The strata occupy three major structural troughs whose axes trend northeast-southwest, parallel to the trend of the mountains. The most westerly trough is called the Lower Youghio­ gheny, or Friendsville, basin. The middle basin is divided into two parts by a transverse minor anticline, thus forming the Upper Youghiogheny b,asin on the southwest and the Castleman basin on the northeast. The eastern trough is cut into two parts by the Potomac River, which turns Downloaded from http://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/gsabulletin/article-pdf/30/4/567/3414048/BUL30-0567.pdf by guest on 30 September 2021 INTRODUCTION 509 across it at Piedmont, the southern extension of the basin being known as the Upper Potomac basin and the northeastern as the Georges Creek basin. The relations of these basins are shown in the accompanying map. The investigation of the area under consideration presents many diffi­ culties.. Its surface is mountainous and much of it is heavily forested. The rocks have steep dips and are buried at many places under deep overwash. Much of the region is little dissected. Trustworthy drill records were entirely lacking in the chief coal-producing area, the Georges Creek basin, when this investigation was undertaken. EARLIER INVESTIGATION The Coal Measures of Maryland have been studied in greater or less detail by many able and talented geologists in the past, including Tyson, I. C. White, Darton, Taft, Prosser, O’Harra, Clark, Martin. Stose, and various members of the Maryland Geological Suivey. The coal beds have also been examined by mining engineers who have been associated with the various coal companies of the State. The author? feel that conclusions which differ from those obtained by such able workers should be presented with great reserve. He accordingly invited Dr. W. A. Price, Jr., aud Dr. Harvey Bassler to assist him in the work, and feels very fortunate in enjoying their cooperation. Dr. Price has made a critical study of the marine faunas of the Carboniferous of Maryland and adjoining areas and Dr. Bassler is engaged in the monographic study of the Carboniferous flora of the State. A brief synopsis only of th<j results obtained will be given at this place, awaiting fuller presentation in a forthcoming monograph upon the Carboniferous

    MARKET AREA ANALYSIS* Cumberland Overview Cumberland, officially “the City of Cumberland,” is a western gateway city and seat of Allegany County, Maryland, and the primary city of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 20,859 and the metropolitan area had a population of 103,299. Cumberland is a regional business and commercial center for Western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. It is built on the site of the old Fort Cumberland, the starting point for British General Edward Braddock's ill-fated attack on the French stronghold of Fort Duquesne (located on the site of present-day Pittsburgh) during the French and Indian War. Cumberland was also an outpost of Colonel George Washington during the French and Indian War and his first military headquarters was built here. Washington later returned to Cumberland as President in 1794 to review troops that had been assembled to thwart the Whiskey Rebellion. Cumberland was a key road, railroad and canal junction during the 19th century and at one time the second largest city in Maryland (second to the port city of Baltimore — hence its nickname "The Queen City").

Although Baltimore was always home to a significant free black population, the city was centered in a largely slave-holding state. Although Maryland choose neither Union or Confederate sides during the Civil War before President Abraham Lincoln sent federal troops into Baltimore, the city’s port business in the middle of the 19th century focused on the rural exports of tobacco, cotton, grain, and flour; ship building; and the importation of sugar. Politically, economically, and culturally, Maryland was, at the time, a Southern state full of plantations from the Eastern Shore across the state’s central area around Baltimore. The city, however, was more a blend of white Southern and white Northern influences, a marginalized African-American citizenry, a significant group of German immigrants, and more recent Irish arrivals at the start of the Civil War.

    THE ABRAM CREEK-STONY RIVER COAL FIELD, NORTH­ EASTERN WEST VIRGINIA. By GEORGE H. AsuuaY. INTRODUCTION. This paper describes briefly the Abram Creek-Stony Eiver coal field, which lies mainly in Grant, Mineral, and Tucker counties, W. Va. This field is a southward continuation of the Georges Creek and Elk Garden fields of Maryland and West Virginia, in the same basin. The field has a special interest because it contains a large body of low-volatile semibituminous coal at a point nearer tidewater than any other of the Appalachian coals except those of the Georges Creek and Upper Potomac fields. The coal " as received " contains from 13 to 18 per cent of volatile matter, 63 to 73 per cent of fixed carbon, 5 to 16 per cent of ash, and 0.5 to 3.5 per cent of sulphur. It occurs in a number of beds, of which three are widely minable in the area under study. All the beds are more or less broken up with partings of shale, clay, or bone, and the recoverable coal in two of the beds is between 2 and 3 feet and in the third bed between 3 and 6 feet. The third bed commonly occurs in two or more benches sepa­ rated by partings from a quarter of an inch to several inches or locally several feet thick. Several other beds are minable in a few places. Most of the coal beds are equivalent to the beds occurring under the Pittsburgh bed in Pennsylvania; some remnants of the Pittsburgh bed occupy the hilltops north and east of the lower end of Abram Creek.
