22 newsregion 37 / june15 newsregion 37 / june15 23 Over 15,000 magnificent square metres and 2,000 stunning exhibits from 1,300 moving years, the DomQuartier Salzburg invites you to take a unique tour through Salzburg’s Baroque heart. Salzburg’s DomQuartier opened its doors one year ago. Architecturally, it includes the self-contained ensemble of the Residenz Palace, the Ca- thedral, St. Peter’s Abbey, and the “Wallistrakt”. This impressive district invites visitors to follow the trail of the powerful prince archbishops on a varied and spectacular, 1.3-kilometre-long tour. More than 400 years ago, the archbishops began transforming Salzburg into a Baroque jewel, following the Italian example. The Cathedral and Residenz Palace formed a centre of power for these territorial heads of state, who were equally secular and spiritual rulers. With the political separation of the spiritual and secular spheres of power, the connecting doors were also closed. The DomQuartier has opened these doors again and has given new life to an historic idea. The architectural link was restored – together with St. Peter’s Benedictine Abbey – creating a unique, internationally-oriented museum project. With this merger, 200 years of Salzburg’s great history have been once again made comprehensible and ready to be directly experienced. Visitors experience the interplay of state and church history, art, and architecture. There are also imposing views of the city centre and city mountains to be enjoyed. In addition to the unparalleled architectural masterpieces, the luxuriously decorated rooms, and valuable artistic treasures, the DomQuartier offers a wealth of special tours, events, workshops and exciting special exhibits. It is a lively meeting place that encourages visitors to keep coming back.
