB LITTLE FEAT 4 Little Feat en toch nog altijd Allen Toussaint time in The Originals, Allen Allerheiligen klinkt wat miscast misschien op Paaszondag, maar zowel Tears, Tears And More Tears als On Your Way Down zijn van hem, origineel van hem zelfs maar de gelegenheid om nog eens iets van Little Feat te draaien is ons te sterk. Hetzelfde geldt voor Frankie Miller stuff, ook al zo'n Allen Toussaint adept.

  • What Is Blues Dancing? Shaped by the African
Blues Dancing and its African American ROOTS WHAT IS BLUES DANCING? “Blues dance” is a new name describing a family of dances done to blues music and created within African American communites. Writng in the 1970s, African American jazz critc Albert Murray was the frst to categorize these dances as “blues-idiom.” Murray’s descripton of reactons to blues music—spontaneity, improvisaton, and control—applies to blues dance as well. SHAPED BY THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Despite enslavers’ atempts to eradicate African Americans’ heritage, African roots persist and are evident in blues music and dance characteristcs such as layering rhythms, emphasis on improvisaton, and a call and response format. Lyrics and music express everyday life experiences, ofen refectng themes of hardship, from racism and poverty to personal relatonships. Learning by watching and copying, as well as valuing innovaton and creaton of an individual’s unique personal style within the given aesthetc, is also part of the cultural traditon. Music and movement for African Americans during enslavement was ofen limited to actvites such as Christan prayer meetngs, work chants, and entertainment for plantaton owners. Afer emancipaton, African Americans gradually had more freedom to gather, play music, and dance on their own. Field hands in the South socialized in juke joints, small shacks where beer and liquor were sold, one or two local musicians played, and people danced. In Northern cites during the Great Migraton of the 1920s, middle-class blues and jazz musicians and dancers gathered in small apartments for occasions like rent partes. African Americans danced—and contnue to dance—on front porches and street corners, and in homes, back rooms of restaurants, community centers, and ballrooms.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

A Year in the Life of Bottle the Curmudgeon What you are about to read is the book of the blog of the Facebook project I started when my dad died in 2019. It also happens to be many more things: a diary, a commentary on contemporaneous events, a series of stories, lectures, and diatribes on politics, religion, art, business, philosophy, and pop culture, all in the mostly daily publishing of 365 essays, ostensibly about an album, but really just what spewed from my brain while listening to an album. I finished the last essay on June 19, 2020 and began putting it into book from. The hyperlinked but typo rich version of these essays is available at: https://albumsforeternity.blogspot.com/ Thank you for reading, I hope you find it enjoyable, possibly even entertaining. bottleofbeef.com exists, why not give it a visit? Have an album you want me to review? Want to give feedback or converse about something? Send your own wordy words to [email protected] , and I will most likely reply. Unless you’re being a jerk. © Bottle of Beef 2020, all rights reserved. Welcome to my record collection. This is a book about my love of listening to albums. It started off as a nightly perusal of my dad's record collection (which sadly became mine) on my personal Facebook page. Over the ensuing months it became quite an enjoyable process of simply ranting about what I think is a real art form, the album. It exists in three forms: nightly posts on Facebook, a chronologically maintained blog that is still ongoing (though less frequent), and now this book.
