English 10, English 10 Honors Syllabus Mr. Freitag 2016-2017 Course Purpose: To develop communication skills through formal study of the English language in grammar, literature, and writing.
Honors Students: Honor students are expected to participate in the following activities as well as the REQUIRED advanced opportunities. Honor students are expected to come to class prepared and willing to participate in intellectual and thoughtful discussion of the daily lessons.
Objectives: Students will: review, learn, and apply grammar, usage and mechanics rules build and utilize a more comprehensive vocabulary compose descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive essays and projects read and analyze a variety of literary genres
Text: Prentice Hall Literature, Grade 10 Prentice Hall Writing Coach, Grade 10 Regular ed. Students are required to read the following: 12 Angry Men Monster Honor students are required to read (200 pts each): To Kill a Mockingbird Scarlet Letter Cold Sassy Tree Plus two (2) from the attached list
Materials: 1 two-inch or larger notebook Notebook paper Writing utensils (blue or black ink are required for final drafts) Honor students need 100 3x5 lined notecards for research project
Course Syllabus: Third nine weeks First nine weeks Grammar Content: Grammar review by diagramming Grammar Content: Pronoun Case, Correct Modifiers, Writing Content: Begin honors’ research project Capitalization, Punctuation Vocabulary Content: Retest/review literary elements in general Vocabulary Content: Begin memorization of literary elements classes. Weekly vocabulary lessons and tests for honor class. (50+ terms to be tested frequently and randomly throughout Literature Content: Honor students begin reading Cold Sassy semester) Tree and reading selection #2. General classes begin reading Literature Content: General classes begin reading 12 Angry Monster. Men. No Writing Content: Begin Daily writing and weekly essays. vocabulary for honors class. Vocabulary Content: weekly vocabulary lessons and tests Literature Content: Poetry Unit. Students begin historical and Literature Content: Literature Units 1, 2, and 3. Honor students literary study of Julius Caesar begin 12 Angry Men and Scarlet Letter. Speaking: Honor students: be prepared to present research Speaking: Continue public reading of play project if time permits

Mr. Freitag’s H. Eng 10 must select two(2) books from the following list. One book MUST be read as a summer assignment due August 17, 2016. The second book must be completed in April. All students will take an “A.R.” type test on these due dates.
