A versão agora publicada beneficiou de pequenos ajustamentos do texto, de uma actualização da biliografia e do acrescento de alguns elementos de informação novos, nomeadamente no que diz respeito a datações radiométricas. A obra compreende dois volumes. No volume II agruparam-se os capítulos sobre a história da investigação e a metodologia utilizada na análise dos materiais líticos, bem como os estudos monográficos das diferentes colecções. No volume I, sintetizaram-se as conclusões derivadas desses estudos, e procurou-se integrá-las num quadro histórico e geográfico mais lato, o das sociedades de caçadores do Paleolítico Superior do Sudoeste da Europa. A leitura do volume I é suficiente para a aquisição de uma visão de conjunto dos conhecimentos actuais respeitantes a este período em Portugal. Uma tal leitura deve ter em conta, porém, que essa síntese pressupõe uma crítica das fontes utilizadas. Em Arqueologia, o instrumento dessa crítica é a análise tafonómica dos sítios e espólios. A argumentação sobre as respectivas condições de jazida é desenvolvida no quadro dos estudos apresentados no volume II. É neles que deve ser buscada a razão de ser das opções tomadas quanto à caracterização dos contextos (ocupações singulares, palimpsestos de ocupações múltiplas), à sua homogeneidade (uma só época ou várias épocas), à sua integridade (em posição primária ou secundária), à sua representatividade (universo ou amostra, recuperação integral ou parcial) e à sua cronologia (ou cronologias). -

Stahlschmidt20, Yoel Rak2 & Omry Barzilai6 The late Middle Palaeolithic (MP) settlement patterns in the Levant included the repeated use of caves and open landscape sites. The fossil record shows that two types of hominins occupied the region during this period—Neandertals and Homo sapiens. Until recently, diagnostic fossil remains were found only at cave sites. Because the two populations in this region left similar material cultural remains, it was impossible to attribute any open-air site to either species. In this study, we present newly discovered fossil remains from intact archaeological layers of the open-air site ‘Ein Qashish, in northern Israel. The hominin remains represent three individuals: EQH1, a nondiagnostic skull fragment; EQH2, an upper right third molar (RM3); and EQH3, lower limb bones of a young Neandertal male. EQH2 and EQH3 constitute the first diagnostic anatomical remains of Neandertals at an open-air site in the Levant. The optically stimulated luminescence ages suggest that Neandertals repeatedly visited ‘Ein Qashish between 70 and 60 ka. The discovery of Neandertals at open-air sites during the late MP reinforces the view that Neandertals were a resilient population in the Levant shortly before Upper Palaeolithic Homo sapiens populated the region. -

Dmanisi Hominin Fossils and the Problem of Multiple Species in the Early Homo Genus

D4500 (Skull 5), dated to 1.8 million years ago, is the most complete fossil associated with occupation contexts of the early Pleistocene. Its discovery has highlighted the debate concerning the plurality of species, not just at the beginning of the Homo genus, but for much of its evolution. The Skull 5 fossil presents a mixture of primitive and derived characteristics associated with Homo erectus and Homo habilis sensu lato. Based on data derived from the five Dmanisi skulls, we consider the hypothesis of a single evolving lineage of early Homo as a mode to explain the great range of variation of the Dmanisi fossils. Our work consists of evaluating the hypothesis that there was one unique species in the early Homo genus, Homo erectus sensu lato, through calculating the coefficient of variation, estimated from reference literature and the Dmanisi skulls. Our results do not suggest that all fossils of the early Homo genus represent a single species. Consequently, Neandertal postcanine dental morphology has been generally assumed to be much like our own. This research examines this assumption through a systematic and comparative study of Neandertal postcanine dental morphology. Results are interpreted in light of two competing models for modern human origins: Multiregional Evolution (MRE) and Recent African Origin (RAO). Postcanine dental data were collected using the well-standardized methodology of the Arizona State University dental anthropology system. Additional dental traits were added by the author. Samples include individuals representing Homo erectus, archaic Homo sapiens, Neandertals, early anatomically modern Homo sapiens, Upper Paleolithic Europeans and seven recent human geographic populations. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses, together with cladistic analysis, were used to make quantified assessments of Neandertal affinities. The results are inconsistent with predictions of the Multiregional Evolution hypothesis as it concerns Europe: phenetic analyses indicate that contemporary and Upper Paleolithic Europeans are among the groups least similar to Neandertals, and that there is no evidence of gradual evolution toward the modern human dental condition in Europe. -

Carmel, Israel) revealed an important archaeological sequence of late Mid- dle Paleolithic units superimposed by Early Upper Paleolithic ones. This sequence provides important insights concerning our knowledge of the Middle-Upper Paleolithic transition in the Levant. Here we present a detailed description of the lithic assemblage from Unit V, considered as the last Middle Paleolithic occupation on site. This assemblage is dated to 48/49 ky cal BP, thus representing the final stages of the Middle Paleolithic in the region. Although in previous publications the material of Unit V was considered as a Middle/Upper Paleolithic admix- ture, the results of the current study indicate (at least concerning the assemblage presented here) that the number of Upper Paleolithic items is negligible. We discuss the role of this assemblage for understanding some of the late Middle Paleolithic lithic variability, as well as the appearance of the Upper Paleolithic blade technology in the Levant. -

Paleosol Carbonate and Pollen Evidence for Deforestation and Cooling in South Asia Caused by the Toba Super‐Eruption: Implications for Human Evolution The eruption of Toba, Sumatra, ~73,000 years ago was the largest explosive eruption of the past two million years. Its impacts on global and regional climate and on human evolution remain controversial. Ash from the Toba eruption crops out as channel‐fill and lake basin deposits across peninsular India, and is present in marine sediment cores from the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the East China Sea. Ice core records show that this eruption marks a six‐year‐long volcanic winter, and the abrupt onset of a 1,800‐year‐ long period of the coldest temperatures of the last 125,000 years. We present results of two independent lines of inquiry into the impact of this eruption and instant ice age on ecosystems in India and Sumatra.
