Social events Agenda/Minutes – Feb. 4, 2010 - Learnings from 2010 Workshop. - Celeste Cicerone Having on-line wireless internet was very helpful. Next year will have a printer. Weatherford “wine savvy” reception was very good. Need to organize presenters’ gifts for next year. Courses were very well received. Some people went to courses they didn’t sign up for. Send a reminder e-mail in advance. Use one generic background for course materials. Should be white.
- Joe Clegg Would like to have more young, good looking gals. Need to have a design course.
- Ken Decker Enjoyed networking with all of the people. Good discussion with PTC and Statoil. They think this is the best Gas-Lift Workshop in the world. Would like more presentations on “new” technologies. Need to start advertising earlier. Only two presentations by Operating Companies. Some thought that the API meetings were part of the draw for attending.
- Cleon Dunham Would like to have a Technical Review Committee. Cleon Dunham and Tommy Nations will explore this. Presentations in PDF are not good. Need to have an author’s breakfast.
- Lisa Elliott It is important to have good traffic at the Exhibit Booths. Need to tell others about this. Willing to advertise using Service Company mailing lists.
- Mike Johnson Would have been good to have two screens in the room. Was glad to have his supervisor come. Glad to have new ideas presented. Generate a general “rule” about use of company names, trade marks, etc. Need to tell people about the “wifi” code. Mrs. Blann really appreciated our “honoring” Jack Blann.

Good papers – better on the 2nd day. Timing was good. Some complained that room was too cold
- Wayne Mabry Enjoyed Bill White, but some were turned off by him being a Democrat. Would like more Operating Company participation. We need to encourage Operating Company management to send their people.
- Juan Carlos Mantecon Good food. Good coffee. Arrangements and planning were good. Presentations should not be commercial. But some limited amount may be worthwhile.
- John Martinez Need to discuss continuing education. Time to stop having “Artificial Lift” selection. Need to continue a design course. In Singapore can have a course on Dynamic Simulation? Need to also have a course on dual gas-lift, operations, and automation. For 2012, consider other locations in Houston. Nice space in hotel for Exhibits, food, etc. Need local advertising – TV, newspaper, etc.
- Tom Nations Turnout was very good. Maybe advertise earlier in the year. Good Exhibitor turnout and good traffic at the exhibits. Placement of the Exhibits was good. Enjoyed networking opportunity and to see old friends. ConocoPhillips was the only major Oil Company to Sponsor.
- Greg Stephenson Lee Mathews from Qatar said this is the best Workshop in the Industry How can we reach out to more Operating Companies? Need Service Companies to invite their e-mail lists. Sell “day” passes. Somebody said to include other forms of lift. Having the “wine” event on Wednesday was a good time.
- Ron Schmidt Agree with other comments. Use clip-on microphones for speakers. Agenda/Minutes – Mar. 30, 2010 - Are there any further learnings from the 2010 Workshop? - There has been a great deal of discussion about whether or not ASME will continue to sponsor international workshops. - Initially they said they would not. - Now they are considering it. - If they won’t, there are alternatives. - The ASME Petroleum Division Executive Committee has agreed to go ahead with the 2011 Gas-Lift Workshop Jan. 19, 2011--- Meeting Agendas and Minutes Page 5
event; both domestic and international. - This is being reviewed in New York. - We should have final approval from New York this week. Agenda/Minutes – April 28, 2010 - Tim Graves: Has approval for the 2011 Workshop in Singapore been received from ASME in New York? - Tim Graves: We do have approval from New York.
3. Gas-Lift Workshop Budgets and Finances a. Status of Financials for the 2010 Workshop. b. Budget for the 2011 Workshop. Agenda/Minutes – April 28, 2010 - Tim Graves: What is the status of the final Financial Report for the 2010 Workshop? - Tim Graves: Is there any new information on the Budget for the 2011 Workshop? - Tim Graves: The financials for 2010 are set. - Tim Graves: The budget for 2011 is OK.
4. Venue for 2011 workshop c. Per our normal rotation, the 2011 Workshop will be in an international location. d. Are we all in agreement with having it in Singapore? e. What hotel is recommended? f. What dates are recommended? Agenda/Minutes – Feb. 4, 2010 - Discuss the venue for the 2011 Workshop in Singapore. ======- Eric Lovie of Schlumberger is moving to Singapore and will be helpful. - We need to line up support from other companies in the area. - We need to have Presentations from the area. - Make a flier and a “request for presentations” for Schlumberger, etc. to handout. Done. - Obtain contact information on each SPE chapter in the area and “buy” an ad to be placed in their local newsletters. - Add Eric Lovie to the Steering Committee: [email protected] Done Agenda/Minutes – Mar. 30, 2010 - Are there any additional comments on the venue for the 2011 Workshop in Singapore? - ASME and Schlumberger will work on securing the actual venue in Singapore. Agenda/Minutes – April 28, 2010 - Celeste Cicerone: Have ASME and Schlumberger secured the actual venue in Singapore? - We need to know this so we can place this information on the web site. - Cleon Dunham will visit with Schlumberger to get this underway. (This is underway.) Agenda/Minutes – May 26, 2010 - Celeste Cicerone: Have ASME and Schlumberger secured the actual venue in Singapore? - We need to know this so we can place this information on the web site. - We are looking at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore. - This was selected by ASME. Schlumberger wasn’t involved with the selection. - We still need to negotiate a contact with them. This should be ready by early June. Agenda/Minutes – June 23, 2010 - Are we all set with the venue for the 2011 Workshop? - Will it be the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore? - The Hotel wants $6,000 (Singapore $) per night for overnight storage of Exhibits that 2011 Gas-Lift Workshop Jan. 19, 2011--- Meeting Agendas and Minutes Page 6
are set up. - We agreed that is isn’t reasonable to have people take down their exhibits each evening and set them up the next morning. - Tommy White will work with his contacts in Singapore to see if this charge can be reduced or alleviated. Agenda/Minutes – July 21, 2010 - Schlumberger has visited four hotels in Singapore. - They are waiting for formal proposals from two of them. - Has an actual venue been agreed by ASME, Schlumberger, et al? - Eric Lovie reviewed the Schlumberger visit to several hotels and a conference center in Singapore. - Eric Lovie recommends the Pan Pacific Hotel. The Conference Center is located next to the Pan Pacific. - ASME will review the proposals from the Grand Copthorne, the Pan Pacific Hotel, and Conference Center and come back with a firm recommendation by the end of the week of July 19, 2010. Agenda/Minutes – Sept. 9, 2010 - Is agreed to hold the 2010 Workshop in the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore. - This is now listed on the ALRDC web site. - Are there any other issues with this at this time? - There are problems between the hotel and ASME’s Legal Dept. - There are three clauses in the hotel’s contract that ASME doesn’t agree with. - Celeste Torkay and Tim Graves of ASME will stay on top of this and let us know next week if this has been resolved. - It is hasn’t, it may be necessary for ALRDC or Schlumberger to sign a contract with the hotel. Agenda/Minutes – Oct. 7, 2010 - Is it now fully agreed to hold the 2010 Workshop in the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore? - Are there any outstanding issues to be resolved? - The contract with the hotel has not been signed yet, but ASME is working on this and we are assured that it will be signed. - The contract will be worked out and signed in the near future. Agenda/Minutes – Nov. 5, 2010 - Celeste Torkay: Has the contract been signed with the Pan Pacific Hotel? - Are there any other issues with the hotel for the Workshop in Singapore? - The Pan Pacific Hotel has agreed to not have construction during the meeting. - The Houston ASME office will ask New York to sign the contract. This will be done next week. - There are no other outstanding issues. Agenda/Minutes – Dec. 16, 2010 - Celeste Torkay: Has the contract finally been signed with the Pan Pacific Hotel? - Are there any other issues with the hotel for the Workshop in Singapore? - The contract with the Hotel has been signed. - The current guaranteed number of rooms is 170 room nights for the week. - They will release some rooms before the event if they are not claimed. - They didn’t increase the cost for meals but added more room rental for the exhibit rooms. 5. Costs for 2011 workshop a. How much should we charge for registration? Cost in 2010 = $575 b. How much for Continuing Education? Cost in 2010 = $545 c. How much for Exhibits? Cost in 2010 = $600, $900, $1200 Agenda/Minutes – Feb. 4 , Mar. 30, 2010 - Should we stay with the same charges for the 2011 Workshop? - Or, given the extra costs of an overseas Workshop, we could increase the costs to: - Registration: $650 - Continuing Education $600 - Exhibits: $700, $1000, $1400 - Thoughts? - The amounts listed above are agreed for the 2011 Workshop. - We will not charge a higher amount for late registration. - We will not have a one-day one day charge. - The rate for staffing a booth only will be $150 per day. - We will give a discount to active API/ISO members who are actually working on current API/ISO documents. - They will pay the full amount up front and can get a refund if they are eligible for it. Agenda/Minutes – April 28, 2010 - Are there any more comments on the charges for the 2011 Workshop? - If not, these will be announced as the costs for the 2011 Workshop? - These costs are OK with everyone. Agenda/Minutes – May 26, 2010 - Do we want to have separate costs for Early Bird vs. larger amount for later on? - We do want to have separate Early Bird and later costs. - The early bird rate will be good up to one month before the event and then the costs will go up $100. This has now been posted on the web site.
6. Technical agenda for 2011 workshop a. Possible technical agenda session topics b. Possible session chair persons Agenda/Minutes – Feb. 4, Mar. 30, 2010 - For a Workshop in Singapore, it would be good to focus on Technical Agenda topics of specific interest in the region. - What are these topics? - Who will serve on a Technical Review Committee to review Abstracts and Technical Presentations? - We need to schedule and Author’s Breakfast on Wednesday and Thursday. - Plan for two screens in the Technical Presentation room. - Use clip-on microphones for Speakers. - The topics should be favorable for the Far East. - We should look at the program we had in Kuala Lumpur. - Potential topics for the 2011 Workshop are: - Duals - PPO Valves - Facilities - Automation - Field Reviews - New Technology - Valve Testing - Subsea 2011 Gas-Lift Workshop Jan. 19, 2011--- Meeting Agendas and Minutes Page 8
- The Technical Review Committee will consist of Cleon Dunham, Jim Hall, and Tom Nations. Agenda/Minutes – April 28, 2010 - Are there additional comments on the technical agenda for the Workshop in Singapore? - Are there any leads on actual Technical Presentations at this time? - We need to get input from Walrick van Zandvoord and Mile Dolan on this. They are new members of the Steering Committee. - Cleon Dunham will send an e-mail to people in the region. (This has been sent.) Agenda/Minutes – May 26, 2010 - Walrick van Zandvoord responded that there should be a section on New Technology. - This is on the agenda. - ExxonMobil will make a technical presentation on an update on their experiences with Well Tracer and one on Gas-Lift Optimization. Agenda/Minutes – June 23, 2010 - Are there any nominations for Technical Presentations for the 2011 Workshop? - John Martinez and Cleon Dunham (Done) will send e-mails to their contact lists. - All Member Companies are asked to send notes to their contacts. - Schlumberger will probably have two technical presentations. Agenda/Minutes – July 21, 2010 - Are there any nominations for Technical Presentations for the 2011 Workshop? - Are companies sending notes to their contacts and asking for presentations? - ConocoPhillips will have a presentation from Indonesia. - We may have one or two presentations from PDVSA. - Cleon Dunham will send a copy of Ali Hernandez’s paper on the Thornhill-Craver method to Ken Decker. Done. Agenda/Minutes – Sept. 9, 2010 - Are there any specific Technical Presentations defined at this time? - Are there any new nominations for Technical Presentations for the 2011 Workshop? - Are companies sending notes to their contacts and asking for presentations? - It is agreed to not pursue the presentation by Ali Hernandez of PDVSA on Thornhill- Craver at this time. - However, there is another paper by Ali Hernandez on a model for gas-lift valve performance. - This could be accepted for presentation at the Workshop. If Ali Hernandez wants, Ken Decker can present it. - John Martinez and Mike Johnson will be in KL in October and will try to meet with local people to see if presentations can be obtained. - Cleon Dunham will be in KL in October and will try to meet with local people. Agenda/Minutes – Oct. 7, 2010 - Are there any specific Technical Presentations defined at this time? - Are there any new nominations for Technical Presentations for the 2011 Workshop? - Are companies sending notes to their contacts and asking for presentations? - Stuart Scott says that Shell will have two presentations; one on high reliability gas-lift valves and one on sub-sea gas-lift concept. - Tom Nations says that ConocoPhillips is working on obtaining approval for one from Indonesia. - Ken Decker reported that the PDVSA paper may not be ready in time for presentation. - Ken Decker can offer a presentation if necessary. Agenda/Minutes – Nov. 5, 2010 - We have not yet received any abstracts for Technical Presentations. - What is the status of potential presentations from Shell, ConocoPhillips, Decker Tech.? - Petronas has said they will present one or more Technical Presentations. 2011 Gas-Lift Workshop Jan. 19, 2011--- Meeting Agendas and Minutes Page 9
- Shell is working on two presentations. - ExxonMobil will have two presentations. - Oxy people in the Middle East may not be able to come since the MEALF is the same week. - Ken Decker will provide an abstract. Agenda/Minutes – Dec. 16, 2010 - So far, eighteen (18) Technical Presentations have been nominated. - Nine abstracts have been received from: - Shell E&P - Shell Brunei - Statoil, Schlumberger - Weatherford - ExxonMobil (2) - PTC Norway (3) - Nine more abstracts are needed on Presentations that have been nominated. - Three more nominations are needed. - Schlumberger is working on another possible presentation. Agenda/Minutes – Jan. 6, 2011 - Twenty two presentations have been nominated. - We need twenty one, so one will need to be placed on stand-by or the program will need to be extended. - So far, we’ve receive abstracts for seventeen. We’re missing abstracts from - Shell 1 - PDO 2 - Schlumberger 1 - SPT Group 1 - Are there thoughts on what we do with the extra presentation? We could place one on stand-by, or extend the program by one? - Mike Johnson is willing to have his Presentation placed on stand-by if need be. Mike’s presentation has been scheduled for the last slot in the day. If he can complete it in less than 30 minutes, this will still give time for a brief Panel Discussion. - Cleon Dunham will prepare the Lift of Abstracts and place the Abstracts on the Web Site. Done. - Cleon Dunham will send a list of the Presenters to Celeste Torkay. Done. Agenda/Minutes – Jan. 19, 2011 - Twenty two presentations have been nominated. - So far, we’ve receive abstracts for eighteen. We’re missing abstracts from - Shell 1 - PDO 2 - PTC 1 - So far, we’ve received four PowerPoint presentations. - When is the “drop dead” date for delivery of the list of Presentations and Abstracts to Celeste Torkay for printing? - John Martinez will check with Shell Aberdeen. Done. They will submit a presentation. - Drop dead date for submitting materials to be printed is Jan. 25, 2011. Agenda/Minutes – Feb. 2, 2011 - All of the abstracts for twenty one Technical Presentations have been received and have been sent to Celeste Torkay for placement on the Workshop Handout. - As of Feb. 2, nineteen Technical Presentations have been submitted and two are still outstanding. - We are in communication with the authors of these presentations and it appears that both will be delivered on time. - This was presented to the Steering Committee for information. 2011 Gas-Lift Workshop Jan. 19, 2011--- Meeting Agendas and Minutes Page 10
7. Continuing education for 2011 workshop a. Possible continuing education topics b. Possible continuing education instructors Agenda/Minutes – Feb. 4, Mar. 30, 2010 - For a Workshop in Singapore, it would be good to focus on Continuing Education topics of specific interest in the region. - What are these topics? - Possibilities, for three parallel courses: - Gas-Lift Design 2 Days - Dynamic Simulation 2 Days - Dual Gas-Lift 1 Day - Gas-Lift Operations ½ Day - Gas-Lift Automation ½ Day - It is important to consider the audience. - We need a committee to review the course materials. The following people agree to be on the committee: Cleon Dunham, Jim Hall. - We need to provide a template for each Course. This will be similar (possibly the same as) the template used for the Technical Presentations. - We should establish learning objectives for each course. Agenda/Minutes – April 28, 2010 - Sid Smith has said that he is interested in going to Singapore and teaching Gas-Lift Design. This course needs to be updated. - Ideally, Ken Decker can come and teach Gas-Lift Valve Testing and Modeling. - Juan Carlos Mantecon is willing to come to Singapore and teach a course on Dynamic Simulation. - Cleon Dunham is willing to teach Gas-Lift Automation and can teach Gas-Lift Operations if necessary. - Shall we ask Tom Ryan if he is willing to each Dual Gas-Lift? Another option for this could be Steve Gossell of Aramco. - Are there additional comments on the Continuing Education program at this time? - We can ask Sid Smith if he would add PPO design to the Gas-Lift Design course. (Message sent to Sid.) - Ken Decker will work with Sid Smith to integrate gas-lift valve testing into the Gas-Lift Design course. - We will ask Tom Ryan if he can go. If he can’t come, can he suggest someone? (Message sent to Tom.) - We don’t have experience with Steve Gossell as a teacher. - Cleon Dunham will ask Ron Schmidt if he can teach the Gas-Lift Operations course. (Message sent to Ron.) Agenda/Minutes – May 26, 2010 - Sid Smith and Ken Decker will handle the Gas-Lift Design course. - Juan Carlos Mantecon will handle the Dynamic Simulation course. - Ron Schmidt will handle the Gas-Lift Operations course. - Cleon Dunham will handle the Gas-Lift Automation course. - Tom Ryan cannot come to Singapore. We have all of the Dual Gas-Lift course material from the 2010 Workshop. Who can teach the Dual Gas-Lift course? - Cleon Dunham will handle the Dual Gas-Lift course. - The course plan has now been updated on the web site. Agenda/Minutes – June 23, 2010 - Are there any comments on the Continuing Education plan for the 2011 Workshop? - There were no comments on the Continuing Education plan. Agenda/Minutes – Oct. 7, 2010 - Are there any comments on the Continuing Education plan for the 2011 Workshop? - There were no comments on the Continuing Education plan for 2011. Agenda/Minutes – Nov. 5, 2010 - Are there any comments on the Continuing Education plan for the 2011 Workshop? - The materials for the classes need to be sent to be sent to Celeste Torkay by Jan. 7, 2011. Agenda/Minutes – Dec. 16, 2010 - Are there any comments on the Continuing Education plan for the 2011 Workshop? - The manuals can be printed in Singapore, if necessary. Agenda/Minutes – Jan. 6, 2011 - Are there any comments on the Continuing Education plan for the 2011 Workshop? - Have all instructors sent their course material to Celeste Torkay for printing? - Will it be printed in Houston or Singapore? - Still need to receive information from Juan Carlos Mantecon and Ron Schmidt. - Cleon Dunham will contact them. Agenda/Minutes – Jan. 19, 2011 - Are there any comments on the Continuing Education plan for the 2011 Workshop? - Have the necessary computer projectors been lined up? - Two computer projectors are lined up. - ASME will rent the third one, if another one can’t be found. - Still waiting on Ron Schmidt to submit his information. - Cleon Dunham will check with him.
