Joe Mamuh SS# 6 Chapter 15: The Roman Empire BULLET FORMAT  First emperor (absolute ruler) The Rule of Augustus  Was consul, high priest, senator; never actually crowned emperor  Kept gov’t offices of Republic (e.g. assemblies, senators)  Made soldiers loyal to him and chose gov’t officials based on talent  Chose borders that were defendable (such as rivers); no conquering land  Gov’t changes: paid officials well, long terms for governors, took census (population count) so less taxing  In Rome: firefighters, police, laws on behavior, library  New sense of pride/ patriotism lasted 200 years

INTRODUCTION: Augustus (Octavian) becomes emperor – absolute ruler – in 27 BC THE RULE OF AUGUSTUS  Many roles o Consul, tribune, high priest, senator o Never crowned emperor  Kept basic gov’t structure in place (i.e., assemblies, senators)  Strengthened authority o Soldiers must promise loyalty to HIM o Chose people based on talent (vs. birth)  Established boundaries that were easy to defend (e.g., rivers)  Did not try to gain new territory  Reforms in government o Governors: long terms in office (more experience) and paid well (less corruption) o Census (populations count) – to ensure proper taxing  Changed Rome: o New buildings o Rules for better behavior in public o Fire brigade and police force o Library  Developed patriotism and pride o Citizenship available to people in provinces o Lasted for 200 years (called PAX ROMANA)
