Raju: The Elephant that Cried

After 50 Years of Being Shackled, Elephant Cries When Rescued 1. In a late night raid that matched the planning and execution of a Seal

Team 6 operation, a London-based charity called Wildlife SOS rescued an 1. elephant named Raju under the cover of darkness in Uttar Pradesh, India. Raju had been in shackles for more than 50 years after being poached as a calf and forced by his owner to beg for handouts from those passing by. The owners would take whatever money was left by tourists but cared little1. for the poor elephant. Raju had been beaten badly, had spikes driven into Raju shackled his ankles, and at times the only thing he had to eat was paper and Styrofoam. Raju also had no shelter. He was used as a prop to beg for money from dusk until dawn, and not only was he malnourished, but his nails were severely overgrown and he had abscesses around his wounds. After living a life of torture and abuse for half-a-century, and after being rescued in the late night operation, Raju cried profusely as he was being unshackled. Tears streamed down his giant face as he realized he was being freed from a life of captivity. The rescue team, which included 10 1. veterinarians and 20 forestry department officers, were horrified to see Tears of relief R aju bleeding at the ankles where spikes were driven, and also astounded to see this majestic animal experiencing such “human” emotions. For this author, the cruelty experienced by this animal at the hands of his human abusers brings into question the definitions of the words “humane” and “animal.” When great acts of kindness occur in life we use that term “humane.” On the contrary, when acts of cruelty rear their ugly heads, we tend to say that the perpetrators act like “animals.” Perhaps, we should reverse these meanings. After all, when was the last time you saw an animal imprison another creature so callously? When was the last time you saw an animal kill or torture out of sheer cruelty, jealousy, selfishness, or any other dark “human” motive? No sir! It’s us humans that engage in this type of behavior. Fortunately, we humans are capable of great acts of compassion as well, as the Wildlife SOS team proved. Raju was taken to an elephant conservation and care center in Mathura where he received emergency medical treatment and a new home. He’s doing well and, reportedly, even has a girlfriend. Well done Wildlife SOS! Perhaps there’s hope for humans after all. Raju treated after being rescued Page.2 Global Gazette Hillside School

The Northern White Rhino: A Path to Extinction

A long time ago on the continent of Africa a giant trench developed. You may know this trench by its name, the Great Rift Valley. As this geographical phenomenon grew, it began to split a population apart. Coupled with the developing thick forest of central Africa, the Great Rift Valley acted as a barrier, which eventually broke one population of White Rhinoceros into two; the Southern White Rhino and the Northern White Rhino.

The Southern White Rhino was critically endangered for a while with its population dropping down to just 30 in the world. However, due to conservation efforts, the population has increased to over 20,000. But, due to illegal poaching of the Rhinos for their horns, they are still listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Unfortunately, the Northern White Rhino has not been as successful. When it was initially isolated, its population size was already much smaller than the Southern White Rhino’s. This, combined with poaching, habitat destruction, and political turmoil in its region, led to the quick dwindling of its population.

Today there are only 6 Northern White Rhinos left on the planet and only one of these is a male. With such small numbers left, their extinction is all but certain. However, there are efforts to protect the species. These efforts include having a majority of them living in Kenya’s Ol Pejata Conservancy where they roam on protected lands. Each Rhino is also accompanied by armed guards and they are under 24-hour surveillance. When there are so few left, we need to do all that we can to preserve the species. With solid effort and a lot of luck, saving them may be possible. To learn about the issues, Google “Ol Pejata Conservancy,” and find out what you can do to help. Foods from Abroad

From Pakistan Nihari is a delicious stew that consists of lamb or beef and served with cooked (brace yourselves) brain or bone marrow. It has been an old and popular delicacy and is regarded as the national dish of Pakistan. It is cooked overnight and garnished with coriander leaves, fried onions, green chilies, strips of ginger, lemons, and sliced white radishes. In addition, garam masala, a blend of powdered spices, is sprinkled over the dish. Traditionally, the cooking time is between 6 to 8 hours as the stew gently simmers and the flavors are allowed to blend. Then, add ginger and garlic and the stew is ready to go. This dish may not be for everyone in the West, but if you’re adventurous, it’s well worth a try. Nihari

From Zambia Nshima with Fish is a Zambian staple. Zambia’s cuisine is based on “nshima,” which is a cooked porridge made from ground maize. It is often served in Zambia with beef, chicken, or

fish. At dinner, nshima has the consistency of mashed potatoes.

Nshima is served in lumps and typically eaten with your hands.

It is served with fried fish, potatoes, and vegetables. Zambians just love this dish and it is a safe bet that our very own Museba Mwape has eaten this tasty treat many times. Nshima with fish

From Iceland Hangikjot is an exceptionally good Icelandic dish of smoked lamb. Traditionally, after the slaughter, farmers smoke the fresh meat and add potatoes, béchamel sauce, red beets, and green peas. Many Icelanders consider this dish to be the most delicious

of the country’s smoked products. Home-smoked hangikjot sometimes needs to be salted during cooking. The meat should be served around melons. Leftovers may be sliced thin and used as a tasty topping for bread. Hangikjot is a Christmas meal that you won’t want to miss should you make it to Iceland. Hangikjot

From Vietnam Bun Rieu is a delicious spicy noodle soup served by street vendors. The broth is the most important component of the dish. It has a base of dried shrimp and tomato which is simmered in fatty pork trotters, aromatic cloves, and lemongrass. It is served with rice, noodles, trotters, basil, a chewy fish-cake-like sausage and fresh sliced lemons. Perhaps when you’re visiting Michael

Oak Island is the alleged site of a secret treasure called the “Money Pit.” Some say that it is the

location of riches beyond the imagination left by Caribbean pirates. For 200 years, treasure hunters have sought the riches believed to be located 102 feet below the surface of Oak Island. Fortune

seekers have been digging at a spot marked by a broken tree branch; however, they have been foiled

by a complex systems of tunnels designed to flood the excavation site and frustrate diggers.

The story of Oak Island goes like this: in 1795, 18 year old Daniel McGinnis, after observing lights coming from the island, noticed a circular depression in the sand in a clearing in the southeastern section of the island. After hearing tales of pirates in the area, he decided to investigate.

Along with two friends, young Daniel began to dig. To the boys’

astonishment, at 10 feet down they ran into oak logs, at 20 and 30 feet down theymen, discovered they returned. more This logs time before they giving made up.it to Eight 90 feet years down later, before as young they found a stone with a mysterious meninscription, yet to be deciphered. After the 90 feet mark, water began to seep into the pit as intricate tunnels had been created as a booby trap deterrent to flood the pit. Coins were found at the 98 foot mark, but then the tunnel began to collapse due to the flooding, and the men narrowly escaped. Many other fortune seekers have tried to dig for the treasure since but to no avail. To this day, nobody has unearthed what many believe to be the motherload of all treasures.

The Green Children of Woolpit The story of the Green Children of Woolpit reads like a fairy tale. During the troubled reign of King Stephen of England (1135-1154), there was a strange occurrence in the village of Woolpit. Two young children, a boy and a girl, emerged from deep ditches designed to trap wolves. They had a green tinge to their skin and they wore clothing of strange colors and unknown origins. They wandered

around bewildered, as if waking from a long sleep, before the villagers took them into their homes. Nobody could understand the language they spoke and the boy and girl refused to eat bread and other foods brought to them. For days they ate nothing until some villagers brought them recently harvested beans, with their stalks still attached. As legend has it, the children1. were said to have survived on this food for months. As time elapsed, the boy became increasingly sick and eventually died. The girl was fine. She learned the English language and married a man at King’s Lynn, and lost her greenish hue. Later, she was questioned about her past and spoke of coming from a place called “the Land of Saint Martin,” where it was perpetual twilight and all of the inhabitants were green in color. The girl recalled that she and her brother were lured to a cavern by a strange sound. They were then captured and woke up in the wolves’ pit. The story is a strange one and perhaps best viewed within the tradition of English folklore. Some claim that this story is a historical account while others say that it is merely fantastical fiction.
