Perfect Guru
Perfect Guru By H. H. Krishna Chaitanya Swami 1 Table of contents Introduction Chapter 1 Who can be called a guru? Chapter 2 Qualities and activities of guru. Chapter 3 Indra lost heaven by offending his spiritual master. Dedicated to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada and Bhakti Svarupa Damodara Swami Srila Sripada Introducion Introduction A guru is one who disseminates transcendental knowledge among his disciples with reference to distinction of matter, spirit and Supreme Spirit, Godhead. Many teachers have tried to be gurus, but not all of them could become a guru for want of necessary qualification. To be a guru, one must be able to protect his disciples from falling down into the repeated cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease by associating the disciple with God in yoga. Guru teaches mainstream yoga practices, given in the scriptures, which unites the disciple with the Supreme Lord. A Guru does not manifest magic, gold, siddhis. He neither watch TV serials nor digital movies, and certainly does none of the prohibited acts viz. eat betel nuts, smoke ganja, and travel for amusement, eat meat, drink alcohol, has close association with females, nor gamble. He cannot be identified from a long beard and curly long hair with golden turban, a clever disguise to attract the followers. The goal of a guru is not to render dry social services in the form of hospitals and schools unless it is strongly connected to the Supreme Lord Krishna. He does not wear gold and diamond ornaments on his body, does not dance with his female disciples. -
How I Came to Krishna Consciousness by Lokanath Swami
How I Came to Krishna Consciousness by Lokanath Swami The unseen merciful hand of Lord Krsna helps a determined young student become one of Srila Prabhupada’s first Indian disciples. I was born in Aravade, a small village in the Indian state of Maharashtra that differs little from more than seven hundred thousand others in India. After I graduated from high school, my family sent me to Bombay to study chemistry in college. But my college career was not to be. In the year 1971, in late March, something happened to prevent me from following the program my family had so carefully laid out for me. For the first time, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was touring India with his foreign disciples. They had arrived in Bombay just before I had, and now they were going to have a pandal (a spiritual festival) at Cross Maidan. The devotees publicized the pandal very widely, in newspapers and on billboards. In the advertisements, Srila Prabhupada’s disciples were described as American, Canadian, European, African, and Japanese sadhus (saintly devotees). This was unprecedented. Previously, whenever the word sadhu had been applied to someone, it was understood that the person was Indian. There could be no other consideration. But these advertisements were talking about sadhus from all over the world. This was indeed a novelty for every Bombayite, and it especially fascinated me. Intrigued, I went to the Hare Krishna Festival, which was quite well organized. The Hare Krsna sadhus were the biggest attraction for me. I appreciated their singing, dancing, walking, and talking. -
Killing for Krishna
Sulochan dasa (Steven Bryant) (ACBSP) (1952-1986) Memorial Service on the 32nd Anniversary of his death Cheviot Hills Park, Los Angeles (May 22, 2018) Note: The statements and philosophies promoted in the following tributes may not necessarily be those of the organizers of this memorial service, but we believe we must allow devotees to express their sentiments and realizations even if we may disagree with their conclusions. TRIBUTES Henry Doktorski, author of Killing For Krishna. My dear assembled Vaishnavas: Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. My name is Henry Doktorski; I am a former resident of New Vrindaban and a former disciple of Kirtanananda Swami. Some of my friends know me by my initiated name: Hrishikesh dasa. I am the author of a book—Killing For Krishna: The Danger of Deranged Devotion—which recounts the unfortunate events which preceded Sulochan’s murder, the murder itself, and its aftermath and repercussions. Prabhus and Matajis, thank you for attending this memorial service for Sulochan prabhu, the first of many anticipated annual events for the future. Although Sulochan was far from a shining example of a model devotee, and he was unfortunately afflicted with many faults, he should nonetheless, in my opinion, be respected and honored for (1) his love for his spiritual master, and (2) his courageous effort to expose corruption within his spiritual master’s society. His endeavors to (1) expose the so-called ISKCON spiritual masters of his time as pretenders, by writing and distributing his hard-hitting and mostly-accurate book, The Guru Business, and (2) dethrone the zonal acharyas, with violence if necessary, resulted in a murder conspiracy spearheaded by two ISKCON gurus, several ISKCON temple presidents and several ksatriya hit men from ISKCON temples in West Virginia, Ohio and Southern California. -

Deviant Vaisnava Sects
Back to Godhead Magazine Volume 25, Number 03, 1991 Deviant Vaisnava Sects From the time of Lord Caitanya to the present day, His pure followers have defended His teachings against philosophical perversions. By Suhotra Swami Part One: Caste Gosvamis and Smarta-brahmanas From time to time a devotee of Krsna is faced with touchy questions about the shadow side of his religion. "Is it true there are gurus in West Bengal who do dope when they chant Hare Krsna?" Or, "What about that place in West Virginia where they mix Krsna, Christ, New Age, and everything else?" It's best to keep a broad historical perspective when considering this problem. Hybrid versions of Krsna worship, or even downright perversions of it, are nothing new. They all tend to fit a pattern laid down long ago in India by thirteen deviant sects known as apasampradayas. But before looking at the deviants, one should understand the correct culture of Krsna consciousness. Fashionable or not, there is a definite standard of spiritual life. It is called sampradaya. The word sampradaya implies "genuine instruction that has been received through guru parampara, or disciplic succession" ( guru paramparagatu sad upadesasya, from the Amarakosa Sanskrit dictionary). In the fourth chapter of the Bhagavad-gita , Lord Krsna declares Himself to be the original source of genuine spiritual instruction and says that a person is connected to His teachings only through disciplic succession. Genuine spiritual instruction is meant to foster ideal qualities in the human being. Truthfulness, cleanliness, austerity, mercy, humility, and freedom from material desire are called daivi-sampat (transcendental qualities) because they have their origin in Sri Krsna, the transcendental Supreme Person. -
