Quarterly Research and Design Project
Throughout the second quarter, you will choose a Graphic Design movement/style (from the provided list) that is visually appealing to you and then research the movement -- learning what events influenced the style, who the leading artists were, how the elements and principles of design are used, etc. Once you have finished your research and essay, you will then design a poster using the style of that specific Graphic Design movement. Your inspiration for the poster content will be a popular children’s book, children’s song, nursery rhyme, Oldie tune, or Old School hit. This packet will walk you through your research assignment and the design process for your final poster drawing. Your finished packet, research essay and digital design will be due Wednesday January 11, 2017.
Part 1: Research and essay (10 points) DUE: WEDNESDAY NOV. 1 Part 2: Brainstorming and sketching (10 points) DUE: WEDNESDAY NOV. 1 Part 3: Finished digital design (20 points) DUE: FRIDAY JAN 12
PART 1: 1 page ESSAY on Graphic Design Styles/Movements in History (10 pts) There are MANY, MANY different movements and styles of Graphic Design. You will choose one of the movements from the following page and write a 1 page essay that includes the following:
- A separate, attached sheet of 10 examples from that movement that you find appealing
- Dates and primary location of the movement
- What was this movement about? What was going on in the world at that time? How did that affect the design? What were these posters designed to do (advertise an event, recruit immigrants, travel USA)?
- Describe the style
o Colors (are they vibrant, muted, many, a few?)
o Font/Typeface (what is it called, how could you describe it with words?)
o Graphics (are they detailed, ornate, simple, geometric, organic, etc)
o Composition (is the design FULL or minimal, Rule of Thirds, balanced, etc.)
- Name and briefly talk about a well-known artist of this movement
- Tell me what attracted you specifically to this style ** You should use 12 point Times New Roman and 1.0-1.5 line spacing. Torbin Kittleson Charlotte Scott
Circus Posters of 1800 and 1900s Art Nouveau 1890-1915ish
Vienna Secession 1897-
Bauhaus Movement, early 1920s
Works Progress Administration Posters, 1935-
Lyrics or Verses as your Design Inspiration You will use lyrics or verses from a popular children’s book, children’s song, nursery rhyme, Oldie tune, or Old School hit to inspire your poster design. Think about books or songs you loved as a child, songs you’ve always thought were hilarious, iconic figures in pop culture, or ridiculous rhymes that would inspire strong imagery. After having done your research essay on a design movement/style, you will design your poster with influences from that movement/style. Below are some minimalist examples…I will expect more complex designs, but these are excellent ideas to start with.
Part 2: Brainstorming and Sketching (10 points)
1. Write out the complete lyrics or verses of your song/poem in the space below. It is important to write it out by hand, so that your brain thinks through each and every word.
2. When you are finished writing the words out, make a list of AT LEAST 10 images that come to your mind when reading over the text. Your image ideas don’t necessarily have to be words in the song – they can just be things that have to do with the story/idea. For example, if you are using the “Rain, Rain, Go Away” nursery rhyme, your images might include: umbrellas, rain clouds, galoshes, a man snoring, a bed with an awesome quilt next to rainy window, a rising morning sun, windows with rain coming down, puddles of water with ripples, rubber duckies (?), windshield wipers (!), etc. 1. 6.
2. 7.
3. 8.
4. 9.
5. 10.
3. Choose 5 of these words to sketch out below (or attach a separate sheet). For example, from the above list, you might only choose to draw the umbrella, galoshes, puddle, duckie and bed with a quilt.
Choose a section of your song/poem and write it below. This will be the text that you will include in your design.
Then use the below templates to create 3 thumbnail sketches for your design. A thumbnail sketch is a rough idea of where you will lay different elements of the design out. Feel free to use the template as portrait or landscape orientation, and to attach more if you have them.

Finally, your final design should utilize the skills you have in Adobe Illustrator. It should include color and fill up an entire 8.5 x 11” piece of paper. Turn into the class folder and a printed copy attached to all of your completed materials in this packet.
