The Impacts of Possum Herbivory and Possum
The impacts of possum herbivory and possum control on threatened palatable species (Pittosporum patulum, Alepis flavida and Peraxilla tetrapetala) in the Lake Ohau Catchment, South Island, New Zealand A thesis submitted in partial fulfillnent of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science From Department of Entomology and Ecology Lincoln University Nicholas Head 2005 Abstract The impacts of possum herbivory were assessed on 713 individual plants of the nationally endangered Pittosporum patu/um and 115 individual plants of the threatened ('Gradual Decline') mistletoes (A/epis flavida & Peraxilla tetrapeta/a) over three years in the Temple and Huxley river valleys in the Ohau catchment, South Island New Zealand. Statistical models were used to test the influence of several explanatory variables on the probability of survival and growth rates of these rare palatable plants. Increasing defoliation levels were the most significant predictors of mortality for both P. patu/um and mistletoe, and reduced growth rates in P. patu/um. Mortality of P. patu/um increased with plant size although smaller plants were also affected by mortality. P. patu/um mortality was greater for non-forest habitats, and growth rates were greatest on warm aspects. Mistletoe mortality increased with warm aspect, steeper slopes and at lower altitudes. Plant survival and growth increased in the Temple valley following possum control. Although indicative of a positive treatment effect, other factors may have also influenced this result. Possums are the major herbivore responsible for the widespread decline of P. patu/um and beech forest mistletoes throughout New Zealand, although the autecology of P. patu/um predisposes it toward extinction more so than mistletoe. -

Pittosporum kirkii most frequently displays an epiphytic lifestyle, perched amongst nest epiphytes in the canopies of emergent or canopy trees in old-growth forest. The main objective of this research was to enhance the understanding of Pittosporum kirkii, with a focus on ecological, morphological and physiological characteristics. -

Best in sun -- they tend to be leggy in shade -- with average summer water. Grown since the 1800s for its wild variegation -- the leaves large and pale, almost white with occasional green blotches -- and long, salmon-orange, peduncled flowers. A medium grower, to 4-6 ft tall, needing consistent water and nutrients in sun to part shade. Winter mulch increases winter toughness as does some overstory. Frost hardy to 25 F, mid USDA zone 9. Where temperatures drop lower, best in a container or as cuttings to overwinter. Well worth the trouble! $9 Malvaceae Abutilon megapotamicum 'Ines' flowering maple The pale yellow, nearly white flowers of 'Ines' -- flared and backed by a dark red calyx -- are striking and abundant from spring through first frost. This new flowering maple is a fast-growing, medium shrub, to 5 ft tall x 5 ft wide, with slightly fuzzy leaves. -

New Zealand Threat Classification Series is a scientific monograph series presenting publications related to the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). Most will be lists providing NZTCS status of members of a plant or animal group (e.g. algae, birds, spiders), each assessed once every 5 years. After each five-year cycle there will be a report analysing and summarising trends across all groups for that listing cycle. From time to time the manual that defines the categories, criteria and process for the NZTCS will be reviewed. Publications in this series are considered part of the formal international scientific literature. This report is available from the departmental website in pdf form. Guest* Forest Research Institute, New Zealand Forest Service, Rangiora (Received for publication 31 May 1974) ABSTRACT The structure and composition of the forests of the Wairau were determined from information collected at 365 permanently marked plots. The forests were classified into associations using a multi-linkage cluster analysis and Sorensen's "k" index of similarity. The structure and habitat of each of these associations were described, and their condition in relation to the influences of animals was evaluated. Forest condition was found to be poorest in the forests close to timber line, and those to the east of the catchment. INTRODUCTION A survey of the forests of the Wairau catchment (Marlborough) was carried out during the summer of 1972-73 by staff of the Protection Forestry Division of the Forest Research Institute. The purpose was to describe the structure and composition of the forests; to establish a large number of permanent reference points to detect future change; and to determine which forest associations and which areas are in need of further animal control measures. The area studied includes all of the Wairau catchment west of the Blenheim-to- f Mr B. R. Population genetics and autecology of the endemic shrub epiphyte Pittosporum cornifolium A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science at The University of Waikato by Fiona Marie Clarkson _________ 2011 Abstract A comprehensive investigation of the population genetics and autecology of the endemic New Zealand shrub epiphyte Pittosporum cornifolium (Pittosporaceae) is presented. Pittosporum cornifolium has a wide geographic range and is well adapted to a variety of lifestyles namely terrestrial, rupestral, and more commonly, epiphytic. The primary habitats of P. cornifolium are lowland and coastal ecosystems which, in recent times (<200 years) have been subjected to widespread clearance and fragmentation resulting in major reductions to the species potential population range. The study focused on five populations in the North Island from Coromandel to Taranaki where habitat loss of lowland and coastal ecosystems has been significant.
