Abstract Novel habitats, rare plants and root traits. by Paula Ann Greer The loss of native plant species through habitat loss has been happening in NZ since the arrival of humans. This is especially true in Canterbury where less than 1% of the lowland plains are believed to be covered in remnant native vegetation. Rural land uses are changing and farm intensification is creating novel habitats, including farm irrigation earth dams. Dam engineers prefer not to have plants growing on dams. Earth dams are consented for 100 years, they could be used to support threatened native plants. Within the farm conversion of the present study dams have created an average of 1.7 hectares of ‘new land’ on their outside slope alone, which is the area of my research. -

A. 3 Author for correspondence ( [email protected] ) Communicating Editor: Javier Francisco-Ortega Abstract— Previous attempts to resolve relationships among the primary lineages of Campanulidae (e.g. Apiales, Asterales, Dipsacales) have mostly been unconvincing, and the placement of a number of smaller groups (e.g. Bruniaceae, Columelliaceae, Escalloniaceae) remains uncertain. Here we build on a recent analysis of an incomplete data set that was assembled from the literature for a set of 50 campanulid taxa. To this data set we first added newly generated DNA sequence data for the same set of genes and taxa. Second, we sequenced three additional cpDNA coding regions (ca. 8,000 bp) for the same set of 50 campanulid taxa. Finally, we assembled the most comprehensive sample of cam- panulid diversity to date, including ca. 17,000 bp of cpDNA for 122 campanulid taxa and five outgroups. Simply filling in missing data in the 50-taxon data set (rendering it 94% complete) resulted in a topology that was similar to earlier studies, but with little additional resolution or confidence. -

A New Species of Colletoecema (Rubiaceae) from Southern Cameroon with a Discussion of Relationships Among Basal Rubioideae

SONKÉ1, S. DESSEIN2, H. TAEDOUMG1, I. GROENINCKX3 & E. ROBBRECHT2 SUMMARY Colletoecema magna, a new species from the Ngovayang Massif (southern Cameroon) is described and illustrated. A comparative morphological study illustrates the similar placentation and fruit anatomy of the novelty and Colletoecema dewevrei, the only other species of the genus. Colletoecema magna essentially differs from C. dewevrei by its sessile flowers and fruits, the corolla tube that is densely hairy above the insertion point of the stamens and the anthers that are included. Further characters that separate the novelty are its larger leaves, more condensed inflorescences, and larger fruits. Its position within Colletoecema is corroborated by atpB-rbcL and rbcL chloroplast sequences. The relationships among the basal lineages of the subfamily Rubioideae, to which Colletoecema belongs, are briefly addressed. Based on our present knowledge, a paleotropical or tropical African origin of the Rubioideae is hypothesized. Key words: Rubioideae, Rubiaceae, Colletoecema, chloroplast DNA, Ngovayang massif. INTRODUCTION Up to now, Colletoecema was known from a single species, i.e. C. dewevrei (De Wild.) E.M.A.Petit, a Guineo-Congolian endemic. The genus was established by Petit (1963) based on ‘Plectronia’ dewevrei (Rubiaceae, Vanguerieae), a species described by De Wildeman (1904). Petit (1963) demonstrated that this species does not belong to the Canthium complex and described a new genus, i.e. Colletoecema. He also showed that the original position in Vanguerieae could not be upheld. -

54 HABITAT CHARACTERISTICS, POPULATION STRUCTURE AND REGENERATION STRATEGY OF THE ENDANGERED SMALL TREE PITTOSPORUM PATULUM ERIK VAN EYNDHOVEN AND DAVID A. NORTON Conservation Research Group, School of Forestry, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch INTRODUCTION Pittosporum patulum is a small, uncommon, enigmatic tree endemic to New Zealand's South Island. Currently, P. patulum is distributed from northwest Nelson and inland Marlborough in the north to the head of Lake Hawea in the south (Townsend 1999). Except in northwest Nelson, all occurrences are to the east of the main divide. However, the distribution is not continuous with major discontinuities between northwest Nelson/Marlborough and north Canterbury, and between north Canterbury and south Canterbury/Otago. Where it is present, P. patulum is commonly found in association with mid-to-high altitude beech forest where it is present either under the canopy, on rocky bluffs, or in nearby scrub. Pittosporum patulum grows to a maximum height of c. 6 m but is most frequently observed as tall slender seedlings or saplings. The foliage of P. patulum is heteroblastic; juvenile leaves are very dark green, coarsely toothed, leathery, linear and often lobed in shape, and 2-5 cm long, while adult leaves are linear-oblong with entire to crenate margins, and 4-7 cm long (Allan 1961; Eagle 1982; Wilson and Galloway 1993; Poole and Adams 1994). P. patulum exhibits strong apical dominance, resulting in long slender seedlings and adults with straight trunks and limited lateral branching. It is likely that in pre-human times P. patulum was naturally uncommon but locally abundant, occurring at scattered sites primarily east of the South Island main ranges. -

THE VEGETATION OF SUBANTARCTIC CAMPBELL ISLAND __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Summary: The vegetation of Campbell Island and its offshore islets was sampled quantitatively at 140 sites. Data from the 134 sites with more than one vascular plant species were subjected to multivariate analysis. Out of a total of 140 indigenous and widespread adventive species known from the island group, 124 vascular species were recorded; 85 non-vascular cryptogams or species aggregates play a major role in the vegetation. Up to 19 factors of the physical environment were recorded or derived for each site. Agglomerative cluster analysis of the vegetation data was used to identify 21 plant communities. These (together with cryptogam associations) include: maritime crusts, turfs, megaherbfields, tussock grasslands, and shrublands; mid-elevation swamps, flushes, bogs, tussock grasslands, shrublands, dwarf forests, and induced meadows; and upland tundra-like tussock grasslands, tall and short turf-herbfields, bogs, flushes, rock-ledge herbfields, and fellfields. Axis 1 of the DCA ordination is largely a soil gradient related to the eutrophying impact of marine spray, sea mammals and birds, and nutrient flushing. Axis 2 is an altitudinal (or thermal) gradient. Axis 3 is related to soil reaction and to different kinds of animal influence on vegetation stature and species richness, and Axis 4 also appears to have fertility and animal associations.
