Page.1 Global Gazette Hillside School International Animal Stories Raju: The Elephant that Cried After 50 Years of Being Shackled, Elephant Cries When Rescued 1. In a late night raid that matched the planning and execution of a Seal Team 6 operation, a London-based charity called Wildlife SOS rescued an 1. elephant named Raju under the cover of darkness in Uttar Pradesh, India. Raju had been in shackles for more than 50 years after being poached as a calf and forced by his owner to beg for handouts from those passing by. The owners would take whatever money was left by tourists but cared little1. for the poor elephant. Raju had been beaten badly, had spikes driven into Raju shackled his ankles, and at times the only thing he had to eat was paper and Styrofoam. Raju also had no shelter. He was used as a prop to beg for money from dusk until dawn, and not only was he malnourished, but his nails were severely overgrown and he had abscesses around his wounds. After living a life of torture and abuse for half-a-century, and after being rescued in the late night operation, Raju cried profusely as he was being unshackled. Tears streamed down his giant face as he realized he was being freed from a life of captivity. The rescue team, which included 10 1. veterinarians and 20 forestry department officers, were horrified to see Tears of relief R aju bleeding at the ankles where spikes were driven, and also astounded to see this majestic animal experiencing such “human” emotions. For this author, the cruelty experienced by this animal at the hands of his human abusers brings into question the definitions of the words “humane” and “animal.” When great acts of kindness occur in life we use that term “humane.” On the contrary, when acts of cruelty rear their ugly heads, we tend to say that the perpetrators act like “animals.” Perhaps, we should reverse these meanings. After all, when was the last time you saw an animal imprison another creature so callously? When was the last time you saw an animal kill or torture out of sheer cruelty, jealousy, selfishness, or any other dark “human” motive? No sir! It’s us humans that engage in this type of behavior. Fortunately, we humans are capable of great acts of compassion as well, as the Wildlife SOS team proved. Raju was taken to an elephant conservation and care center in Mathura where he received emergency medical treatment and a new home. He’s doing well and, reportedly, even has a girlfriend. Well done Wildlife SOS! Perhaps there’s hope for humans after all. Raju treated after being rescued Page.2 Global Gazette Hillside School 1. Café Talk November’s 1. Life and Death in Lyari The beaches and boardwalk at Clifton Beach A Further partition in Pakistan's port city of Karachi By FATIMA BHUTTO Published : 1 March 2010 1. KARACHI IS MY CITY, my home, but I was seven years old the first time I set foot on its soil. I was boarded onto a Pakistan International Airlines plane by my father from our exile home in Syria, and told I would be seated next to an old Sindhi woman who would look after me should I need anything. We never said a word to each other, the old Sindhi woman and I. She smiled at me nervously from time to time, and I grimaced back. I was anxious. It was my first time flying alone, my first time going home. Sometime after midnight the crew of PIA stewardesses, clad in deep green shalwar kameez with their pastel flowered dupattas neatly pinned across their shoulders, filed out along the aisles holding a cake and singing Happy Birthday to a Very Important Passenger. Everyone on board clapped and waited patiently for a piece of birthday cake. I didn't sleep a wink that night. My grandmother, Joonam as I called her in her native Farsi, picked me up that bright December morning at Karachi's Jinnah airport. At the time, it looked like a small bus shed. Cement walls, grey and unpainted, dirty tiled floors and creaking baggage belts, badly needing to be oiled. In the city, palm trees that bore coconuts, not the dates our palms carried in Damascus, lined the wide streets.

Political Turmoil in a Megacity: The Role of Karachi for the Stability of Pakistan and South Asia Bettina Robotka Political parties are a major part of representative democracy which is the main political system worldwide today. In a society where direct modes of democracy are not manageable any more – and that is the majority of modern democracies- political parties are a means of uniting and organizing people who share certain ideas about how society should progress. In South Asia where democracy as a political system was introduced from outside during colonial rule only few political ideologies have developed. Instead, we find political parties here are mostly based on ethnicity. The flowing article will analyze the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the role it plays in Karachi. Karachi is the largest city, the main seaport and the economic centre of Pakistan, as well as the capital of the province of Sindh. It is situated in the South of Pakistan on the shore of the Arabian Sea and holds the two main sea ports of Pakistan Port Karachi and Port Bin Qasim. This makes it the commercial hub of and gateway to Pakistan. The city handles 95% of Pakistan’s foreign trade, contributes 30% to Pakistan’s manufacturing sector, and almost 90% of the head offices of the banks, financial institutions and 2 Pakistan Vision Vol. 14 No.2 multinational companies operate from Karachi. The country’s largest stock exchange is Karachi-based, making it the financial and commercial center of the country as well. Karachi contributes 20% of the national GDP, adds 45% of the national value added, retains 40% of the national employment in large-scale manufacturing, holds 50% of bank deposits and contributes 25% of national revenues and 40% of provincial revenues.1 Its population which is estimated between 18 and 21million people makes it a major resource for the educated and uneducated labor market in the country.

Pakistan Perspectives Vol. 23, No.1, January-June 2018 The Socio-Economic Implications of Decline in Artisanal Fishing and its Effect on Women: A Case Study of Shams Pir Island, Karachi Erum Muzaffar* Abstract Artisanal fishing is carried out in the coastal villages of Karachi. Through centuries, these fishing villages have maintained their traditional practices of fishing. Shams Pir Island is in vicinity of Karachi coast. The main occupation of islanders is artisanal fishing which is extremely threatened by various factors. Historically, in coastal communities of Karachi, women were part of fishing and its related activities. With the decline in traditional fishing methods, females have been withdrawn from fishing work. Implications of this process have been drastic for fishing households such as increased poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation etc. The research is conducted to highlight these problems especially from gender perspective. It is exclusively based on females of Shams Pir Island. Female’s socio-economic conditions, family status, perceptions on different contemporary issues pertaining to the endangered livelihood of their family and its relation with environmental changes is investigated in particular. In total, sixty women representing fishing households, few community leaders and representatives of fisher folk’s NGO were interviewed. The results emphasized the livelihood issues of females and their perceptions on environment and climate change. The vulnerabilities of females in fishing communities have been discussed in detail. ______ Introduction Karachi is the largest city of Pakistan with a population of 18 million.1 It is the fastest growing city in the world with population density of 17,325 people per sq.

  • A Hundred Beats Sunday, October 21, 2007 Fatima Bhutto Karachi Is My
What has happened to our city, our home? A hundred beats Sunday, October 21, 2007 Fatima Bhutto Karachi is my city, my home. I was seven years old the first time I set foot on its soil. It had been until then an imaginary homeland, a figment of my dreams and thoughts. It was a home I knew through other's stories, longings, and poetry. On that first trip home, I knew I had fallen in love. Our city, our home, has had many a facelift over the years. Cosmetic surgery courtesy of tawdry billboards and hoardings, sponsored chalking and graffiti, along with posters and pamphlets have often altered the visage of this city. This is not the first time our city, our Karachi, has been pockmarked by obscenity. It is not the last time either, I fear. The face of the city may have changed, but its soul remains untouched. We are not the billboards of this city; they do not represent us the way they would like. They do not resonate deep within, the way a picture of Seaview in the summer does or the way the lush fuchsia colour of our bougainvillea flowers do. The hundred year old Banyan trees that line our older roads, the smell of salt from the sea, the noise of an un-muffled motorcycle that's us. That's a small window into who we are. This invasion, this personal assault on our Karachi, that does not remake us either. Before the siege of the politicians and the onslaught of the barbarians, this city was called Kolachi, named after Mai Kolachi a Sindhi fisherwoman.
